Carrying the Lycan Cursed child

chapter 14

Ch. 14 / 30 Mar 26, 2026

POV Kali

The moment Zion left, the attack began in earnest. Lady Vivienne's scent shifted to pure predatory satisfaction as she circled me, and I could feel the other women's wolves pressing against mine, testing for weakness.

"How charming that a barren wife thinks she can succeed where we've all failed," Vivienne said, her voice sweet as poisoned honey. "Tell us, dear, what makes you so special? Your fertility? Oh wait..." Her laugh was sharp and cruel.

My wolf cowered under the verbal assault, but I forced myself to stand straight. The mate bond pulsed with distant warmth. Zion was too far away to feel my distress clearly, but the connection reminded me I wasn't completely alone.

Lady Celeste, the blonde with arctic blue eyes, stepped forward next. Her scent carried aggressive confidence. "I hope you can defend yourself better than you could keep your husband interested. The King values strength, and you..." She looked me up and down dismissively. "You don't look like you could win a fight against a pup, let alone a rival."

"Can you even read properly?" Lady Morwyn, a brunette with calculating eyes, joined the circle. "The King values intelligence, education, cultural refinement. What exactly did you study during your sheltered little life as a neglected Luna?"

Each question was designed to highlight my weaknesses. My wolf whimpered as their combined dominance pressed against her. I'd been raised to be a perfect wife, not a warrior or scholar. Dancing, etiquette, basic pack management. Nothing that would impress in a royal court.

"I..." I started, but my voice came out weak and uncertain.

"Exactly," Lady Iris, a redhead with emerald eyes, said with satisfaction. "No combat training, no advanced education, no cultural achievements. What exactly do you offer besides being a convenient political crisis?"

Their scents were thick with triumph as they sensed my growing panic. My wolf was practically flat against my ribs, overwhelmed by their coordinated attack.

But then another scent cut across the hostile atmosphere. Not friendly, but not aggressive either.

"Enough," a voice said firmly. "You've made your point."

Lady Serena stepped forward from where she'd been watching near the windows. She was tall with red hair and intelligent green eyes, and her scent carried the authority of someone who'd held power before. Unlike the others, her wolf wasn't trying to dominate mine.

"The initiation is always brutal," she said, addressing me directly while the others backed off slightly. "They need to test your resolve and see if you'll crumble under pressure."

Vivienne's eyes flashed with irritation. "Serena, this doesn't concern—"

"Doesn't it?" Serena interrupted, her scent shifting to mild challenge. "We're all in this together, whether we like it or not. Destroying each other serves no one."

The tension in the room shifted as some women looked uncomfortable, while others maintained their hostile stances. I could smell the complex mix of emotions. Some guilt, some continued aggression, and underneath it all, fear.

"Come," Serena said to me, "let me show you to your chambers. You'll want to settle in before dinner."

Grateful for the escape, I followed her down a hallway lined with portraits of previous queens. The other women's whispers followed us, but their scents gradually faded.

"Why did you help me?" I asked quietly as we walked.

"Because I remember what it feels like to be dismissed and underestimated," Serena replied, her scent carrying old pain. "I was a Beta in my pack before I came here. I'm used to being undervalued by those who think beauty is the only currency that matters."

We stopped before an ornate door that was clearly more elaborate than the others we'd passed. Even the scent markers around it were different. Zion's scent was strong here, marking this as under his personal protection.

"The King had your chambers upgraded," Serena noted, pushing the door open. "That's... significant. He's never done that for anyone else."

The rooms beyond were luxurious beyond anything I'd experienced. Silk curtains, a private sitting area, and a massive bed covered in midnight blue silk that carried Zion's scent. My wolf immediately relaxed, comforted by our mate's presence even in his absence.

"This will make some of the women very angry," I said, settling into a velvet chair.

"Yes, it will." Serena's scent carried grim understanding. "But it also protects you. Vivienne has destroyed three women she saw as threats over the years. Made their lives so miserable they eventually requested to leave court. But she's never faced someone with the King's protection from day one."

"Destroyed how?" I asked, dreading the answer.

"Social isolation, sabotage, spreading rumors, making their daily lives unbearable with a thousand small cruelties." Serena's wolf stirred with remembered anger. "She's very good at making it look accidental or justified."

A soft knock interrupted us, and another woman entered. She was gentler in appearance, with warm brown hair and kind eyes. Her scent carried none of the aggression I'd experienced earlier.

"Lady Elena," Serena said with genuine warmth. "Come meet our new sister."

"I wanted to apologize for the others," Elena said, her voice soft but sincere. "Not all of us agree with... that approach."

"Elena's from the Eastern territories," Serena explained. "She's been here three years and learned to navigate the politics without joining the worst of it."

"I can teach you what I've learned," Elena offered, settling into another chair. "The formal rules, the unspoken hierarchies, which women to avoid and which you might trust."

"Why would you help me?" I asked, confused by their kindness after the brutal welcome.

"Because none of us have managed to conceive despite years of trying," Serena said bluntly. "There's something about the King's curse that makes normal pregnancy impossible. You arriving and immediately catching his attention threatens everything we've built here, yes. But it also represents hope that someone might finally break what's preventing conception."

"And because," Elena added gently, "some of us still remember that we're not just competitors. We're women trying to survive in an impossible situation."

As the afternoon wore on, they explained the complex web of alliances and rivalries within the harem. How each woman had arrived with hopes and dreams, how years of failure had created bitter divisions, and how Vivienne had seized power more through manipulation than the King's favor.

"The King treats us all politely but distantly," Elena explained. "He's never shown real interest in any of us, just... duty. We all felt it, the difference between obligation and desire."

"That's what makes you so dangerous to them," Serena added. "You have what we've all been pretending to have. His genuine want. His protection. His scent marking you as truly his."

As evening approached and they prepared to leave me to settle in, Serena paused at the door with a final warning.

"Vivienne isn't just protecting her position," she said seriously, her scent carrying deep concern. "She's fighting for survival. After six years here, if she doesn't become queen soon, she'll be too old to compete with new arrivals. She'll do anything to prevent another woman from succeeding where she's failed."

"Anything?" I asked, though I suspected I knew the answer.

"Anything," Elena confirmed grimly. "Be very, very careful, Kali. You may have the King's protection, but you'll be living among women who see you as the end of all their dreams."

As they left me alone in my upgraded chambers, I understood that I'd entered a battlefield far more complex than the formal negotiations with Kastian. Here, the weapons were words, alliances, and social maneuvering, but the stakes were just as high. One wrong move could destroy not just my position, but potentially my life.
