In the heart of werewolf territory, a tense confrontation unfolds as the Alpha issues a warning to Alec, the vampire king. The air is tense as the Alpha urges Alec to retreat, cautioning him against venturing further into their domain.
Alec, however, responds with mocking laughter and confidence. 'You fool. I’m the vampire king. It is you who shall be warned. Join me and eradicate the humans, or die along with them,' he declares, his voice resonating with a dark authority. The Alpha, undeterred, charges at Alec, but the Grimghouls, loyal to their king, swiftly intervene, tearing the werewolf apart before he can reach Alec.
The werewolf pack, witnessing the gruesome display, trembles in fear and retreats, carrying tales of the encounter to neighbouring packs. Over the ensuing days and weeks, Alec and his legion systematically dismantle werewolf packs that attempt to obstruct their path into human lands and villages.
However, the tide turns when a slew of witches finally appear and confront Alec. Despite Alec's impassioned plea, reminding them that his Blood Flame was a witch, the witches remain steadfast in their opposition. 'My blood flame was a witch. You should all be pursuing revenge alongside me!' Alec shouts at them. Undeterred, the witches cast spells that magically ensnare Alec and render him immobile.
Alec, now trapped in magical energy, finds himself unable to resist the combined might of the witches. Together, they open a portal that reveals the Midnight Covenstead on the other side. Alec, still defiant, fights against the magical constraints, but the witches overpower him, forcing him through the portal. The Grimghouls and Shadow Reapers, too, are contained and forced through, joining their king within the Covenstead.
A witch steps forward in the dimly lit corridor of the Covenstead, where there are two odd-shaped doors, her eyes gleaming with arcane power. With a wave of her hand, she begins to cast a complex spell, causing a third door to materialize. The air shivers with magic as the new section of the Covenstead takes form.
With deliberate intent, the witch places a book on the floor of the dark room, which multiplies and forms into stairs and leads to a dark, heavy door. As the witch opens it, another incantation resonates, giving birth to a dungeon that stretches beyond the door's threshold.
The Grimghouls and Shadow Reapers are systematically confined to their designated cells within the newly created dungeon. Each cell becomes a pocket of magical containment, preventing any escape or rebellion from the supernatural entities. Meanwhile, Alec, the vampire king, finds himself trapped in a cell, separated from his loyal legion. The iron-barred door clangs shut, and a witch meticulously draws a line of salt on the threshold. A series of incantations follow, sealing the door with an impenetrable barrier.
Within the confines of his cell, Alec feels the oppressive weight of the magic that binds him. A surge of frustration and rage courses through him as he attempts to break free. With a fierce hiss, he lunges at the iron bars, only to be met with an unexpected retaliation. His outstretched arm passes through the line of salt, triggering an instantaneous burst of flame that engulfs him. Alec recoils, patting the flames down until they extinguish.
A triumphant witch steps forward. 'It is of no use, vampire king. Your cell is bound by magic to keep you within. No matter your strength, you will never leave this cell until the day someone lets you out, but after wiping out most of the werewolf packs and intending to wipe out the human race. We sentence you to remain in this dungeon forever,’ she declares with cold finality and walks away.
‘No, come back. Please don’t leave me here!’ Alec shouts. My chest tightens as I hear the agony and grief in his plea.
The witches converse near the Shadow Reapers and Grimghouls.
‘We have never seen these creatures before. I sense they are not what they seem,’ Emmerson, a witch, says.
Another pulls a mirror from her pocket and holds it in front of a shadow reaper. They gasp as they see the ghost of a human in the reflection.
‘Try one of the grimghouls,’ Emmerson says. The mirror is held in front of a grimghoul to reveal a pixie.
‘The Vampire King has summoned the souls of the dead and pixies from Silverfay Forest and turned them into these monsters,’ Emmerson says to the other witches.
The witches cast spell after spell, attempting to revert them to their original states but failing. They know the Grimghouls and Shadow Reapers are a danger in these forms.
The witches have no choice but to keep them in the dungeon, hoping that a day will come when the pixies will be returned to Silverfay Forest in their natural forms and the souls of the dead returned to their resting places.
As an added precaution, the witches inscribe sigils and lay wards, sealing the heavy black door.
Suddenly, I’m pulled out of the memory and back in real-time, looking into Alec’s solemn eyes. I burst into tears, wrap my arms around him, and cry.
'I'm so sorry, Alec. I’m so sorry you lost your Blood Flame just when you found her. I can't fathom the pain you've endured, the loneliness you've faced for hundreds of years,' I confess, my voice quivering with genuine empathy.
Alec’s words echo my sentiments. 'I'm sorry, too. I've spent countless moments reflecting on my actions, realizing that Juniper wouldn't have wanted vengeance. She was too compassionate, too kind. She would have wished for those responsible to realise that they would see their actions were wrong,' he shares, a hint of regret shading his words.
I shake my head, my fingertips gently tracing the contours of his cheek. 'You shouldn’t be in this dungeon, Alec. It's unjust to treat you like a—'
'Monster?' he interjects, completing my thought. 'Because that's exactly what I became the moment Juniper died, Luna,' he confesses.
'But you're not anymore,' I assert, gazing intently into his eyes.
