As George approaches Juniper again, a flush of fear colours her and Mr. Hillsbury's faces. Rising to her feet, Juniper witnesses George's limp leg miraculously healing. He abruptly stops, staring in disbelief at his restored leg before fixing his gaze on Juniper.
'Impossible, my limp has gone,' George mutters, examining the bottle in his hand. He looks at Juniper accusingly. 'This isn’t medicine. This is a magic potion. You’re a witch!' he exclaims, pointing an accusing finger at her.
Terrified, Juniper turns and runs from the village. George's accusations create a commotion, drawing neighbours out of their houses. Men join George, chasing after Juniper. Scared, she sprints with all her might, knowing they will head straight to her house to search for her. The looming threat of being burned at the stake fills her with dread.
'I'm sorry, Grandma. I can't go home. The people from the valley know. They’re coming for me,' Juniper whispers into the wind. Her words ride a shimmering breeze, swirling around the fog of her breath like a spell, carrying her message to her grandmother.
Juniper, her heart pounding, darts off the trail and plunges into the depths of the woods, skillfully evading the pursuing horde of men. Exhausted and breathless, she collapses to her knees, surrounded by odd and unsettling sounds echoing through the forest. When she looks up, two crimson eyes gleam in the darkness, and a shiver runs down her spine. The eyes, flashing like a fiery, bloody flame, are unmistakably Alec's.
Alec swiftly advances, covering Juniper's mouth with his hand before she can let out a scream. 'My Blood Flame, I've been looking for you for many years,' he whispers to her.
Trembling in his arms, Juniper gasps as he removes his hand from her mouth. Her expression shifts as she touches her tingling mouth from where his hand was, then stares at her wrist, where a warm mark has appeared. 'What is this sensation? What is this?' she asks, pointing to her wrist.
Alec crashes his lips against hers in a flash, igniting sparks and warm tingles that envelop them both. Juniper leans into Alec, deepening the kiss as they share an intimate connection.
When they finally part, Juniper blushes and apologizes, 'I'm very sorry, sir. I'm not sure what got into me. I'd never openly kissed or desired to kiss a man like that before. So, you'll have to forgive me.'
'Juniper and yours, sir?' she asks in return.
'I'm Alec,' he responds. 'No need to apologize, Juniper. We are Blood Flames, destined to be together,' he explains with a warm certainty that captures Juniper's attention.
'Blood Flames?' Juniper asks her curiously.
Alec tenderly caresses her cheek, his touch leaving a magical imprint. 'Yes, blood flames. When we touch, it feels magical, unlike anything you've ever experienced. Once we find each other, we have an irresistible urge to stay close, touch, and love each other. Straying apart causes unbearable burning pain, and if not careful, it leads to death. We have been chosen to be together,' he explains, his words carrying a weight of destiny.
Juniper, intrigued, takes a subtle step closer to him. 'Destined for each other?' she questions, her eyes reflecting curiosity and a newfound awareness.
Alec nods, revealing his fangs with a smile. 'Yes,' he confirms.
Exhaling softly, Juniper takes a step back, processing the information. 'You've got fangs? And your eyes were red as blood, flickering like flames when I first saw you?'
Alec's demeanour shifts; his expression is quiet and serious. 'That's because I'm not human,' he admits.
'Not human?' Juniper pauses, then gasps once again. 'The creatures of the night, the ones who devour the blood from people and leave wounds on their necks?' she realizes.
Alec nods, his smile returning. 'Creatures of the night is one way to describe us, but we prefer the word vampire,' he says, his eyes holding a mixture of mystery and honesty.
'Why are you killing people?' Juniper bravely asks, her voice tinged with fear and curiosity.
Alec takes a moment before responding, his expression contemplative. 'We survive by consuming blood. Human blood is the best source of nourishment for us, yet we primarily drink from animals to limit the number of human fatalities. The people we do feed on are far from lovely. They are individuals who have committed heinous acts like rape, murder, or blackmail,' he reveals.
As the truth sinks in, Juniper confesses, 'I'm not human either. I'm a witch, and the people in the valley are looking for me. That's how I ended up here in the woods. If they discover me, they'll burn me at the stake, Alec,' she sobs.
Alec, with a gentleness surprising for his kind, draws her into his chest, consoling her. 'They can't hurt you if you stay with me, Juniper, my darling,' he assures her.
'I live with my grandmother in a cottage in the village. I need to see her. I need to take her with us,' she pleads with desperation.
Alec considers the situation. 'Would it be too unsafe to return to the cottage now?' he asks, his concern reflecting in his eyes.
Juniper appears uncertain. ‘I’ll go at first light. Then, if there are no guards or men near the cottage, I will sneak in and get her,’ she decides, her voice resolute.
'Can't I collect her for you now while it's still dark?' Alec suggests a protective instinct evident in his demeanour.
'A crowd will already be there, with lit torches and more men. I can't let them hurt you, Alec,' she says, revealing her fear for his safety.
'I'm Alec, the Vampire King, and I'll destroy them all before they blink,' he declares, an aura of power emanating from him as shadows seem to gather around.
‘You’re a King?' Juniper is taken aback.
'Yes, and you will be Queen,' he replies with admiration, his eyes locking onto hers with a promise of a shared destiny.
'You can't kill the valley people, Alec. They are just terrified of witches. Once they realize we are harmless and only want to help them prosper and heal their sicknesses, they will cease hunting and burning us at the stake. Let's wait till the men have searched my grandmother's house for me. Then, when they realize I'm not there, they'll leave, and we'll be able to take my grandmother and escape this place,' Juniper passionately urges him, her eyes pleading for understanding.
Alec contemplates her words, his expression thoughtful. 'Wouldn't it be easier just to kill them?' he suggests, his tone carrying a hint of the pragmatism often associated with his vampiric nature.
'I'm sure it would be, Alec, but we're not monsters,' she replies with conviction.
Despite the danger looming, Alec finds himself smiling at the gentle, loving witch standing before him, her compassionate nature tugging at the dormant humanity within him.
