The Alpha's Mate Who Cried Wolf

Chapter 158

Ch. 158 / 181 Nov 11, 2025

Yiselda opens the door on the right, her commanding tone filled with authority as she utters, 'Materialise.' In response, a mystical book materializes in her grasp. With a graceful gesture, she chants, 'Sprouto Spawniate,' releasing the book to the floor. Before them, the book unfurls into a living staircase, each step growing seamlessly from the previous one. Reaper takes the lead, gliding ahead and stopping by the dark wooden door.

Still cradling me in the protective blanket, Magnus takes a hesitant step back as the enchanted staircase forms. His eyes dart between Yiselda and the surreal manifestation, absorbing the mystical artistry.

As they prepare to descend, Yiselda halts and regards Magnus with a solemn expression. 'I must warn you, Magnus, that Alec is in a worse state. You mustn’t be afraid to hand her over to him. Blood flames will never hurt each other, no matter what state of mind they are in,' she says reassuringly, her eyes piercing through the dimness.

A shadow of uncertainty flits across Magnus's face, questions lingering on his lips. 'What do you mean he’s in a worse state?' he asks, his voice revealing a mixture of concern and suspicion.

Yiselda elucidates the grim reality. 'I have been trying to persuade him to sever the bond or at least reveal the process. But, because he refuses, I've been withholding his daily nourishment of blood. Also, with the added implications of Nina being kept away from him, these deprivations push vampires into a state of erratic wildness,' she reveals, her eyes revealing a hint of regret.

As Yiselda opens the foreboding black door, Magnus follows her lead, stepping into the inky abyss of Pandora's Box's dungeons. The air grows dense with a chill. His gaze flits toward the ominous Grimghouls, their grotesque forms more menacing than his imagination dared to conjure.

'They are more vicious-looking than I ever imagined them to be,' Magnus observes, a shiver coursing through him.

Yiselda issues a cautionary note. 'Don’t get too close to them. If not your whole arm, they will rip your hand off, given the opportunity,' she warns, emphasizing the treacherous nature of their surroundings.

Agonizing moans resonate through the dimly lit dungeon as they draw closer to the Shadow Reapers, each moan echoing a torment that transcends the physical realm. The air seems to ripple with an arcane heaviness, signalling the presence of supernatural forces at play. A subtle hush falls over the corridor, and the flickering fire torchlights cast eerie shadows on the cold stone walls.

As the source of the haunting sounds comes into view, the cries become more distinct, intertwining with the essence of pain. Caught in the clutches of a spell-sealed enclosure, the Shadow Reapers writhe in a dance of suffering, their faces etched with agony.

The mere mention of Alec's name is a whispered plea that escapes my lips. 'Alec,' I murmur weakly under my breath. A fragile sound that echoes in the cavernous space. Magnus stiffens, and a sombre expression develops on his face.

Approaching the dungeon cell where Alec is confined, the air thickens with an electric intensity. Alec snarls and hisses, his demeanour a feral defiance that lies beneath. Standing at the threshold of the cell, Magnus is confronted with the sight of Alec in a state of unparalleled wildness.

Magnus takes in the sight of Alec in his wild and monstrous state. Disgust and loathing simmer in Magnus's voice as he addresses Yiselda with clear disdain in his words. 'This is supposed to be the vampire king? Yiselda, I’m not handing Nina over to that monster,' he declares, the weight of his protective instincts echoing through his tone.

Alec, in response, pauses in his hissing defiance, locking eyes with Magnus. The air thickens with tension as both beings engage in a silent snarl-off. Feral instincts are on display as Alec reveals his fangs, and Magnus, not to be outdone, expands his wolf canines, growling in a visceral response to the vampire before him.

Yiselda, acting as the voice of reason in this heated showdown, admonishes both Alec and Magnus. 'Now is not the time for a snarl off,' she declares, attempting to diffuse the escalating hostility.

Momentarily diverting from the confrontation, Alec drops his gaze on my weakened form in Magnus's arms. The hiss fades, and a softening of expression replaces the ferocity as Alec extends a tentative hand towards me. However, Magnus, driven by a protective instinct that transcends species, steps back, pulling me closer to his chest.

As I’m caught in the crossfire of the supernatural struggle, I gasp in pain as the reality of our dire situation unfolds. The searing sensation on my skin intensifies, and visible blisters form on my arms. Through tear-filled eyes, I observe Alec's own affliction—his skin is red and blistered. The pain becomes unbearable suffering.

'It's going to be okay, Nina,' Magnus reassures me with a promise, preparing to remove the blanket he's using to hold me.

'Alec, you must stand aside so we can place her in the cell with you,' Yiselda commands him.

In response to Yiselda's command, Alec, with a heartbreaking longing in his gaze, willingly steps aside, retreating into the shadows of the cell.

Yiselda then directs Magnus's attention to a faint line of salt at the cell's entrance. ‘There’s a spell in place at the entrance of his cell. Do you see the faint line of salt there?’ Yiselda asks him and points.

Magnus nods.

'Do not break the line. Place Nina over it and then step back immediately,' she instructs Magnus.

Yiselda, with a deep breath, unlocks the door to the cell, the rusty hinges creaking in protest as the heavy portal swings open. Caught in the tumult of conflicting emotions, Magnus hesitates at the threshold. I feel his hands tremble beneath me, a physical manifestation of the internal struggle as he is poised to surrender me to the one person he vehemently opposes—the Vampire King, Alec, my other fated mate.

With relentless determination, Magnus peels away the protective blanket, the pain from the blistering heat searing his flesh momentarily ignored. Gently, he lays me on the other side of the salt line. A single tear escapes his eye, falling onto my cheek, revealing the depth of his love and the sacrifice he's about to make. In this moment of painful surrender, his hands still tremble as he performs a selfless act born out of love and necessity.

I reach up, my fingertips brushing his cheek, creating a tender connection between us. 'I love you, Magnus,' I sob. Overcome with emotion, Magnus responds with a tearful affirmation, 'I love you too, Nina,' as he reluctantly steps back from the confines of the dungeon cell.
