As Alec and I initiate our tactical withdrawal, deftly giving the impression of a retreating force, the pursuing humans believe they've achieved a semblance of victory. The cityscape echoes with the triumphant cheers of the soldiers, and we lead them out of the urban chaos.
We finally arrived and have successfully lured them onto the Wolf Council's territory. Alpha Bennet, seething with rage, emerges from his residence, the fury on his face unmistakable. 'Why did you bring the humans here?' His voice rages with anger.
Alec, undeterred, responds with a taunting smile, 'You want the humans wiped out? Carry it out yourself!' he retorts. As if on cue, the ominous hum of approaching jets intensifies, and the loud cracks of gunfire fill the air as bullets are unleashed in our direction. Alec and I narrowly evade the lethal projectiles. The near misses heighten the tension.
The Shadow Reapers, impervious to the physical realm, navigate through the hail of bullets unscathed. Their dark, ethereal forms make the projectiles pass through them harmlessly. Meanwhile, the ranks of the Wolf Council respond with a surge of hundreds of werewolves, shifting into their wolf forms to attack the soldiers.
In another strategic move, Alec intervenes, manipulating the minds of the soldiers with the influence of the Shadow Reapers. The soldiers no longer see the grimghouls, vampires, or the rest of us as the enemy but solely the wolves under Alpha Bennet's command.
Alpha Bennet urgently calls for Kadva, instructing him to bolster the defences of their premises. The battleground becomes a chaotic amalgamation of supernatural forces and military might.
As fireballs streak through the sky, aimed at the menacing jets, the explosive impact sends shockwaves booming through the ground. The earth rumbles violently, causing disarray among the soldiers who struggle to maintain their footing. Those unfortunate enough to be caught in the seismic disturbance are sent airborne, tumbling through the air.
Alec wields his formidable abilities. The Grimghouls, responding to his command, surge towards the epicenter of the conflict, where Alpha Bennet and Alpha Theaton valiantly engage the soldiers. The shrieks and snarls of the supernatural beings mingle with the battle sounds.
Amidst the turmoil, Alec turns to me with a sense of urgency. 'Magnus, this is the time to find Nina while they are distracted.'
I nod in agreement, and we hastily maneuver around the rear of the building, seeking the advantage of surprise. The back entrance offers a covert entry point, and we slip inside undetected, navigating through the shadows.
'We need to find her quickly,' I murmur. 'I can smell her scent. She must be down here.'
Alec descends the stairwell with supernatural speed, a blur of motion that transcends the capabilities of mere mortals. Alpha Theaton's final gasps echo through the cold stone corridors as Alec seizes him, pinning him against the damp walls. Alec, with predatory grace, sinks his fangs into Alpha Theaton's neck, savouring the life force that courses through the veins.
Amidst the dimness, my gaze sweeps across the cramped cells, and a surge of relief floods over me as I spot Nina lying unconscious in a nearby enclosure.
‘Nina!’ I exclaim, urgency lacing my voice. In a hasty maneuver, I fumble to retrieve the key from Alpha Theaton’s belt while Alec continues his blood-draining ritual.
With a swift motion, I rush to the cell door, fumbling with the key to unlock it. The metallic click echoes in the confined space, and I quickly kneel by Nina's side, a surge of relief coursing through me.
‘Wake up, Nina. I’m here. You’re safe now,’ I murmur, cradling Nina in my lap as she gradually stirs.
In an instant, Alec materializes next to me. As Nina's eyes flutter open, Alec's fingers gently sweep strands of hair away from her face.
'Alec? Magnus?' Nina utters, her gaze darting between us. Taking our hands in hers, she cradles them to her face and feels an overwhelming sense of warm sparks that resonate through our shared bond.
Wearing a warm smile, Alec affirms, ‘We’re here.’
Overcome with emotion, Nina sits up, flinging her arms around me. A passionate kiss seals the reunion, and then she turns to Alec, lunging forward to wrap her arms around his neck.
'Outside sounds like a warzone. How did you get out of the dungeon? Oh! The humans! Please tell me you didn't?' Nina's voice carries sincere concern.
‘No, Alec hasn’t harmed the humans,’ I assure her. ‘Alec’s idea was to make ourselves known in the city, destroy a few buildings and cars, and lure the army to Alpha Bennet. They would have no choice but to fight against the humans, distracting them from you. We used the opportunity to come down here and rescue you. I’m sorry, Nina. I should have listened to you earlier and let Alec out of the dungeon when you asked,’ I explain apologetically.
‘You let Alec out?’ Nina says, surprised.
‘Much to Yiselda’s dismay,’ I offer a small smile.
'Thank you,' Nina murmurs, turning to Alec.
He pulls her into his chest, and their kiss is filled with passion and relief.
As they part from the kiss, Alec smiles. ‘I have something for you,’ he says, placing Nina’s wand in her hand.
‘How did you get this? Alpha Theaton took it from Kadva,’ she says.
‘Kadva?’ Alec and I ask.
‘He is the mage you saw earlier conjuring fire. He is being forced to do Alpha Bennet’s bidding. I’m sure of it,’ Nina asserts. 'We need to put an end to the Wolf Council, stop Kadva, and then convince the humans that we wish them no harm and explain ourselves in hopes they will let us live peacefully back in our domains,’ she states.
'I'm not sure how well that will work, given that we did attack and destroy their city,' Alec interjects.
‘We have to at least try,’ Nina insists as she makes her way to the stairwell and gasps upon seeing Alpha Theaton's dead body with visible neck punctures.
‘Don’t look,’ Alec says, gently taking Nina’s hand and leading her up the stairs.
We exit the building to see many dead wolves from the Wolf Council’s pack.
'I'll apprehend Kadva, and you two concentrate on defeating Alpha Bennet and Alpha Amir,' Nina says.
I shift into my wolf, and with a burst of speed, I sprint toward Alpha Bennet, who is also in wolf form. I lunge and knock him on his side, biting his leg. Alpha Bennet retaliates, leaping to his feet and viciously biting into my back, tearing a chunk of skin from my body. Ignoring the pain, I manage to flip Alpha Bennet over and rip his stomach open with my claws.
