POV Luella
I woke up in my chambers with heavy chains around my wrists and ankles. The door was locked from the outside, and I could smell at least six guards stationed in the hallway.
He's locked me up like a prisoner in my own room.
The forced separation from Kyrell caused physical agony that grew stronger with each passing hour. My wolf howled constantly, desperate for her mate. Every cell in my body screamed for him, the incomplete bond feeling like a wound that wouldn't heal.
It hurts. It actually hurts to be away from him.
Tobias visited me regularly to observe my suffering with cold, scientific detachment. He carried a leather journal and took detailed notes about my condition, watching me writhe in pain like I was some fascinating experiment.
He's studying me. Taking notes on how much agony I can endure.
"Interesting," he murmured during his third visit, scribbling something in his journal. "The physical symptoms are more severe than I expected. Your temperature has risen by two degrees, and your pulse is dangerously elevated."
He's documenting my torture like a scholar.
"Please," I gasped, sweat pouring down my face. "Just let me see him. For a few minutes."
"I'm afraid that's impossible," Tobias replied without looking up from his notes. "I need to understand how mate bonds function. How much separation can they withstand before causing permanent damage? You're providing invaluable data."
Permanent damage? He might kill me with this separation.
"You're a monster," I whispered.
"I'm a scientist," he corrected. "And you're my most important subject."
This is what he really is. Not a loving prince, but a calculating monster who sees me as an object to study.
The agony grew worse with each hour. My wolf was dying inside me, starved of her mate's presence. I could barely eat, could barely sleep, could barely think beyond the desperate need to find Kyrell.
I'm going to die if this continues. My body can't handle this separation.
On the third night, when I was certain I couldn't survive another hour, shadows began moving strangely in the corner of my room.
What is that? The shadows are... shifting.
Kyrell materialized from the darkness itself, his shadow magic allowing him to bypass the locked doors and magical barriers Tobias had erected.
He came for me. He found a way.
"Luella," he breathed, and just hearing his voice eased some of the agony tearing me apart.
My mate. He's here. I can breathe again.
The moment his skin touched mine, an explosion of sensation burned away years of psychological armor from both of us. The incomplete bond snapped into place with such force that I cried out, my body finally whole for the first time in my life.
This is what I was missing. This completion, this rightness.
For the first time since I'd known him, I saw Kyrell completely vulnerable and unguarded. His usual cruelty was gone, replaced by desperate tenderness as he gathered me in his arms.
This is the real him. Under all that cruelty, this is who he really is.
"I'm sorry," he whispered against my hair, his voice breaking. "I'm so sorry I took so long to claim you. I'm sorry I fought this for so long."
He's apologizing. Kyrell is actually apologizing.
His black eyes were bright with unshed tears as he cupped my face in his hands. "I was afraid. Afraid that if I let myself love you, he would use it to destroy us both."
Love. He said love.
"I love you too," I whispered, and the words felt like coming home.
This is what real love feels like. Not artificial warmth, but burning, consuming need.
The bond between us settled into place like a missing piece of my soul clicking home. My wolf purred with deep satisfaction, finally united with her true mate.
We're complete now. For the first time in my life, I'm complete.
Kyrell's hands were gentle as they traced my face, mapping every curve and angle like he was memorizing me.
"My mate," he said softly. "My true mate."
His. I'm finally his, and he's mine.
But our perfect moment of recognition and healing was violently shattered when the door exploded inward. Guards poured into the room on Tobias's orders, their weapons drawn.
No. Not now. Not when we finally found each other.
"Take him," Tobias commanded from the doorway, his perfect mask completely gone. His face was twisted with rage and possessive fury.
He can't stand that I belong to someone else.
As the guards grabbed Kyrell and began dragging him away from me, I felt our newly formed bond being physically torn apart. The agony was so complete, so devastating, that screams tore from both our throats.
They're ripping my soul in half. This pain is killing me.
"No!" I screamed, reaching for him desperately. "Don't take him from me!"
I can't survive this separation again. The bond is too strong now.
Kyrell fought against the guards with savage desperation, his shadow magic lashing out wildly as they pulled him further from me.
"Luella!" he roared, his voice filled with such anguish that it echoed through the entire castle.
He's in as much pain as I am. The bond is torturing him too.
The physical agony of our separation was beyond anything I'd ever experienced. It felt like someone was slowly peeling my skin off while setting my bones on fire. My wolf was screaming inside me, desperate to reach her mate.
This will kill us both. You can't tear apart a true mate bond without destroying both people.
"Fascinating," Tobias murmured, making notes in his journal even as Kyrell and I screamed in agony. "The physical reaction to forced separation is even more severe than the initial bonding response."
He's still taking notes. Even now, he's studying our torture.
As the guards dragged Kyrell through the doorway, our bond stretched to its breaking point. I could feel it fraying, threatening to snap completely.
If they take him too far, the bond will break permanently. We'll both die.
"Please," I sobbed, reaching toward my mate as he disappeared from view. "Please don't do this."
But Tobias just smiled that cold, calculating smile and followed the guards out, locking the door behind him.
He's going to kill us both through forced separation. And he's going to document every second of our deaths.
Alone in my chamber, I collapsed to the floor as waves of agony crashed over me. The bond was screaming for completion, for my mate's presence, for the connection that had been so brutally severed.
I can't survive this. No one could survive this level of pain.
Somewhere in the castle, I could hear Kyrell's anguished howls echoing through the stone corridors.
He's suffering too. My mate is dying, and there's nothing I can do to save him.
