My Cruel Alpha

chapter 14

Ch. 14 / 30 May 06, 2026

POV Luella

The days following my confrontation with Kyrell were filled with an intensity from Tobias that took my breath away. He cancelled important political meetings to spend entire days focused solely on me, bringing gifts that showed how well he knew my desires.

Rare books about military strategy. Imported silks in my favorite deep blue. Jewelry that catches the light perfectly.

"You spoil me," I said as he fastened a sapphire necklace around my throat, his lips following the path of the chain.

"You deserve to be spoiled," he murmured against my skin. "You're going to be queen. You should have everything beautiful."

The artificial bond hums with contentment. This is what happiness feels like.

Our physical relationship intensified as well. Tobias claimed my body with increasing passion, our intimate moments becoming more frequent and satisfying. The artificial bond made every touch feel electric and right.

"I love you," he whispered during our lovemaking, his brown eyes intense with emotion. "You're the most precious thing in my world."

His devotion makes me feel safe. Protected. Valued.

When nightmares troubled my sleep—dreams of black eyes and cruel smiles—Tobias soothed me with gentle hands and passionate kisses that chased away all darkness.

He can comfort me both emotionally and physically. This is what true partnership feels like.

The romantic bliss made me feel confident and radiant. I walked through the castle with my head high, secure in Tobias's love and my place at his side.

I'm happy. Truly happy. Kyrell's cruel words can't touch me when I have this.

That confidence lasted until the court session where military strategy was being debated.

I know about this topic. Father taught me well. I can contribute something meaningful.

"Perhaps," I said during a discussion about border defenses, "we should consider rotating the guard positions more frequently. Familiarity can lead to complacency."

Several lords nodded approvingly. I felt a surge of pride at making a valuable contribution.

Then Kyrell spoke.

"How fascinating," he said, his voice cutting through the chamber like a blade. "The future queen graces us with tactical wisdom gleaned from what impressive source? Romance novels?"

Here it comes. He's going to try to humiliate me.

Heat flooded my cheeks, but I lifted my chin. "From my father's training, actually. Alpha Thadeus believes—"

"Oh yes, Alpha Thadeus," Kyrell interrupted, his smile razor-sharp. "Whose territory hasn't seen real conflict in decades. Tell me, what other profound insights did daddy share during your little lessons?"

He's making me sound like a child. Like I'm playing at being important.

Murmurs rippled through the chamber. I could smell the shift in the room's atmosphere—embarrassment, secondhand shame, pity.

"My experience may be limited," I said carefully, "but fresh perspectives can sometimes—"

"Fresh perspectives," Kyrell repeated with mock delight. "Is that what we're calling ignorance now? How refreshing."

He's enjoying this. He's savoring my discomfort.

His black eyes glittered with cruel amusement as he continued his attack. "Perhaps the future queen should stick to activities better suited to her limited capabilities—like warming my brother's bed, since that's clearly her only real talent."

He didn't just say that. Not in front of everyone.

The silence in the chamber was deafening. I could feel every eye on me, could smell the mixture of shock, embarrassment, and dark amusement from the assembled lords.

He reduced me to nothing more than a bedwarmer. In front of the entire court.

"That's enough," Tobias said sharply, but the damage was done.

I forced myself to remain seated, to keep my expression neutral, but inside I was burning with humiliation. My wolf wanted to tear Kyrell's throat out.

I won't give him the satisfaction of seeing me break.

The session ended shortly after, but I could hear the whispers following me as I left the chamber. Kyrell's words had accomplished exactly what he intended—making me look naive, incompetent, and useful for only one thing.

He humiliated me completely. And he enjoyed every second of it.

I was heading to my chambers when he appeared in an empty corridor, blocking my path.

"Leaving so soon?" he asked with that same cruel smile. "I thought you might want to discuss your impressive debut as a military strategist."

I won't let him see how much he hurt me.

"What do you want, Kyrell?" I asked, my voice steady despite the rage boiling inside me.

"Just admiring my handiwork," he replied. "You looked so confident walking into that chamber. It was almost sad to watch reality destroy your delusions."

He's trying to break me down further. To finish what he started.

"You're pathetic," I said, my control finally snapping. "A bitter, cruel creature who gets pleasure from hurting others because your own life is so empty and meaningless."

"Empty?" Kyrell laughed. "At least I'm not deluding myself about my worth. You think because my brother fucks you that makes you important? You're nothing but a political liability who will bring down this kingdom through sheer incompetence."

His words hit like physical blows, each one designed to wound.

"You're wrong," I shot back. "I'm going to be queen. I'm going to help rule this kingdom."

"You're going to be a disaster," he snarled. "A weak, worthless ornament who will crumble the moment real pressure is applied. Today proved that."

He's trying to destroy my confidence, my sense of self-worth.

"At least I'm not alone," I said, aiming for his biggest weakness. "At least I'm not some twisted, isolated creature who pushes away everyone who might care. You're going to die alone, Kyrell, because no one could ever love something so fundamentally rotten."

Now I see the pain flash across his face. Good.

"Better alone than desperately clinging to someone who sees you as property," he replied, his voice dropping to that dangerous whisper. "At least I'm honest about what I am. You're still pretending to be something other than a pretty political pawn."

We're destroying each other with words. Both of us bleeding from these wounds we're inflicting.

"You make me sick," I said, meaning every word. "Everything about you is poison."

"The feeling is entirely mutual," he replied. "You disgust me."

We hate each other so completely it feels like poison in my veins.

He turned and walked away, leaving me shaking with rage and pain. My wolf paced restlessly, confused by the intensity of emotions coursing through me.

Why does someone I despise so completely have the power to wound me more deeply than anyone else?

I had Tobias's perfect love waiting for me. His devoted worship, his passionate tenderness. He would heal these wounds with gentle hands and loving words.

So why do Kyrell's cruel observations cut so much deeper than Tobias's kindness can reach?
