My Cruel Alpha

chapter 18

Ch. 18 / 30 May 06, 2026

POV Luella

"I'm sorry," Tobias said the moment I returned to my chambers. His brown eyes were filled with regret, his scent heavy with remorse. "I was completely wrong earlier. You were just trying to communicate with me, and I reacted badly."

He's apologizing. That's something, at least.

"I understand now," he continued, taking my hands gently. "I was overwhelming you with gifts instead of listening to what you actually wanted. I promise I'll do as you ask. I'll stop pressuring you so much."

His touch is warm and safe. The artificial bond hums with approval.

"Thank you," I said, meaning it. "I just want us to understand each other."

"We do," he said, pressing a soft kiss to my forehead. "And I'll prove it to you."

Maybe we can work through this. Maybe things can get better.

But the next evening, when Tobias surprised me with yet another elaborate romantic gesture—candlelit dinner in his private chambers, musicians playing softly in the corner, rose petals scattered everywhere—I felt suffocated by the sheer perfection of it all.

He said he understood. But this is just more of the same overwhelming romance.

"Do you like it?" he asked eagerly, his face bright with anticipation.

He's trying so hard. I should be grateful. Why do I feel trapped?

"It's beautiful," I managed, forcing a smile.

But as the evening wore on, with Tobias's constant attention and need for my appreciation, I felt the walls closing in around me. Every gesture was perfect, every word carefully chosen, every moment orchestrated to show his devotion.

This is what I should want. So why does it feel like I'm suffocating?

"I need some air," I said suddenly, standing from the table.

"Of course," Tobias said immediately. "Shall I come with you?"

Always offering to come with me. Never giving me space to breathe.

"No, I just need a few minutes alone," I said, feeling guilty for the hurt that flashed across his face.

I fled to the castle gardens, seeking the darkness and solitude I desperately needed. Once I was sure I was alone, I finally allowed myself to break down.

What's wrong with me? I have everything I should want, and I feel empty.

The tears came in great, heaving sobs that I couldn't control. All the confusion and emotional exhaustion of being torn between duty and inexplicable desire finally overwhelmed me.

I'm supposed to love Tobias. He's perfect. He's everything I should want in a mate.

But I didn't love him. Not really. The artificial bond created warmth and contentment, but not the consuming passion I'd felt pressed against that oak tree with Kyrell.

I'm a terrible person. I'm engaged to a wonderful man and I want someone else.

I don't know how long I sat there crying, but eventually I sensed someone approaching. I expected it to be Tobias, coming to comfort me with gentle words and perfect understanding.

Instead, Kyrell emerged from the shadows and sat silently beside me on the stone bench.

He's not saying anything. Not mocking me or being cruel.

For hours, we sat together under the stars in complete silence. His presence was oddly comforting, his usual harsh energy muted into something almost gentle.

Why isn't he attacking me when I'm vulnerable? This is the perfect opportunity for cruelty.

When I finally found the courage to speak, my voice was hoarse from crying. "Why are you being kind to me for once?"

Kyrell was quiet for a long moment before responding. "Because watching someone else break your spirit would deprive me of a worthy opponent."

Even his kindness is possessive. He wants to be the only one who can affect me.

There was something in his voice that revealed both respect for my strength and a possessive need to be the only one who could reach me so deeply.

He sees me as strong. Not fragile or delicate, but strong.

But then he immediately ruined the tender moment. "Besides, your tears make you look weak and pathetic."

There's the cruel Kyrell I know.

Yet even as he said the harsh words, his hands remained gentle as he reached over to wipe the tears from my cheeks. The contradiction confused me more than anything else he'd ever done.

His words are cruel but his touch is tender. Which is the real him?

"You're impossible," I whispered.

"I know," he replied, his thumb still brushing across my cheekbone.

His scent is different tonight. Softer somehow. Less dangerous.

The moment stretched between us, fragile and confusing. For once, Kyrell wasn't trying to hurt me or push me away. He was just... there.

This is more intimate than anything I've shared with Tobias.

But our fragile truce was shattered when Tobias's voice cut through the night air.

"What the hell is this?"

Oh no. This looks bad. This looks really bad.

I jumped away from Kyrell, but the damage was done. Tobias stood at the garden entrance, his face twisted with rage at finding his fiancée alone with his brother in such an intimate moment.

His scent is pure fury. His wolf is close to the surface.

"Tobias, it's not what it looks like," I said, standing quickly.

"Isn't it?" Tobias snarled, stalking toward us. "I find you crying in the dark with him, letting him touch you like that?"

He looks ready to kill. Both of them do.

Kyrell stood slowly, his usual cruel smile returning. "Hello, brother. Lovely evening, isn't it?"

"You bastard," Tobias growled. "You couldn't leave her alone, could you?"

They're going to fight. Over me.

"Leave her alone?" Kyrell laughed. "She came to me, remember? Running from your suffocating devotion."

That was the final straw. Tobias launched himself at his brother with a roar of rage, his claws extending as his wolf surged to the surface.

They're actually fighting. Physically fighting.

The brothers crashed together with violent force, both of them partially shifting as they tore at each other with claws and teeth. Blood flew as they grappled and struck, their hatred for each other finally exploding into open warfare.

This is my fault. I caused this.

I should have been horrified by the violence. Should have been screaming for them to stop, for the guards to intervene.

But I'm not horrified. Part of me is... excited.

Instead, I found myself frozen in place, watching with fascination as both brothers bled for the right to claim me. My wolf purred with dark satisfaction at seeing two powerful males fighting over her.

What's wrong with me? I should stop this, not enjoy it.

But I couldn't deny the traitorous response of my body to seeing them fight with such desperate fury. The artificial bond with Tobias should have made me support him completely, yet I found myself equally drawn to both combatants.

They're both bleeding. Both fighting like their lives depend on it.

The fight was brutal and evenly matched, years of sibling rivalry and resentment pouring out in violent release.

This is what I've done to them. I've turned brothers against each other.
