POV Luella
The guards surrounded us, but Tobias held up his hand to stop them from attacking. His brown eyes glittered with the satisfaction of someone who believed he'd already won.
He has something else planned. Something worse than just capturing us.
"Wait," Tobias said, his voice carrying that familiar smooth tone. "I have a better offer for our dear Lady Luella."
Here it comes. Another impossible choice.
Through our mate bond, I felt Kyrell's weakness growing stronger. The poison was working faster now, probably triggered by the stress and exertion of our escape.
I can feel his pain. His body is starting to shut down.
"You want the antidote for my brother?" Tobias asked, pulling a small vial from his robes. "I'm prepared to give it to you."
There's always a catch with him. Always a price.
"What do you want?" I asked, though I dreaded the answer.
"Simple," Tobias replied with that cold smile. "You watch him die first."
What?
"I'll give you the antidote," he continued, "after you watch me execute him publicly. I want you to see the light fade from his eyes, to feel your mate bond break, to understand exactly what defying me costs."
He thinks watching Kyrell die will break me completely.
Through our connection, I felt my mate's horror and desperate love. He was begging me silently not to agree, not to sacrifice myself for him.
Don't do it, his voice whispered through the bond. Don't let him win.
"You're insane," I said, but Tobias just laughed.
"Am I? Or am I simply practical?" He gestured to the vial. "This antidote will save his life, but only if administered within the next few hours. After that, the poison will cause him excruciating pain before death."
He's describing torture. Deliberate, calculated torture.
"The choice is yours, my dear," Tobias said with mock gentleness. "Watch him die quickly and cleanly, then serve me as a broken, obedient queen. Or watch him suffer for days while you cling to your useless pride."
This is psychological torture. He wants to destroy my spirit completely.
Through our bond, Kyrell's voice was desperate: Don't listen to him. Don't let him break you.
But I could feel his pain getting worse with each passing minute. The poison was designed to be cruel, to cause maximum suffering before death.
If I don't agree, he'll die in agony. If I do agree, Tobias gets everything he wants.
"I need a moment to think," I said, buying time while my mind raced for options.
"Of course," Tobias said magnanimously. "But don't take too long. Every minute you delay is another minute of unnecessary pain for him."
There has to be another way. There has to be.
That's when I remembered something from our escape through the forest. The way our bond had allowed perfect coordination even in the chaos of battle.
We fought as one unit. We can plan as one mind.
Through our connection, I sent Kyrell a single thought: Trust me.
His response was immediate: Always.
I have an idea. But we need to be in the great hall with witnesses.
Aloud, I said, "Fine. I'll do it. I'll watch you execute him."
The lie tastes like poison in my mouth.
Tobias's smile was triumphant. "Excellent choice. Guards, bring them to the great hall. It's time for a public demonstration of justice."
He thinks he's won. He has no idea what's coming.
As the guards marched us through the corridors, I used our mate bond to share my plan with Kyrell. His black eyes widened with understanding, then burned with fierce approval.
It's dangerous. But it's our only chance.
I know, he replied silently. But if anyone can pull this off, it's us.
The great hall was packed with nobles, all gathered to witness what they believed would be the execution of traitors. Their scents told the story—fear, excitement, bloodlust, confusion.
Some of them want to see us die. Others are just afraid to speak against Tobias.
Tobias took his place on the throne while guards forced Kyrell to his knees in the center of the hall. I stood beside him, playing the role of the defeated bride.
Now comes the hard part. Making them believe.
"Behold," Tobias announced to the crowd, "the price of treason and corruption. Prince Kyrell will die for his crimes, and Lady Luella will bear witness to the consequences of defying rightful authority."
Keep talking, you bastard. Give me time to get into position.
Through our bond, Kyrell and I coordinated our movements perfectly. While I appeared to be standing in grief beside him, I was actually positioning myself near the guards who held the real evidence we needed.
The King. Still alive on his stretcher. Still able to testify if we can wake him.
"Any last words, brother?" Tobias asked mockingly.
That was our signal.
Kyrell's shadows erupted throughout the hall with devastating force, but instead of attacking people, they targeted specific objects. The vial of poison Tobias had used on his father. The documents he'd forged to frame us. The magical artifacts he'd stolen.
Everything we need to prove the truth.
While the crowd panicked in the sudden darkness, I grabbed the antidote from Tobias's robes and administered it to Kyrell in one swift motion.
Please let this work. Please let us not be too late.
When Kyrell's shadows cleared, the evidence of Tobias's crimes lay scattered across the hall floor for everyone to see. Documents in his own handwriting. Poison bottles labeled with the King's name. Testimony from servants he'd thought were too frightened to speak.
Look at it all. Years of carefully hidden crimes exposed in seconds.
"Lies!" Tobias screamed, his perfect mask completely gone. "They're framing me!"
But his own father chose that moment to wake up, the King's weak voice carrying clearly through the silent hall:
"My son... Tobias... poisoned me..."
The truth. Finally, the truth.
The assembled nobles looked from the evidence to their dying king to Tobias's panicked face. The scents in the room shifted from fear to shock to outrage.
They're seeing him for what he really is. Finally.
"You murdered your own father," Lord Aldrich said, his voice shaking with disgust. "You tortured your brother and tried to frame innocent people."
Even his supporters are turning against him now.
"I did it for the kingdom!" Tobias shrieked, his composure completely shattered. "I made the hard choices no one else would make!"
Still trying to justify it. Still believing he was right.
But the court had heard enough. Guards who had once served Tobias loyally now turned their weapons on him.
It's over. The lies are exposed, and justice is finally possible.
Through our mate bond, I felt Kyrell's strength returning as the antidote worked through his system. We had done it. We had exposed the truth and defeated the monster who had tried to destroy us both.
We won. Together, we won.
