Chapter 442

Ch. 442 / 450 May 05, 2026

The ship rocked gently as it neared the Crimson Isles, the jagged cliffs of the island rising ominously from the mist. The air was thick, carrying an unnatural weight that pressed against Elyra’s chest. She stood at the bow, her gaze fixed on the shoreline, where dark forests and crimson sands stretched endlessly.

Behind her, Dain approached, his footsteps heavy. “We’re close,” he said, his voice low.

Elyra nodded, her fingers brushing against the sigil on her palm. It had burned faintly throughout the journey, as though the land itself was calling to her. “Too close,” she murmured.

The sailors anchored the ship, and the small crew disembarked onto the blood-red sand. Elyra crouched, running her fingers through the grains. They crumbled under her touch like ash, and she recoiled.

“This place…” she whispered, her voice trailing off.

Dain stood beside her, scanning the treeline with wary eyes. “It’s steeped in something ancient,” he said, his tone grim. “The kind of power that doesn’t fade. It feels alive—and it doesn’t want us here.”

Selene stepped onto the shore, her sharp gaze assessing their surroundings. “The messenger wasn’t exaggerating,” she said. “There’s something wrong with this place.”

Elyra straightened, brushing the sand from her hands. “Stay close. Whatever’s here, it’s watching us.”

The group moved cautiously through the dense forest, the air growing heavier with each step. The trees loomed high above them, their gnarled branches clawing at the sky. A faint hum vibrated beneath Elyra’s feet, and she paused, placing a hand against a nearby tree.

She gasped. The bark was warm, pulsing faintly like a heartbeat.

“What is it?” Dain asked, stepping closer.

Elyra pulled her hand back, her heart racing. “The land—it’s alive. I can feel it.”

Dain’s jaw tightened, and he scanned their surroundings again, his unease palpable. “Alive and hostile. We shouldn’t linger.”

Selene frowned, her hand resting on the hilt of her blade. “If this is what’s left of the shard’s influence, it’s more dangerous than we thought.”

The faint hum beneath their feet grew louder, and Elyra’s sigil began to glow faintly. She exchanged a glance with Dain, whose own sigil responded in kind.

“This isn’t just a remnant,” Elyra said, her voice tense. “It’s spreading.”

They reached a clearing where the air felt suffocating, thick with the residue of shadow magic. In the center of the clearing, a faint glow caught Elyra’s eye—a fragment of the shard’s energy, pulsing like a heartbeat.

Dain stepped forward cautiously. “That’s what’s been calling us,” he said.

Elyra nodded, but before she could respond, a rustling in the trees made her freeze. The group drew their weapons, forming a protective circle.

“Stay sharp,” Selene hissed, her blade gleaming in the dim light.

The rustling grew louder, and then, out of the shadows, they emerged.

Shadow creatures.

But these were unlike any Elyra had seen before. Their forms were sleek and humanoid, their eyes glowing a deep, menacing red. They moved with a precision that was unnerving, circling the group like predators sizing up their prey.

“They’re different,” Dain muttered, his grip tightening on his weapon. “Smarter.”

One of the creatures stepped forward, its red eyes locking onto Elyra. It tilted its head, almost as if studying her, and then it spoke.

A guttural, distorted voice emerged. “The Wraith welcomes you,” it said, its lips curling into a twisted grin.

Elyra’s heart raced, and she stepped back instinctively. “It can talk,” she whispered, her voice trembling.

Before anyone could react, the creatures lunged.

The clearing erupted into chaos as blades clashed with shadow. Elyra fought with everything she had, her sigil glowing brighter with each strike. But these creatures were fast—too fast—and their coordination was unlike anything they’d faced before.

Dain fought beside her, his movements fierce and calculated. “We can’t hold them off forever,” he shouted over the chaos.

Elyra slashed through one creature, only for two more to take its place. “We have to break through!” she yelled, her chest heaving.

The group pushed forward, but the creatures were relentless, their red eyes gleaming with a sinister intelligence.

Suddenly, a piercing scream echoed through the clearing, and Elyra turned to see one of the sailors dragged into the shadows, his cries cutting off abruptly.

“We’re surrounded!” Selene shouted, her blade slicing through another creature.

Elyra’s sigil burned with renewed intensity, and she felt a surge of energy course through her. She raised her hand, releasing a burst of light that temporarily blinded the creatures.

“Go!” she yelled.

The group broke through the line, running toward the forest. But the creatures didn’t retreat. They followed, their glowing eyes piercing the darkness.

As they fled, Elyra glanced over her shoulder. The creatures stopped at the edge of the forest, watching them with an eerie stillness.

One of them raised a clawed hand, pointing directly at Elyra.

“The Wraith awaits,” it said, its voice echoing in her mind.

-: The party is ambushed by shadow creatures with glowing red eyes, more intelligent and organized than before.
