Chapter 445

Ch. 445 / 450 May 05, 2026

The air in the chamber felt suffocating, heavy with shadow and whispers that coiled around Elyra like a serpent. The tendrils from the chamber walls gripped her wrists and ankles, pulling her toward the center of the room. Their whispers echoed in her mind, soft but insidious.

“Let go of the light. The shadow is where you belong.”

Elyra gritted her teeth, her heart pounding as she fought against their pull. The sigil on her palm burned brightly, its light struggling to push back the encroaching darkness. She could feel the tendrils digging deeper, not just into her body but her mind, testing her resolve.

Across the chamber, Dain was bound by tendrils as well, but his struggle was different. While Elyra resisted with unwavering defiance, Dain seemed torn. The tendrils around him pulsed with an eerie rhythm, as though feeding off the fragments of shadow still lingering in his soul.

“Dain!” Elyra shouted, her voice piercing through the oppressive darkness. “Don’t listen to them. Fight it!”

His head lifted slightly, his face pale and contorted with pain. “It’s… stronger than before,” he rasped, his voice trembling. “It’s in my head, Elyra. It knows me.”

“You’re stronger than it!” Elyra countered, her voice fierce. “You’ve fought this before, and you won. You can do it again.”

But Dain’s eyes flickered—a faint glow of shadow and light, caught in a tug-of-war. The whispers around him grew louder, overlapping in a sinister chorus.

“You were born of shadow. It is your destiny.”

The tendrils tightened their hold on him, pulling him to his knees. His breaths came in ragged gasps, and the sigil on his palm flickered as though it, too, was being tested.

Elyra felt a surge of desperation. She couldn’t lose him now—not after everything they’d endured. Summoning every ounce of strength, she focused on the light within her. The sigil on her palm flared, its radiant glow spreading across her body. The tendrils binding her recoiled slightly, hissing in protest.

“Dain!” she cried again, her voice steadier now. “Look at me!”

His eyes met hers, and for a brief moment, the shadows in them dimmed. She saw the brother she’d fought so hard to save, the man who had chosen to stand by her side despite his past mistakes.

“Remember who you are,” Elyra said, her tone softer but no less commanding. “You’re not a creature of the shadow, Dain. You’re my brother. And you’re stronger than this.”

Dain’s gaze flickered, his jaw clenching as he fought against the whispers. His hand trembled as the sigil on his palm began to glow faintly, its light struggling to emerge.

“You are the shadow’s vessel,” the whispers hissed, louder now. “You cannot escape what you are.”

“No,” Dain growled, his voice low but filled with defiance. “I’m not your vessel. I’m not yours.”

With a guttural shout, he pulled against the tendrils, the sigil on his palm igniting in a blaze of light and shadow intertwined. The tendrils shattered, dissolving into wisps of smoke as he collapsed to the floor, gasping for breath.

Elyra’s relief was short-lived. As she moved toward him, she noticed something strange. The sigil on Dain’s hand had changed. What was once a mark of unity between them had shifted, twisting into a jagged design that resembled the Wraith’s ancient symbol.

“Dain…” she whispered, her voice trembling.

He lifted his hand, his expression darkening as he stared at the new mark. “What… what is this?”

Before Elyra could respond, the Court Leader stepped forward, his movements slow and deliberate. The warriors surrounding them knelt in unison, their heads bowed low as though in reverence.

Elyra’s chest tightened with unease. She instinctively stepped in front of Dain, shielding him from the Court Leader’s gaze.

The Leader stopped a few paces away, his glowing eyes fixated on Dain’s sigil. He tilted his head slightly, as though studying the mark.

“You are the one we’ve been waiting for,” the Leader said, his voice low and reverent.

Dain stumbled back, shaking his head. “No… no, I’m not,” he said, his voice laced with panic. “I don’t want this.”

The Leader took another step closer, his tone unwavering. “The Wraith has chosen you. You are its vessel. Its harbinger.”

Elyra clenched her fists, her light flaring instinctively. “He’s not your harbinger,” she said fiercely. “He’s not yours to claim.”

The Leader ignored her, his focus solely on Dain. Slowly, he lowered himself to one knee, bowing his head. “The Wraith’s mark does not lie. You are its chosen.”

The warriors followed suit, their voices rising in a chant that reverberated through the chamber.

“Harbinger of Shadow. Harbinger of Balance.”

Dain’s breaths quickened, his hands trembling as he looked down at the mark on his palm. “This isn’t me,” he whispered. “This isn’t who I am.”

Elyra stepped closer, placing a hand on his shoulder. “It doesn’t have to be,” she said firmly. “We’ll figure this out. Together.”

But even as she spoke, unease coiled in her gut. The mark on Dain’s hand pulsed faintly, its glow ominous.

-: The Court Leader knelt before Dain, saying, “You are the one we’ve been waiting for.”
