I Wanna Ruin Our Friendship

The Power Shift

Ch. 16 / 162 Apr 09, 2026

"You're pathetic!" Logan snapped, stepping toward Vanessa with fists clenched.

Laughter echoed through the cafeteria as my cheeks burned hot, humiliation flooding through me. I bolted for the bathroom, questions and emotions swirling.

How could she be so cruel?

Why didn't anyone stop her?

And what now - try to move on or admit I'll never fit in here?

The door creaked open.

"Em?" Logan's voice was gentle but I stiffened, gripping the edges of the sink.

What could he possibly say? That he was sorry? That it wasn't my fault?

His reflection wavered in the mirror as he stepped closer.

"Don't let her get to you. You're better than any of them."

My throat tightened.

Was that true? Or were the popular kids right - was I fooling myself, thinking I could ever belong?

"Go way, Logan." My voice was shaky, barely above a whisper.

"Emma, c'mon," he pleaded. "You're stronger than this—"

"Please..." I cut him off, gripping the edge of the sink, trying to steady my breathing. My throat burned from holding back the sobs, my chest tight with and the weight of everything.

Silence stretched between us. Then, after a moment, I heard him sigh and retreat. His footsteps faded, leaving me alone with my reflection—eyes red, lips trembling, a storm of emotions swirling in my chest.

Then—more footsteps.

I stiffened, my heart hammering, thinking Vanessa’s clique had come to gloat. But when I heard Sarah’s voice, a wave of relief washed over me.

"Emma," she called gently. "There are some girls here who want to talk to you."

I wiped at my cheeks, my voice hoarse. "Sarah, I'm really not in the mood."

"They're Vanessa’s victims too."

That made me pause. One by one, their voices came through the door.

"She spread a rumor that I cheated on my boyfriend."

"She got me benched from the soccer team by lying to the coach."

"She made a fake account pretending to be me and sent my ex insane texts."

Each confession chipped away at my isolation. I wasn’t alone. I never had been.

Slowly, I pushed open the stall door. The girls stood there, eyes filled with quiet understanding. No judgment. No pity. Just solidarity.

Then Sarah stepped forward and pulled me into a hug. The others followed.

"We can't let her keep doing this," Sarah said firmly.

I swallowed hard. "What are we supposed to do?"

One of the girls—someone I barely knew—spoke up. "We testify. We make a report and send it to the counselor."

Sarah nodded. "We’re behind you, Emma. We’ll help you if you help us."

For the first time in a long time, I felt something shift inside me.

Hope.

And this time, I wasn’t going to let Vanessa win.

The next day, I took the first step by scheduling a meeting with the school counselor. She flipped through the pages, her face shifting from skepticism to shock.

“This is… troubling,” she said, brows knitting together as she looked up. “Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I promise, we’ll handle it.”

And they did.

The next morning, an emergency assembly was called.

The whole school buzzed with curiosity as students filled the auditorium, whispering to each other.

Then the principal took the stage, clearing her throat.

“Vanessa Carter has been found responsible for multiple incidents of harassment, manipulation, and targeted bullying,” she announced, her voice echoing through the room.

“Effective immediately, she is suspended for two weeks and barred from all school events, including the championship basketball game, the upcoming dance, and the spring talent show.”

A ripple of gasps and murmurs spread through the crowd. Then, the principal turned toward the glowering, arms-crossed blonde standing off to the side.

“Furthermore, she is required to issue a public apology to her victims.”

A murmur of satisfaction rippled through the crowd. People actually clapped.

Vanessa huffed dramatically, rolling her eyes. “Apologize? For what? Some of you need to learn how to take a joke.”

The principal’s brow arched sharply. “Miss Carter.”

Vanessa scowled. The entire school was watching.

Her shoulders stiffened, but she gritted her teeth and turned to face the crowd.

“I’m sorry,” she muttered, voice flat, forced, fake. “There. Happy?”

But nobody was buying it.

By the end of the day, Vanessa was seen scrubbing graffiti off lockers, a counselor’s aide standing nearby to ensure she actually did the work.

Her social status crumbled before my eyes.

And I wasn’t sorry at all.

The weight of the day was still sinking in when I stepped into the school parking lot later that afternoon.

I was still processing everything. The rush of revenge, the justice, the absolute thrill of knowing Vanessa finally paid for what she did.

And then—

“Emma.”

I barely had time to react before Logan’s fingers curled around my wrist.

Before I could say anything, he spun me around, backing me against the side of his car, his body crowding mine in the best, most overwhelming way possible.

I gasped, eyes widening as he braced one hand beside my head, his chest brushing mine, his scent filling my senses—smoke, cedar, something intoxicatingly him.

“Logan—”

His lips crashed into mine.

The shock of it stole my breath.

The kiss was wild, fierce, and completely consuming, like he’d been holding it back for too long and finally decided he couldn’t anymore.

I didn’t have time to think.

Didn’t have time to doubt.

I just sank into him, my hands gripping his hoodie, pulling him closer as his fingers dug into my waist, possessive, claiming.

Heat spilled through my veins, an electric mix of adrenaline and want.

The world blurred.

It was just him and me.

The way his lips moved against mine, the way he tilted my chin up, deepening the kiss, the way he—

Logan suddenly broke away, his forehead pressing against mine, his breath heavy and uneven.

His lips curled into a slow, devastating smirk.

“I’m proud of what you’ve done, do you know that?” he murmured.

I could feel the way he was grinning against my mouth, his voice thick with something raw, something real.

My thoughts were a mess, my knees still weak from the way he kissed me like he never wanted to stop.

“Wh—what?” was all I managed to mumble, my voice pathetically shaky.

He chuckled, the sound low and rough, his thumb brushing the edge of my jaw.

“You took her down,” he murmured, his lips grazing my temple, lingering. “And you didn’t even break a sweat.”

I swallowed, heart pounding. “I wasn’t going to let her win. Not this time. Not after learning what she did to those girls too.”

Logan pulled back just enough to meet my eyes.

And for a long, breath-stealing second, he just looked at me.

Like I was his greatest discovery.

Like I was his favorite kind of chaos.

“Yeah,” he murmured, brushing a strand of hair from my face. “That’s what I love about you.”
