Ciara's brown eyes surveyed the familiar building as she cautiously approaches her early life home. The neat, white painted house adorned with wild rises and by creeping up the tall walls had always represented warmth, love, and stability.
Yet as she approached the giant gate, Ciara could not help but feel a pang of expedition. Nine months had exceeded since she left home and her brother, Dwayne, with no note or explanation.
She had made a course with herself to leave behind the sorrows that enveloped which appeared too tough to, on the quest of finding the root of her parent's strange death, she got tangled up, and it became more complex when she fell in love instead.
She never for once, thought about returning home soon or how much hurt her brother might have been for the past months. Her initial thought from the start was coming back home and bringing with her the answer they both has been searching for -however, she was wrong. Things did not turn out as she had hoped it to.
Upon reaching the huge gate, she input the pass code -she still remembers like the lines on her palms, and she was glad her brother did not have it changed. As she walked into the spacious compound she used to love running and with her brother, old memories came flooding in and Ciara had to force back the tears that were threatening to fall.
She had missed home, the faces that used to be around and the smells of the fragrance from the flowers almost everywhere around the house.
She knocked gently on the door that lead into the main house, her heart was pounding heavily in her chest, unsure of what she expects once she stepped back into the world she had abandoned. After a moment of anguish-stricken silence, the door finally creaks open. From behind, it emerged Dwayne, his warm dark eyes widened in nothing but astonishment.
"Ciara? Is this really you?" He choked out as he stared at his younger sister. There was something in his voice that Ciara failed to fathom at the moment.
Ciara took a sharp breath in, hesitating before she finally replied to him. "Yes, Dwayne. It's me, your younger sister." She whispered, her voice faltering, swollen with emotions.
Without a second delay, Dwayne engulf Ciara in a decent yet shielding embrace. Overwhelmed by the relief flooding her senses, Ciara allowed herself to be enveloped within his acquainted, caring grasp.
Bounced against Dwayne's chest, she could hear his pondering heart as fast as her own. The weight of the months apart and the immensity of their love crashing down on them both. As they pulled away, Ciara found herself enveloped by her brother's gaze, eyes full of relief, confusion and that of anger too.
"Ciara, what happened, why?" Dwayne asked, clearly struggling to process her unexpected reappearance. Despite relieve to have her back after these months, the raw hurt as a result of her sudden disappearance was apparent in his facial expression.
Ciara looked down at her trembling hands, grasping for the words that will appropriately express the sooner and regret that flowed through her veins. She searched within herself for the best answer to give him, she knows how much her disappearance would have caused him.
Sucking her breath in, she opened her mouth to speak. "I needed to get answers. I couldn't bear it -the memories, the pains. I don't know how to tell you. So, I just left." She stuttered in response, folding her trembling hands.
She glanced up, fearfully of her brother's response. But as their eyes met, Ciara found not anger in Dwayne's gaze but pains and understanding.
Dwayne sighed deeply. "I wished you would talk to me, Ciara. I thought I had lost you too." He told her with sincerity laced in his voice. "I went to your place of work, but none was able to tell about yourwhereabouts, I searched all around the States but you seem to have vanished into the thin air."
Ciara's coronary heart arched at the sight of her strong, Stoic older brother bowed by her actions. She saw in his watery eyes a mirror of her pain.
She can't tell him -no, she can't just bring herself to it. Not only that, but she knows how badly it will digest if her brother ever finds out she did not get away to ease her pain but got herself tangled in a secret marriage instead.
It was always her brother's big dream to be present during her marriage ceremony, to cheer her up and be there for her on that day, but in return, she shattered his dream. She had decided to keep it to herself instead, making it her own little secret -the only secret of hers that her brother must never find out.
"I'm so sorry, Dwayne, I really am. I was wrong, and I know now; I should have stayed. I thought of you alone, taking care of everything -that's what brought me back." She told him preferring the truth itself.
Dwayne smiled warmly at her as he ushered her in, his gladness managed to take over his anger and pain. The thought of his sister coming back to him and to stay was enough to make his heart soar.
As they sat down together by the warmth of the crackling hearth, they spoke candidly of their time apart, of the arching loneliness they had each endured, and the discoveries they had made. An unspoken bond was rekindled between them, their connection built brick by brick, as strong and true as the walls that stood around them.
Dwayne narrates an account of his ceaseless drive to keep his parent legacy's alive through their family's companies, which he had, through hard work and perseverance, restored to thriving business. As her brother discussed everything -Ciara felt a rush of genuine pride for her brother.
Likewise, Ciara imparted her experiences, detailing the disillusionment and longing that had tainted her solitary existence in the bustling city. Eventually, she confessed that during her time away, she had come to realize that the essence of healing was to be found not in escapism, but in restoring the family bonds and the ties to their heritage.
As the siblings spoke, the early evening sun began its path below the horizon, staining, and the sky with hues of buttery gold and tender pink. The comforting aroma of their mother's favorite Rosemary -spiked stew drifted towards them, an ethereal reminder of the love that lingered among their shared memories.
When the remnants of daylight had ebbed away, and stars begun to pepper the heavens, Ciara finally broached the topic she'd been afraid to ask. "Dwayne, you don't have to answer, but...Is there a place here for me? Can I pick up where I left off?"
Dwayne contemplated over her sister's words for a moment; his response was quiet but infinitely sincere. "There's always a place for you here, Ciara. You're a part of this family, this town, and this always will be. We'll walk this route together."
As they gazed at one another, the ties between them were forged anew, braided by the paths of heartache and the unyielding strength of familiar love. Ciara felt her heart swell with gratitude. With her older brother by her side, she knew that not only could she reassemble the shards of her life, but she could bring in a new dawn of resilience and hope.
It was in that quiet moment, with the flames of the hearth casting a gentle glow around the quaint fireplace, that Ciara truly understood the beauty of a broken, mended heart. There, in the same home she had grown up in, she had found her sanctuary. The adventure was far from over, but Ciara knew the tides of sorrow were subsequently starting to recede.
