My wolf? Like, my own?
A mixture of fear, adrenaline, and the freaking need to jump up and down while screaming, "Yes! Woohoo! IIIIIIH!" rushed through me while I took in the massive white wolf. Her fur looked so smooth and soft, gently waving in the wind. To say she was beautiful was a clear understatement.
But she didn't seem to share my enthusiasm; while I felt like a bubble about to burst, her eyes still followed the dancing northern light. So far away now, I could only imagine where it had been.
The woman, Selene, suddenly smacked the beast's shoulder, and her head snapped in her direction with a low growl. My breath stuck in my throat; of course, she didn't want me. Who wanted to be dealt the weak human girl?
"Dirfta! It is not her fault!"
She scolded, and the beast answered with a heavy huff and nodded.
Then her eyes found me, and time stopped. The moment I've seen in so many films love at first sight, where everything suddenly became unimportant. It was this moment. What I felt when I saw her, it could only be described as love.
The feeling of being complete, enough, everything I was supposed to be, tingled on my skin. And to my relief, I swear I saw the animal smile.
"There you go! She's sad about her mate, and it hurts even if she hasn't connected with him. The beasts are stronger bonded to one another than the humans; that is also why you need the wolf to find your destined one. They can smell it and feel it, while the human needs the touch to know. Remember that strange electrical sensation over your skin when he touched you? That was the mate bond telling you he was your mate."
My heart sank, I felt terrible for her, but it also scared me.
"Does this mean she will do anything to get him back?"
I asked a little hesitantly, scared of the answer. I'm all for helping Toke and Fury, especially if they are in trouble. But do I want a beast, a creature to become part of my soul and mind that might just run for her mate? Forgive all, forget everything? I've seen these kinds of unhealthy relationships even on Earth, but in this case, it will mean I can't even object if she takes over. I've seen Fury take over for Toke; I know the wolf can be strong enough to push through if it feels it needs to.
I jump back as the beast lay down with a heavy thud and scoff, looking up at me, then to the side before scoffing again. Selene laughed and let her delicate fingers brush through her thick fur. I got a feeling Drifta was offended, deliberately looking away from me even when it made her lie in an awkward position.
"Oh, it will make more sense when you are merged, child."
She still chuckled and petted the giant wolf like he was a sulking kid.
"Oh, she can hear your thoughts; she is a part of you after all. But, you will hear and feel her too when you find each other. I promise it will make more sense, and no. You have nothing to be afraid of. She cares for your safety and happiness as much as her own. If not more."
"Oh."
Again with those highly intelligent answers of mine, Why can't I think of anything better than `oh`? I scolded myself and didn't realize it before Drifta almost chuckled. The sound was really strange, carnal, but not a growl. She is freaking chuckled, ohh... Yeah, because she hears my thoughts. This is going to take some time to get used to.
"Just relax; she won't hurt you. Stand still, deep breaths, and accept."
Confused, I looked at Selene, just to see from the corner of my eyes that Drifta had moved. No, she didn't just move; with her head held low and her ears folded back, she ran straight for me. I took a couple of stumbling steps backward before I heard Selene's voice again, urging me to relax. Take a deep breath for me to remember that for Drifta to hurt me was the same as her hurting herself. Trust her. Accept her.
Trust is such a simple word. A word people throw around themselves as much as " I love you-s" I paused at the realization, like a light lit in my mind. I used that word myself, just when I saw her. I took a deep breath, getting ready to face her and calm down. But just as I opened my eyes to accept her, she collided with me with full force.
The collision was nothing like I expected; the impact I waited for never came. Instead, there was a rush of wind brushing past me, on me, all the way through me, and together, we fell back. Soft and warm colors embraced us as the fall continued. But I fell with a smile; never have I felt so complete and so safe. Fulfilled. I could fall for eternity, and I would not object.
Memories and images flashed through my mind, voices and songs. Her life blended with mine like we exchanged everything that was stored inside of us, everything that had made us who we were. Pain, hatred, and frustrations. Ups and downs, big and small events. Everything opened up, and nothing could hide; nothing would hide.
When everything was done, silence followed. Life slowed down; I relaxed back in the soft fall. No, we relaxed into the soft fall. No fear of what is to come, no regrets.
I gasped and jolted up. Hearing her voice in my head sent shivers of shock rippling through my body. Her voice was clear and strong, nothing like a whisper, a distanced voice that could make you think you were genuinely losing your mind. She filled my head with her chuckle. In the confusion, I barely noticed where I was. That the soft grass around me now felt cold and wet by mist. That the fire had almost burned down, and I barely registered the missing beat of drums.
"Let us do this!"
The sound of bones breaking inside my head made me want to empty my stomach. My skin burned, stretched, and tore open. I had no control over my body when it started to twist and bend in unnatural ways. I heard myself scream, but it was so far away. Yet I felt the roaring cry of pain burns in my throat, screaming that turned hoarse. Screams and shouting abruptly stopped as my throat tightened, and my mouth disappeared from my face.
Further and further, something pushed me back, losing my body losing my soul. It was the strangest sensation, giving her my place. Taking the backseat. She formed slowly in the shine of the moonlight and between the dancing shadows of the fire. Her white fur lit up the dark night, and when she lifted her head and howled to the sky, an incredible sensation of power surged through me.
I can't believe I never noticed how bright the colors were here.
How I never noticed that the green grass had three different shades of green, creating the illusion of the green grass, I have always seen up till now.
Then the scents around me flooded, flowers, moist soil, burned wood, smoke, wet wood, rabbits, birds. It was overwhelming, but the Drifta's head snapped in the direction of Tew.
Tilting her head to the side, his scent talked to us. Family. The word rushed through her mind as a revelation. She was stating the fact. He looked so tired where he was sitting. Dark circles under his eyes, his body almost slumped forward as he watched us. Drifta felt his energy, knew it was spent, knew he even struggled to sit up straight as he slumped forward. Yet he smiled, looked her up and down, and the smile warmed her heart, warmed my heart.
"I should have known your stubborn ass would not be a normal wolf! You did good little sister; Father will be so proud of you!"
