Tears flow freely as I wrap my arms around Ryker's neck, my emotions overwhelming me. 'Ryker, I missed you so much. I'm so sorry for leaving. I should have come to you instead,' I confess, my voice heavy with regret.
Ryker's strong, masculine arms envelop me, providing a comforting refuge as he reassures me, 'It's okay, Astrid. I know you didn't want to leave. I know you were frightened and forced to leave. We are together now, and that's all that matters.' Our eyes lock once more, and an electric charge courses between us before our lips collide in a passionate, electrifying kiss.
Our bodies heat up, and sparks fly as we share our first kiss in what feels like an eternity, but surprisingly, I wouldn't mind if this moment lasted forever. Finally, we break apart, both of us breathing heavily. The desire between us is undeniable, but the urgency of the war outside demands our attention.
Ryker's lips brush against my neck, eliciting a squeaky yelp from me and another surge of sparks racing across my skin. He gazes at me with affection, his words carrying the weight of our mission. 'As much as I want to stay like this forever with you, Astrid, we need to destroy Alpha Zenith,' he reminds me.
I nod in agreement, determination welling up within me. 'Alpha Zenith is mine,' I declare before shifting into my large, majestic white wolf.
Ryker follows suit, transforming into his imposing black wolf. We are nearly the same size, with me just slightly smaller. In unison, we let out a resounding howl, a declaration to Alpha Zenith that we are coming for him.
Bursting out of the cell, we charge up the stairs and out of the pack house. The aftermath of the battle unfolds before us, with injured wolves scattered everywhere and many fallen warriors and pack members from Shady Crest. It's a devastating sight, and I can see numerous badly injured warriors in need of assistance.
I sprint around, searching for any sign of Alpha Zenith. His scent eventually leads me away from the chaotic battle, through the tall grass, and into the thick forest. I can sense he's close, and I'm aware that Ryker is not far behind, vigilant and watching my back as we close in on Alpha Zenith.
Suddenly, a ferocious growl to my right jolts my attention, and I swiftly turn to confront Alpha Zenith in his wolf form, lunging toward me. We engage in a fierce struggle, rolling a few metres, with Alpha Zenith ultimately pinning me down. My claws manage to tear into his lower stomach, causing him to whimper in pain and retaliate by thrashing his claws into my chest. In a desperate bid, I roll from underneath him and leap onto his back, biting down hard on the back of his neck, tearing away a piece of flesh. He howls in agony and falls back, crushing me beneath his massive frame.
Pinned beneath him, I unleash my fury, ripping into his ribs, the sound of bones breaking filling the air. Eventually, Alpha Zenith retreats, and we face each other with snarls and blood-drenched faces, both battered and wounded.
We circle one another warily. I can sense Ryker's approaching presence from behind Alpha Zenith. I emit a growl as a warning to Ryker to stay back. But I can't afford to wait any longer as Alpha Zenith and I simultaneously lunge at each other, biting and clawing viciously.
In the midst of our brutal struggle, his neck is momentarily exposed, and I seize the opportunity, sinking my teeth in with all the fury and determination born from the memory of him killing my mother. Adrenaline courses through me as I tear into his neck, blood spattering in all directions. I relentlessly shake him, refusing to let go until his whimpers and cries fall silent. Even after I know he's dead, I continue, my anger and vengeance fueling my fierce assault as I growl and rip more flesh from his lifeless body.
Suddenly, Ryker's voice pierces through my frenzied state. 'Astrid! That's enough! He's dead!' He cautiously approaches from behind me, now in his human form.
My growl intensifies, a clear warning to Ryker to stay back, and I resume mauling and tearing into Alpha Zenith's lifeless form.
Ryker, frozen in place, is startled by my response. 'Astrid,' he says softly, 'you have killed him. You can let him go now. It's over. You've got your vengeance.' His warm arms wrap around me, a desperate plea in his voice. 'Astrid! You need to stop. You need to let go and shift back into your human form. This isn't you, Astrid. Don't become the monster he was. Please, I'm begging you,' he whispers.
His words penetrate my frenzied state, and I flinch at the realization of what I've been doing. What have I become? I've avenged my mother's death by killing him, but here I am, still violently tearing him apart, losing myself in the process.
Reluctantly, I release Alpha Zenith's lifeless body, turning to look at Ryker, my face reflecting the turmoil within me. I take a step toward him but stumble, falling into his lap. Despite my wounds, I feel my wounds slowly healing, yet I am weak and drained from my injuries.
I must have blacked out, my vision blurring into unconsciousness. When I finally open my eyes, I find myself cradled in Ryker's strong arms. He's carrying me across the battlefield toward the assembled members of both Shady Crest and Shadow Crest. The entire conflict has ground to a halt, and it's evident that the Shady Crest members have felt the death of their Alpha Zenith, causing them to cease fighting.
As we approach the imposing Shady Crest pack house, every pack member and warrior fall to their knees, a unanimous gesture of submission. Confusion gnaws at me, and I turn to Ryker, seeking answers. 'Why are they bowing to us?' I ask with wonder.
Ryker offers his insight. 'The moment you kill an alpha, his pack members become your pack members,' he explains, his gaze locked onto mine. The fact that I haven't officially joined a pack continues to puzzle me, and I express my confusion, saying, 'But, I'm not officially part of a pack yet.'
Ryker responds with a warm smile, his eyes radiating passion as he reveals, 'By killing their alpha, you automatically made yourself their Luna.'
Then he makes a heartfelt request, his voice tinged with emotion. 'Accept me as your mate, Astrid. Accept your place by my side as my equal and as the Luna of Shadow Crest, and let us combine our packs.'
