The Alpha's Mate Who Cried Wolf

Chapter 140

Ch. 140 / 181 Nov 11, 2025

Suddenly, a strange but warm sensation overcomes me. I look into the darkness ahead, only to find crimson eyes staring right at me, flickering like a flame. My body feels drawn towards the dark, ominous creature, and my mind is spinning as I try to make sense of this inexplicable pull I'm feeling. Approaching closer, in a trance-like state, my wand begins to glow brightly, casting just enough light to reveal two manly hands grasping the bars, his fiery, blood-red eyes still fixed on me.

As I inch closer, I suddenly hear a husky, deep whisper in my mind. ‘This way, come closer. It’s okay, come to me,’ the voice says, its seductive tones echoing through the damp air. Without realizing it, my hand reaches out to touch whoever is beyond the bars. He grips my wrist gently, and I feel a subtle burn on my skin.

Abruptly, Yiselda hastily grabs my arm and pulls me back with force. ‘Be careful. That is the vampire king, Alec,’ she warns with concern. Raising her wand, the dungeon cell lights up, revealing the silhouette of a man with dark hair and light brown eyes. Alec flourishes his black cloak over his face and retreats to the far corner, trying to shield himself from Yiselda’s blinding light. My mouth parts in surprise, having caught a glimpse of the vampire king before he vanished into the shadows.

I discreetly examine my wrist, noting the peculiar mark etched upon it. A strange sensation runs through my body, but I shake it off, returning my attention to Alec. As he lowers his cloak slightly, revealing his handsome features, I find myself captivated.

Alec glowers at Yiselda. ‘Could you at least dim that darn light, Yiselda?’ he sneers.

‘Dimulous,’ she says, and her wand dims the light to a soft glow.

Alec lowers his cloak, slowly approaching the bars while keeping his intense gaze on mine. ‘You’re so beautiful. How I would love to taste you,’ he says, his eyes briefly glancing at my neck before returning to meet mine. ‘I have a feeling it would taste sweeter than honey,’ he smiles endearingly, licking his lips to reveal his sharp fangs.

Maintaining my composure, I hold my head high. 'Well, lucky for me, King Alec, you're imprisoned behind these bars. I also don’t plan to be on your menu. Sorry, you won’t get to take a bite,' I quip, giving him a confident smile.

Alec stares at me curiously for a moment, the corners of his mouth tugging into a mischievous grin. 'I don't intend to stay in here indefinitely, Nina,' his demeanour softens.

'How do you know my name?' I ask with my thumb, subconsciously caressing the newly formed blemish on my wrist, radiating a peculiar warmth.

‘I am Alec, vampire king. I can figure out a lot by being in your presence… and I may have overheard one of the other witches call you that,’ he admits playfully.

Suppressing a laugh, I'm amused by his unexpected honesty.

Alec's sweet smile widens as he directs his gaze over my shoulder. 'Yiselda, we have a new guest. How about you let me out so I can give Nina here a proper warm welcome?' he suggests with genuine sincerity.

Yiselda can't help but laugh at the proposition. 'Yeah, right. I’m going to let you out so you can embark on a worldwide escapade, spreading chaos until everyone kneels before you, declaring you ruler of the world,' she scoffs.

Alec adopts a playful tone: 'Why not? It could be lots of fun.'

'Except it's not fun for everyone who dies as a result,' Yiselda argues.

Alec responds with a scoff, crossing his arms before stepping back, his gaze fixed on the wall. 'Those nasty humans deserve to die for what they did to me all those years ago,' King Alec growls, his demeanour shifting suddenly to one of sincere sadness. 'My Juniper, my darling, sweet Juniper,' he murmurs, withdrawing further into the shadows.

As I witness Alec's mourning, a frown creeps onto my face, and a twinge of pity for him settles in my chest. Although I have no knowledge of who Juniper is or what tragedy befell her, the profound grief emanating from Alec is visible. My heart aches, and a hollow feeling envelops me, prompting me to place my hand on my chest, my expression weighed down by gloom.

‘Luna, are you alright?’ Yiselda inquires, her concern evident.

I nod, stepping back and shaking my head to dispel the lingering thoughts. ‘I’m fine, just a little overwhelmed with Pandora’s Box and its contents,’ I convey.

‘Well, now that the formalities are over and the tour is complete, we shall return downstairs,’ Yiselda declares, turning away.

As I follow her, Alec desperately rams into the bars, clutching them with a sense of urgency. ‘Wait!’ he calls out to me.

Alec reaches out between the bars, his fingertips brushing against my arm, the distance preventing a proper grasp. In the moment, I feel warm sparks emanating from the point of contact, reminiscent of the mate bond, as if Magnus himself were touching me. I gasp, raising my head to see King Alec's warm smile, his gaze locked onto mine. 'Until we meet again, just don't make me wait too long, my queen,' he whispers so low that only I can hear.

I pull my arm away, taking a few steps back, a worried expression on my face.

Fern grabs my hand, pulling me behind her as we approach the exit. Glancing over my shoulder, I notice King Alec's gaze never leaves me until we reach the opposite end of the dungeon and depart through the door.

Yiselda, with a graceful wave of her wand, closes the door to the dungeon, sealing it with a ward spell. We descend the stairwell of books and walk through the corridor, passing through the large mirror.

Stunned by the recent encounter with King Alec, I find myself immersed deeply in thoughts, trying to make sense of my inexplicable connection with him. Yiselda, attuned to the currents of magic, effortlessly pours another round of tea for us while the rest of the group engages in lively conversation, laughter resonating through the room. However, I struggle to focus on the banter, my mind consumed by the memory of Alec's eyes and the peculiar warmth that lingered on my wrist.

In an attempt to dispel the unsettling emotions, I shake my head, redirecting my thoughts to Magnus. A yearning for his comforting presence fills my heart, and I yearn to be wrapped in his arms for comfort and reassurance.

After finishing my tea, I carefully place the cup on the saucer and rise. 'It's been wonderful seeing you, Yiselda, but it's time for us to return to Shadow Crest. Will you be accompanying us when the Wolf Council returns tomorrow?' I ask.

Yiselda contemplates for a moment before nodding thoughtfully. 'I think it would be wise to be there, just in case,' she nods, a sense of determination in her eyes.

Leaving Pandora's Box, I trail behind Fern, Ria, Ela, and Lilac as we weave through the enchanting menagerie of mystical creatures and animated objects in the corridor. The chicken, cats, and frogs, each with their own peculiar charm, seem to acknowledge our departure. The broom continues its diligent task of sweeping the entrance.
