‘Once the portal opens, you can let go of our hands and enter Silverfay Forest,’ Yiselda instructs, her gaze going from May's to mine.
Sensing the moment's significance, the rest of the pack and I take a few steps back, allowing more space for the initiation into the Midnight Coven. Yiselda, the matriarch of the coven, begins the initiation with a grace that commands the attention of both the earthly and the ethereal.
'Thy coven sprouts like a seed.
Mother Earth, we beseech thee to acknowledge our two new sisters,
like branches budding and flowers blossoming
Add them to our tree.
Thy new sisters of Midnight Coven, we welcome thee.’
The words echo through the night, resonating with the ancient power of the earth. As Yiselda speaks, the ground beneath us quivers, responding to the enchantment. A swirl of dazzling mist envelops Nina and May in a magical embrace. Grass and flowers bloom at their feet, manifesting nature's acknowledgment.
The mist dissipates, leaving behind a radiant portal of light—a gateway to Silverfay Forest. Yiselda, Fern, Ela, Ria, and Lilac wear smiles of approval, nodding at Nina and May, signalling them to step into the mystical realm of familiars.
By breaking the circle and releasing everyone's hands, Nina takes the lead. With a serene smile, she inhales deeply and gracefully disappears into Silverfay Forest, leaving the ordinary world behind. May, bubbling with excitement, follows suit without hesitation, venturing into the realm where familiars await to form a bond with their chosen witches.
Nina P.O.V
I stand in awe, surrounded by the most enchanting woodland I've ever seen. The trees, a myriad of colours—greens, pinks, purples, and blues—emanate a radiant glow as if they're composed of a million diamonds. A silver mist floats in the air, catching the ethereal light and creating a breathtaking sight in the gentle breeze.
May collides with me as she leaps through the portal. Her laughter rings out. 'Sorry,' she chuckles, unfazed by the collision. 'This place is beautiful,' she adds, her eyes wide with wonder.
I smile at her and take her hand. 'Come,' I say, leading her along a dark, inviting path that winds through the magical woodland.
As we explore, we encounter a menagerie of fantastical creatures. A sloth-like being with nubby horns climbs a tree at a leisurely pace, a violet bat hangs upside down, and a three-tailed possum with large eyes peeks out from a tree hollow. I can't help but greet these majestic inhabitants with a wave, much to May's amusement and slight bewilderment.
May suddenly comes to a halt and casts a glance to the left. 'I need to go this way,' she declares with determination.
I follow May as she leads me to a lush bush and kneels beside it. 'Hello, my familiar. I feel you're around here somewhere,' she says, a deep sense of connection guiding her.
'I'm not sensing anything,' I admit, looking around at the majestic and curious creatures observing us.
'That's because we're not near your familiar yet,’ May responds with a knowing smile, her intuition guiding her to this very spot.
The lush underbrush rustles, and from it emerges an adorable fennec fox with a coat of golden fur, immediately capturing May's delighted attention. 'This is the cutest thing I've ever seen!' she squeals with excitement. 'Come forth, little one,' May reassures the fox, 'I'm not going to hurt you.'
The fox, a bundle of caution and curiosity, inches forward and sits in front of May. She extends her hand to pet the fox, setting off a chain reaction of magic that unfurls before our astonished eyes. A brilliant light dances around them as they ascend into the air. May's attire undergoes a magical metamorphosis, shedding casual slacks and a loose top for a dark brown tailored dress with a corset back embellished with breathtaking gold embroidery along the hem and sleeves. May hovers gracefully above the ground, her wand seemingly floating before her. As she leans out to accept it, the wand emits another radiant ray of light, transforming into a masterpiece. A silver swirl at the bottom gives way to jewels and intricate details that extend to the tip.
As May and the fox gently descend to the ground, she kneels, and the fennec fox places its paw on May’s chest. May flinches momentarily, her gaze locked with the fox. 'I can hear what you're thinking!' she exclaims. The fox removes its paw, revealing a paw print-like image on May’s flesh.
May grins, looking at me with sheer excitement. 'Did you see everything that just happened?' she asks.
I nod, captivated by the magical spectacle. 'Yes, that was the most incredible sight I've ever seen! Your dress looks amazing, and your familiar is adorable,’ I tell her, reaching down to scratch behind the fox’s ear.
'Sabre says she likes you,' May laughs.
'Sabre, hey? Well, I like her too,' I reply with a smile.
A portal suddenly appears beside May, revealing Yiselda on the other side. She motions for May to come through. ‘You go home; I’m sure I won’t be too long,’ I tell her.
‘Good luck, Nina. I’ll be waiting for you on the other side,’ May says, hugging me before hurrying back through the portal. It closes immediately behind her, with Sabre clinging to her shoulder as they disappear.
As I venture further, the woods become increasingly desolate and eerie, the path taking on a grim and ominous demeanour. There's an unsettling silence devoid of any signs of life, not even the rustling of leaves or critters. The trees stand lifeless, drained of colour, casting a sombre shadow over the surroundings. Despite the foreboding atmosphere, an inexplicable feeling urges me to press on. It's as if there's an unseen force guiding me through this darkened part of the woods.
The journey through the gloom is challenging, with a muddy trail underfoot and brittle branches snapping against my face. But with each step, I encourage myself to continue. 'You can do it, Nina. One step at a time,' I whisper in the eerie silence.
