As I step into the basement, the once familiar and drab room has transformed into a whimsical apothecary. Dried plants and herbs dangle from the walls, and shelves are lined with an array of jars, their contents veiled in mystery—contents I'm not entirely sure I want to discover.
My attention is immediately drawn to the sizable, bubbling cauldron surrounded by Ria, Fern, Lilac, May, and Ela. They each add enigmatic ingredients, and the air fills with an intoxicating blend of scents.
May waggles her finger at me, narrowing her eyes playfully. 'I wish I could have gone to Pandora's Box with you,' she pouts.
'Next time,' I assure May, offering her a reassuring smile.
'Promise?' she asks, looking at me with hopeful eyes.
Ela chimes in, 'We all promise,' her eyes gleaming sincerely.
Curious, I ask about the source of their magical supplies, twirling in amazement. 'Where did you get all of this?'
Fern grins mischievously, 'Oh, we just used the Materialise spell.'
'How does that spell work?' I ask, recalling Yiselda's use of it to summon a book.
Fern's smile widens, and she explains, 'It's that simple. Just imagine the item you want. For instance, let's say I'm hungry for a cherry pie. I wave my wand and cast, 'Materialise,' while picturing a cherry pie.'
In an instant, a warm cherry pie materializes in Fern's palm, its aroma filling the air. She chuckles, 'Ouch,' as she places it on the table, admitting, 'I probably should have thought of a cold cherry pie.'
Laughter erupts among us.
'Now you try,' Fern encourages me with a smile.
Taking a moment to envision a flawless rose—no blemishes or broken petals—I cast the spell. 'Materialise,' I utter, and as I open my eyes, I find myself holding the exact rose I envisioned.
'Ooh, pretty,' Lilac remarks, and everyone resonates with our shared delight.
'We're conjuring up potions!' Ria beams with enthusiasm, her eyes gleaming with excitement.
Excited, I ask, 'Can I help?'
'Sure!' Ela replies, her response matching my eagerness.
Curiosity brimming, I ask, ‘What potion are you currently making?’
Ela leads me to a table with an open book—the one I took from the forbidden room.
'Hey, that’s my book! I got it from the library,' I frown, slightly surprised.
'Oh, sorry. We saw it on the shelf in the living room and thought no one would mind if we borrowed it,' Ela grins apologetically.
I consider her plea and finally nod, 'I suppose it’s okay, Ela. Just be gentle with it.'
Her joyful squeal and subsequent hug convey her gratitude. I glance at the open page, discovering the recipe for the healing elixir.
'Elixir of Healing: Over bubbling water, add five drops of mermaid tears, a snippet of unicorn hair, the bark of the willow, and a sprig of thyme. Incantation: With these wounds that thee feel, remove the pain and make thee heal. If unwell, don’t let it dwell. Use this spell to make thee well.'
'We just need to add the thyme, Luna. Could you please bring a sprig to the cauldron?' Ela requests.
'Sure,' I reply, making my way to the wall where various herbal sprigs are tied in bundles. A content smile plays on my lips. I pluck a sprig of thyme, handing it to Reaper, who gracefully flies over to the cauldron, dropping it into the bubbling water. The aromatic fusion intensifies, creating a magical ambience in the basement.
Fern takes charge, stirring the contents of the cauldron with a wooden spoon. 'Let's recite the chant together,' she suggests with a joyous glint in her eyes.
I join them at the cauldron, ready to contribute to the magical incantation.
'‘With these wounds that thee feel, remove the pain and make thee heal. If unwell, don’t let it dwell. Use this spell to make thee well,’' we chant in unison. As our voices intertwine, the cauldron responds with a mystical plume of green smoke, signalling the success of our collaborative spell.
Fern grins with satisfaction. 'It's done. Now to bottle it.'
May and I eagerly assist, wielding ladles to transfer the healing potion into waiting vials carefully. Ela, efficient as always, lays out the labels, Ria expertly writes on them, and Lilac positions the vials on a designated shelf, each cork securely sealing the magic within.
As we finish the task at hand, Ela proposes, 'Perhaps we might concoct an elixir of love, fertility, or strength tomorrow?'
In her playful spirit, Fern replies, 'I was thinking the elixir of resistance.'
With a teasing smirk, Lilac chimes in, 'With your snoring, Fern, I thought maybe the elixir of sleep?'
Fern huffs good-naturedly, and our collective laughter fills the room.
I wake up in the warmth of Magnus's embrace, his arms offering a comforting sanctuary. His playful request for today not to be today prompts a grin from me. 'All right, Magnus, today isn't today,' I jest.
His response is a resigned sigh. 'Er, it’s really today, isn’t it?'
'The day the three-boofhead Alphas from the Wolf Council return to tell us whether they support or oppose the witches staying here and what they plan to do if they oppose it?' I remind him.
‘Yeah… that day,’ he mutters.
To lighten the mood, I climb onto Magnus and straddle him. 'Look, I'm sure they've come to their senses and realized that allowing witches into our pack is wonderful now that they've had time to think about it,’ I reassure him.
'I hope so, but just in case, I'll spend the day with your father to see if our warriors are prepared as a precautionary measure,' he decides.
'It sounds like a plan. I’ll spend the day in the basement with the other witches until the Wolf Council arrives,’ I reply.
After breakfast, the witches, armed with enthusiasm and magical intent, head downstairs to the basement. Josie, who is curious and eager to be involved, asks if she can join us. 'Sure,' I tell her, and together with May and Josie, we make our way downstairs.
As we gather in the basement, I ask the four others, ‘So, have we figured out what potion we are making today?’
'We couldn’t agree on one,' Fern replies.
In the midst of our magical brainstorming session, I stroll over to my well-worn book of potions, its pages laden with the secrets of mystical elixirs. Flicking through its contents, I list the various options available. 'Heat resistance, resistance to the cold, breathing underwater, swiftness, deadly nightshade, wolfsbane, an elixir of truth, fire, fertility... Ooh, the elixir of the dead sounds interesting?' I suggest with a glint of curiosity.
However, the reactions from Fern, Ria, Ela, and Lilac are gasps. 'Luna, you can’t choose the elixir of the dead. It’s far too dangerous,' Fern warns.
'Fern is correct. Drinking the potion allows you to see ghosts and poltergeists, which can harm you if you encounter one,' Ela explains, emphasizing the perilous nature of such a concoction.
‘Oh, well, how about we practice some new spells then?’ I propose placing the book of potions down. A sudden burst of inspiration strikes me. ‘We should all go to the town library, to the forbidden room,’ I share, lifting the key that hangs around my neck.
‘What’s in the forbidden room?’ Lilac inquires.
‘Spellbooks and lots of them, along with other interesting items that must be hundreds of years old,’ I reply, a hint of excitement in my voice. The prospect of unlocking ancient knowledge is met with nods and smiles from everyone.
‘Let’s go,’ Ria says, and with a united decision, we set forth on our quest for magical wisdom.
