Desmond?

Ch. 216 / 286 Apr 29, 2026

The nurse hesitated before replying. "I have his number. I can call him now and he will come. But the problem is that the doctor is not in support of of it. I can’t do that without the doctor’s approval. If I go against him, I could lose my job." The nurse humbly replied.

She dosen't want anything that will bring disagreement between her and the doctor in charge of the case. She is a minor, and she have no say. Her own was to obey and run errands.

"I understand what you are saying and your fear. But you can't let things go wrong when you can do something. That’s my father lying there. I think I have every right to decide who treats him. I won't involve you. Anything that happens will be upon my head."

The nurse smiled and looked up to him, "Yes, he's your father, but he is under care. He is currently under the support of the machine issued by the hospital. Your right is limited here. He’s not in your house. This is a hospital. We follow protocol. I can’t just call someone because you want me to. Unless you plan to take him home and treat him there yourself."

Jethro clenched his fists, trying to control his patience. He knew that the nurse was right, but something needs to be done. Even though it would take breaking the rules and protocol. All he needed was for his dad to be okay.

He went on to try and convince the nurse. "You are a nurse, and I'm sure your priority was to save lives, no matter what it takes. Besides, nothing will happen to you. Just give me his number. I will call him myself. Anything that happens will be upon my head."

The nurse hesitated, and her eyes darting toward the hallway as if she was expecting Dr. Maxwell to appear at any moment. "And what happens if they fire me?" she asked skeptically. "If I lose my job over this?"

"You won’t, Trust me." Jethro assured her. "I will make sure you don't lose your job. Just call him. We need this man." Jethro added, and the nurse took a deep breath. She was confused. She didn't know if she should trust him. There was a long pause, but finally, she reached into her pocket and brought out her phone.

"Promise me you will be by my side if I get fired," the nurse said.

"You will not be fired. If my father gets well, I will reward you as well," Jethro said.

She retrieved Desmond’s number and gave Desmond her phone to copy the number. Jethro copied it and dialed the number immediately. His fingers were shaking slightly as he pressed the call button.

It went through; it was ringing, but he wasn't picking up. He cursed under his breath, pacing anxiously before trying again. Still, he didn't pick up.

Anabel felt her stomach twist as she watched her brother. The tension was suffocating. Was this their last hope slipping away?

He tried again, and this time, it didn't go through again. The number had been blocked. Then the nurse sighed and decided to call with her own phone.

"Maybe he doesn't pick up unknown calls. Let me try and call him. He saved my number," she said and pressed the call button. The second the phone rang, Desmond picked up.

"Hello?" Desmond answered.

"Good day, sir." She greeted and went on to explain why she was calling without wasting time. "Sorry for disturbing you, sir. Please, we have an emergency in Skylife hospital, and we need your attention. The patient is in VIP Ward 2, Room 298. His name is Sir Orton. He needs your help. The family is asking for you. Please, sir. Can you come?"

Desmond already knew the case. He saved her number. She had told him she would always reach out to him if she had a case like that. First, there was a pause on the other end before he finally replied, "I’m coming," and hung up.

The nurse turned to Jethro and Anabel. "He’s on his way."

"Thank you very much." Jethro said, feeling some relief. Finally, help is coming. Anabel didn't say anything. She was waiting to see the Desmond who was going to treat her father.

Twenty minutes later, the door to the hospital room opened. Anabel turned toward the entrance, and the sight before her stopped her breath. There he was. Desmond. Her ex-husband.
