Caitlyn's POV
"What?"
I subconsciously exclaimed upon hearing Kaisa's words.
After all, I had never laid eyes on my mother before, and in my father's previous expressions, my mother had always been nothing more than a human.
Now, I was suddenly told that my mother also belonged to a pack of werewolves and was a member of a powerful pack; it was momentarily difficult for me to accept.
"But there might be a misunderstanding in between. However, in the Fullmoon Pack's style, they wouldn't waste so much time here for no reason. Their most important mission is to find the descendants of the pack scattered in the werewolf world," Kaisa said, looking at me squarely. The subtext was that Zed had been keeping an eye on me lately, and I could very well be a descendant of their pack.
"That's impossible; my mother was human, or I wouldn't be just a human too." I couldn't help but feel a wave of panic as I watched things develop beyond my expectations.
"But you already have the ability to transform into a giant wolf, don't you? To be a werewolf who transforms without any rituals, relying only on emotions—this is the first time in my life that I've seen it." Sensing my nervousness, Kaisa's tone became slightly more conciliatory.
"I know you might not be able to take it in at once, but I'm only guessing after all. With all the time that has passed, who knows what Zed is really doing here?" Kaisa pursed her lips, looking a little embarrassed. Perhaps she didn't realize that a random comment would cause me so much trouble.
"Uh, okay. Thank you, Kaisa." I took a deep breath and forced myself to calm down a bit. With a wave of my hand towards Kaisa, I quickly headed in the direction of my father.
After all, he was the only one who currently knew the whole truth.
As I walked down the road, I couldn't help but reflect on what I had once said to Kaisa. Once upon a time, I was profoundly disgusted by the werewolf bloodline because I believed it was unfair to categorize people into different classes based solely on the bloodline they were born with. However, at this moment, I might be thrust into a position of newfound power simply due to the bloodline in my body, which had an ironic effect on my feelings.
Returning home in a daze, I saw that my father coincidentally descended from the attic. Although he hadn't seen me for a few days, a few gray hairs had appeared on his temples, which somewhat alleviated the heavy mood I desperately needed to share just then.
"What's wrong? Caitlyn, you look a little unwell." My father gave me a concerned look and gracefully moved over to sit on the closest couch.
"No... nothing." The long list of questions slowly faded away under my father's kind eyes, and I hoped that Kaisa's recent words were a lie because I couldn't bear the thought of my father revisiting that painful memory.
"Caitlyn, have you forgotten our agreement? You are my daughter, and no matter what happens or what difficulties you face, I am your strongest support. Just tell me; I can help you fix it." My father patted my shoulder.
However, the more he wore this concerned expression, the worse I felt inside. "I've just heard some strange news, and I came to you to confirm whether my mother is truly just a human."
Boom!
As my words fell, the aura surrounding my father instantly intensified, and the glass of water on the table shook a few times before gradually settling.
"Who told you that?" My father attempted to communicate with me in his usual tone, but I could still sense the tumultuous emotions he was experiencing at the moment, tinged with a hint of anger. "Do you know Zed?"
I asked timidly and then observed my father's emotions closely. Upon hearing the name, my father froze momentarily, scrutinizing me as if to ensure I hadn't undergone a transformation of some sort.
"Hmm," my father responded in a somewhat jarred voice after a while. However, it was apparent to me that the mention of Zed's name had stirred some agitation in him. I could even sense the wolf within him emitting an intimidating growl.
"Did he come here for my mother?" I inquired, taking a deep breath before looking up at my father. I waited anxiously for his response.
"It seems that the day has come," my father sighed unexpectedly, nodding somewhat helplessly. "I initially believed I could protect you completely by staying by your side. However, as I grew older and experienced more, I found myself increasingly overwhelmed. There were even moments when I unknowingly placed you on the brink of life and death."
My father abruptly shifted the topic, showing no intention of stopping. "Yeah, you're right. Zed is here for your mother."
"Really? So, is my mother also a werewolf?" My father's words struck my heart like a hammer, and I involuntarily exclaimed. The darkness that engulfed my vision induced a sense of panic throughout my body.
"No, your mother is still human. She's just a bit more special, particularly in a pack like the Fullmoon Pack, where bloodlines hold great significance."
I looked up at my father, a little confused.
"Your maternal grandmother, she was also human. However, after her union with the then-Alpha, she gave birth to two daughters – one being your mother, and the other, your mother's sister. Your mother was human, while her sister was a werewolf."
When I didn't say anything, my father continued.
"Your mother was largely unappreciated as a human without awakened werewolf abilities. It was only then that I had the chance to get close to her, but it took a lot of ups and downs in between. In the end, though, they realized that children born after bonding with humans would have a certain chance of awakening the top werewolf abilities. They went crazy after that period, but unfortunately, they found little success."
My father sighed, his deep eyes looking out the window.
"My mother was the one with the special ability?"
"Yes, except that your mother was still pregnant with you at the time. She was very badly injured when she forcibly transformed to protect me."
My father pursed his lips and stopped his next words.
"So, I really am the one Zed is looking for?"
My eyes widened with shock.
