Never Just Friends

Checkmate?

Ch. 143 / 300 Mar 01, 2026

At school, Hanna noticed a significant change in how people treated her. Students who had once avoided her now nodded in acknowledgment or even stopped to chat. A few even apologized for believing Ciara’s lies.

“Feels good, doesn’t it?” Emily said as they sat together at lunch.

“It does,” Hanna admitted. “But it’s weird, too. I’m not used to people being… kind.

Emily chuckled. “Get used to it. You earned it.”

As they talked, Finn joined them, sliding into the seat beside Hanna. His presence was a source of constant reassurance, and Hanna found herself leaning on him more than ever.

“Got a surprise for you later,” Finn said, his voice low enough for only Hanna to hear.

Hanna raised an eyebrow. “What kind of surprise?”

“You’ll see,” he said with a grin, refusing to elaborate.

That evening, Finn drove Hanna to a quiet hill overlooking the city, the sky painted in hues of pink and orange as the sun set. He pulled a blanket from the back of his car and spread it out on the grass, motioning for her to sit.

“What’s this?” Hanna asked, her curiosity piqued.

“Thought you could use a break,” Finn said, sitting beside her. “You’ve been carrying so much for so long. I wanted to give you a moment to just… breathe.”

Hanna looked at him, her heart swelling. “Thank you,” she said softly.

They sat in comfortable silence, watching the city lights flicker to life as night fell. Finn reached for her hand, his fingers intertwining with hers. It was a simple gesture, but it filled Hanna with a sense of peace she hadn’t felt in months.

Though Ciara hadn’t been seen at school since the confrontation in the auditorium, her presence still loomed like an unspoken threat. The hallways were quieter, the usual undercurrent of gossip and power games now muddled by uncertainty. Students whispered about her absence, their theories ranging from suspension to expulsion to voluntary exile. But the truth was, no one really knew where Ciara had gone—or what she was planning.

The absence of her dominating influence left a strange vacuum, one that others seemed eager to fill. Cliques began to shift, their alliances reshuffling as students tried to navigate the new social landscape. Without Ciara’s iron grip on the school’s hierarchy, small power struggles began to emerge, each group vying for a chance to claim the space she had left behind.

“She’s not the type to just vanish,” Emily said one afternoon as they walked to class. Her voice was sharp, her pace brisk as though the thought of Ciara’s return made her restless. “She’s planning something. I can feel it.”

Hanna frowned, her unease growing as she adjusted the strap of her bag. “I’ve been trying not to think about her,” she admitted, her voice quiet. “But… yeah. It doesn’t feel over. Not with her.”

“It’s not,” Emily said firmly, glancing at Hanna. “You know how she is. She won’t take this lying down. She’s too vindictive for that.”

Hanna sighed, the weight of Emily’s words pressing down on her like a heavy blanket. “I just wish I knew what she was thinking,” she said softly. “What her next move is. If she even has one.”
