Never Just Friends

A Fragile Ally

Ch. 113 / 300 Mar 01, 2026

Ciara hesitated, her eyes darting between Hanna and Emily. For a moment, it looked as though she might turn and walk away. Her fingers fidgeted with the strap of her bag, her usual confidence replaced by something much more fragile—doubt.

Hanna felt her chest tighten. She had spent so much time fighting against Ciara, seeing her as an adversary, that this sudden shift felt almost surreal. Could they truly trust her?

Finally, Ciara sighed, her shoulders sagging as if the weight of the situation had finally caught up with her.

“Okay,” she said, her voice quieter than Hanna had ever heard it. “I’ll help. But only because I want this to stop.”

Relief coursed through Hanna, though she fought to keep her expression composed. “Thank you, Ciara. You’re doing the right thing.”

Ciara’s arms crossed over her chest, her posture stiff, as though trying to shield herself from the vulnerability of her decision. “Don’t make me regret this,” she warned. “Just tell me what you need from me.”

“We need proof,” Emily said, her tone firm and direct. “Something that ties her to the rumors she’s been spreading—or better yet, to the threats against Hanna and Jacob.”

Ciara frowned, her gaze dropping to the floor. Her usually sharp eyes softened, and for a moment, Hanna wondered if guilt had started to creep in. “She’s careful,” Ciara admitted, her voice tinged with hesitation. “She doesn’t leave much of a trail. But… she’s been texting me from a burner number. If I can get her to say something incriminating, will that help?”

Hanna nodded quickly. “Yes. Anything you can get will help.”

Emily leaned forward slightly, her eyes narrowing. “You have to be smart about it. If she gets even a hint that you’re working with us, this could blow up. Are you sure you’re ready for that?”

Ciara’s jaw tightened. “I’ll try,” she said, though doubt lingered in her voice. “But if this blows up in my face…” She trailed off, leaving the unspoken consequences hanging in the air.

“It won’t,” Hanna said firmly, injecting as much conviction into her words as she could muster. “We’ll make sure of it.”

Ciara stared at her for a long moment, as though searching for any hint of deception. Finally, she nodded. “Fine. But if I’m putting myself on the line for you, I’m expecting you to have my back.”

“We will,” Emily said, her voice steady. “We’re in this together now.”

As Ciara walked away, Hanna felt a strange mix of hope and unease settle over her. It was a step in the right direction, but the risks were high—not just for Ciara, but for all of them. Could she trust Ciara to follow through? And if she did, what would they uncover?

That night, Hanna sat cross-legged on her bed, the dim glow of her bedside lamp casting soft shadows across the room. Her phone lay on the comforter beside her, silent and still, yet it felt like a ticking time bomb. Every passing second seemed to amplify the weight of what they were attempting.

She tried to focus on the positives. Ciara agreeing to help was a victory, no matter how small. But the unease in Ciara’s voice echoed in her mind. If this plan backfired, it wouldn’t just be Ciara facing the fallout—it would be all of them.

Her phone buzzed, breaking the silence. She grabbed it instinctively, her pulse quickening.

Finn: How did it go?

Hanna exhaled slowly, her fingers hovering over the screen before typing her response.

Hanna: Ciara agreed to help. She’s going to try to get proof.

The reply came almost instantly.

Finn: That’s good, right?

Hanna hesitated. Was it good? Or was it another gamble in a string of risks that had already pushed her to the edge?

Hanna: Yeah. But it’s risky. If she finds out…

She didn’t need to finish the sentence. The thought alone sent a chill down her spine. If Ciara—the person they were targeting—discovered their plan, it could undo everything.

Finn’s next message came as quickly as the first.

Finn: She won’t. And even if she does, we’ll handle it. You’re not alone in this, Hanna.

Hanna smiled faintly, her fingers brushing against the screen. Finn’s steady support had been her anchor through all of this. When everything else felt like it was falling apart, he was there—a quiet, unwavering presence.

Hanna: Thanks, Finn. I’ll keep you posted.

For a moment, she let herself imagine a world where none of this had happened—a world where she and Finn could laugh about mundane things, where she didn’t have to look over her shoulder or navigate the dangerous waters of high school alliances and betrayals.

Her phone buzzed again.

Finn: Get some rest, okay? You’re stronger than you think.

Hanna set the phone down, her smile lingering despite the storm raging inside her. She leaned back against the pillows, staring up at the ceiling. Finn believed in her, and that was enough to keep her going.

But as the room grew quieter, her doubts crept back in. Could Ciara really get what they needed? Could she be trusted not to betray them? And even if they succeeded, would it truly be enough to end this nightmare?

Hanna closed her eyes, the weight of the day pressing down on her. For now, all she could do was wait—and hope.
