Never Just Friends

Aftermath

Ch. 127 / 300 Mar 01, 2026

The fall festival had come and gone, but the echoes of the confrontation still hung in the air like a storm that had yet to pass. Hanna walked slowly through the quiet courtyard, Finn by her side. The evening air was cool against her skin, a stark contrast to the fire of adrenaline still coursing through her veins. The festival had ended in chaos, but in the end, she had stood her ground—and for the first time, she felt like she had taken back control over her own life. The weight that had been pressing on her shoulders for so long had lifted, even if just a little.

“You handled that perfectly,” Finn said softly, glancing at her with a proud smile. His voice was warm, filled with the kind of reassurance that she’d grown to depend on. “I’ve never seen Ciara look so rattled.”

Hanna smiled faintly, her mind replaying the scene from earlier. She had faced Ciara head-on, and for the first time, the power balance had shifted in her favor. But the victory didn’t feel as sweet as she’d imagined. The adrenaline of the confrontation still buzzed in her limbs, leaving her uneasy and restless. “I couldn’t have done it without you. Without all of you,” she said, her voice quiet but sincere.

Finn squeezed her hand gently. “We’re a team,” he said simply, his smile warm and steady. “That’s what matters.”

As they continued walking, Emily and Jacob caught up with them. Emily’s expression was triumphant, her shoulders squared with the pride of knowing they had won this round. Jacob, on the other hand, looked more subdued. He walked with his hands in his pockets, his gaze focused on the ground ahead. Hanna could tell that while the confrontation had been a victory, it had also taken something out of him.

“You okay?” Hanna asked softly, turning to Jacob as they fell into step together.

Jacob looked up, meeting her gaze, and for a moment, his eyes softened. “I’m fine,” he said, his voice low. “Just… glad it’s over.”

Hanna gave him a small smile, but she could sense the weight behind his words. Even though the immediate threat had been neutralized, there was no denying that the aftermath had left scars on all of them.

“It’s not over,” Emily said firmly, her voice cutting through the quiet tension. “Ciara’s not the type to give up, especially not after a public humiliation like that. She’ll regroup, and she’ll come back even harder.”

Hanna sighed, the heaviness of Emily’s words sinking into her chest. She knew Emily was right—Ciara wasn’t someone who would back down easily. But at least now, people were starting to see who she really was. And that, in itself, was a victory. “I know. But at least now, people are starting to see who she really is,” Hanna said, her voice steady despite the uncertainty lingering in her mind.

Emily’s eyes narrowed with resolve. “Exactly. And we’ll be ready for her next move.”

That night, as the house grew quiet and the world outside slipped into a calm, almost eerie stillness, Hanna lay awake in her bed, staring at the ceiling. The confrontation with Ciara had been a victory—but it didn’t feel like the end. Her mind raced with the possibility of what could come next. Ciara’s parting words had burned themselves into her memory: This isn’t over. The threat lingered like a shadow, an unsaid promise that the battle had only just begun.

The weight of it all pressed down on her chest. Was this really the turning point, or just a temporary reprieve? She closed her eyes, trying to shake off the unsettling feeling that clung to her, but the uncertainty remained.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand, and she reached for it without thinking, relieved by the distraction. As she glanced at the screen, her breath caught. It was a message from Finn.

Finn: Couldn’t sleep without checking on you. Are you okay?

Hanna smiled softly at the simple words, her heart warming at the thought of him thinking of her, even in the quiet moments after everything had happened. She quickly typed back.

Hanna: I’m okay. Just… thinking about everything.

Finn: If you need anything, I’m here. Always.

Hanna’s chest tightened with the sincerity in his message. She set the phone down on the bedside table, feeling a strange mix of comfort and unease. Finn’s constant support had been a lifeline through all of this, and the thought of facing whatever came next with him by her side filled her with more strength than she thought possible.

She closed her eyes, letting his words settle into her heart. Always. It was a promise, unspoken but clear. And for the first time in a long while, Hanna felt like maybe—just maybe—she wasn’t facing this alone.

The uncertainty remained, but for the first time, she felt a flicker of hope amidst it all. Whatever came next, whatever Ciara would throw their way, Hanna knew she wouldn’t be alone in the fight. And that made all the difference.
