Never Just Friends

A Quiet Morning

Ch. 128 / 300 Mar 01, 2026

The next morning, the school halls were alive with an electric buzz. Whispers flowed through the corridors like a steady current, rippling from one group of students to the next. Hanna could feel the weight of their stares as she walked through the halls, but she held her head high, her spine straight and her steps purposeful. She had faced the storm head-on, and though her heart still beat with the residue of adrenaline, she refused to let it show. She wasn’t going to let the attention—or the whispers—shake her.

As she reached her locker, the door creaked open with a familiar sound, and she glanced up to find Emily waiting for her. A grin spread across her friend’s face, her eyes twinkling with that unmistakable gleam of triumph.

“People are talking,” Emily said, her voice bright with excitement. “And for once, they’re on your side.”

Hanna couldn’t help but feel a spark of relief at the words. It was a feeling she hadn’t known in so long—validation, even from those who had once sided with Ciara or kept their distance. But she knew better than to let it sweep her away completely.

“That’s a nice change,” Hanna replied, her tone cautious as she pulled a few books from her locker and tucked them under her arm. “What are they saying?”

“Mostly that you stood up to Ciara and didn’t back down,” Emily said, her grin widening. “And that Talia and Marcus backing you up made her look like a complete fool.”

The words made Hanna smile, a soft laugh escaping her before she could stop it. “It feels good, doesn’t it?” she said, her voice lighter than it had been in a long time. “Knowing the truth is finally coming out. She can’t control the narrative anymore.”

“It does,” Emily agreed, her expression softening as she leaned against the locker beside her. “But don’t let your guard down just yet. Ciara’s probably already plotting her revenge.”

Hanna’s smile faltered slightly, but she forced herself to nod. Emily was right. As much as she wanted to bask in the moment, the reality of Ciara’s manipulative nature wasn’t something she could ignore. Ciara wasn’t one to accept defeat quietly, and the wounds from the festival would only fuel her desire for retaliation.

“I’m not letting my guard down,” Hanna said firmly, her voice low but determined. “But it’s nice to feel like I can breathe for a moment. After everything, it’s a relief just to be able to walk through the halls without feeling like everyone’s watching my every move.” She paused, her eyes searching Emily’s face for confirmation. “It feels like, for once, the weight’s not entirely on me.”

Emily gave a soft smile, her eyes filled with understanding. “You’ve been carrying it for so long, Hanna. It’s okay to take a breath. You’ve earned it.”

The two of them stood in companionable silence for a few moments, the chaos of the school day around them fading into the background. Hanna hadn’t realized just how much she had been holding inside until that very moment. The tension of the past weeks, the uncertainty about the truth being exposed, the constant fear of what Ciara might do next—it was all still there, but for the first time in a long while, it felt like the pressure had been released, even if just a little.

“Just don’t let that guard drop too much, alright?” Emily said after a beat, her voice back to its usual sharpness. “Ciara doesn’t give up that easily. She’s going to be plotting something, and we need to be ready for it.”

“I know,” Hanna replied with a determined nod, her smile fading slightly but her resolve hardening. “But for now, I’m going to take this win. We’ve got time to deal with whatever she throws at us next.”

Emily’s eyes softened, and she gave Hanna a playful nudge. “You deserve this, you know? After everything you’ve been through, you’ve earned the right to enjoy the fact that you’re not the one being dragged through the mud anymore.”

Hanna couldn’t help but smile again, her shoulders relaxing. “Thanks, Em. It means a lot, really.”

As they made their way down the hallway toward class, Hanna allowed herself to feel the smallest shred of peace. She knew the road ahead was still fraught with challenges, but for the first time in what felt like forever, the weight on her shoulders wasn’t unbearable. The truth had come out. She had fought for it, and the world was beginning to see her for who she really was—not as the target of Ciara’s manipulation, but as someone who had stood strong in the face of it.

She wasn’t done yet, but the battle felt a little less lonely.
