The tension in the room was palpable, as thick as the humid air before a summer storm. Sebastian Anderson stood by the window, his broad shoulders rigid with disbelief and anger. The afternoon sun cast long shadows across his face, highlighting the deep lines of worry etched into his skin. He shook his head, muttering under his breath.
"I don't believe it," Sebastian repeated, his voice barely above a whisper. "I don't believe you."
Across the table, James shot a nervous glance at Alex, the Greystone Alpha. He projected his thoughts with trepidation: 'Alpha, what do you think we should do?'
Alex gave James a sideways glance before turning his attention back to Sebastian. "I assure you," Alex stated emphatically, "this is not a lie."
Sebastian's reaction was immediate and explosive. He slammed his fist against the table, making the surface tremble. "DO YOU EXPECT ME TO BELIEVE THAT MY—MY DAUGHTER—" His voice cracked with fury, and he couldn't finish his sentence. In a sudden, furious movement, he grabbed Alex by the collar and pulled him close, glaring into his eyes. "My daughter is not having any problems. Do not drag her into your grudge and the mess that you have made for yourself."
Alex's eyes blazed with anger, his wolf fighting to break free. "Take your hands off me, Sebastian," he growled, his voice low and menacing.
The room erupted into chaos as their betas rushed to separate them, preventing what could have been a violent confrontation. It took the combined efforts of several wolves to pull the two alphas apart.
"We have no intention of causing trouble," Alex said, smoothing down the collar of his shirt. His voice was strained, but he maintained his composure.
"You tell lies, Alex," Sebastian snarled, his eyes filled with accusation. "This is beneath you."
"And why would I lie about something like this? What benefit would I gain from this deception?"
Alex's frustration was evident. "Chris is trying to draw the packs into a war. Doesn't this worry you?"
Sebastian let out a growl of frustration, collapsing back into his chair. He clasped his hands over his handsome face, his shoulders slumping with the weight of the news. "What did you hear about my daughter?" he asked quietly, his voice barely above a whisper.
Alex sighed, his expression softening with regret. "There are rumours that he forced himself on her and that he is exploiting omegas," he said, sitting down next to Sebastian.
"Chris is angry that he wasn't able to get my mate to become his mistress. We're partly to blame for your daughter's pain, but that's not why we came here. We need to be careful."
"I am aware of the drama that happened after Grace and Chris's mating." Sebastian nodded, his eyes filled with a mix of sadness and anger. I confronted him about it and apologised for his behaviour, saying it was just driven by passion. He promised that he would treat Grace with the utmost respect and care from now on."
Sebastian's eyes were locked on Alex. "Are you saying he lied ?"
"Yes, he lied." Alex confirmed.
Sebastian's jaw clenched as he processed the information. "I can't believe he would do that to Grace," he muttered under his breath.
"What do you want from me?" Sebastian asked.
"We've come to propose an alliance," Alex continued. "An assurance that if Chris goes ahead with his plans, we won't be forced into a war with the packs. We suffered tremendous losses during the previous war. I'm sure you understand what I'm talking about."
Sebastian stood abruptly, turning to face the window once more. His voice was a mix of sorrow and resolve. "I do not want my son's sacrifice to be in vain," he said, looking out at the horizon.
"You have my word, Alex," he added softly. "I'm sorry, but I have to leave you now. I have to get my daughter back. My poor daughter, I should have known better than to ask the Council for her mating."
Alex quickly moved to stop him. "This isn't the right time to rescue her," he said urgently. "She is still bonded to him. Don't forget that."
"THEN I WILL BREAK HIS NECK," Sebastian roared, his fury igniting once more.
"That won't do any good, sir," Alex said firmly, gripping Sebastian's arm. "We need to keep this matter a secret. We can't let Chris know that we know about his plans. I believe he will make a move during the moon feast. Have some patience until then, Sebastian."
Sebastian grumbled, his face a mask of reluctant acceptance. "I suppose you're going to the council after this?" he asked, his voice calmer but still tinged with anger.
Alex nodded. "Yes, I plan to."
"Are you going to meet Alpha Jackson?" Sebastian inquired.
"Yes, is there a problem?" Alex asked, curious.
"He won't have the patience to hear you out once you say that Chris is planning a war to get your mate," Sebastian explained. "Jackson's pack suffered the most during the last war. He won't let you leave his land alive."
"What do you suggest we do, then?" Alex folded his arms across his broad chest, his gaze fixed on Sebastian.
Sebastian sighed deeply. "He trusts me. I’ll tell him about it and make him promise to keep it a secret until Chris launches his attack on your pack."
"Thank you, Sebastian," Alex expressed his gratitude, a genuine warmth in his voice. The tension in the room had dissipated. James, who had been silently observing the exchange, felt a wave of relief. There had already been too much bloodshed. Chris had to be stopped before more packs were drawn into conflict.
"This is the least I can do for our pact," Sebastian said, a hint of weariness in his voice. "There's no need to thank me. Now, let's hear your plan to outwit that mutt."
Alex nodded, taking a deep breath. "First, all packs need to agree that they won't take Chris's side if he calls for war. Then the council would have to talk to Alpha Chris and try to put some sense into him. I believe he can still be redeemed. Whatever happened in the past, we must bury it and move on. You wouldn't want to see your daughter lose her mate, would you?"
"He doesn't deserve to be her mate," Sebastian roared, his eyes flashing with anger. "I respected his father, Alpha Sullivan, which is why I proposed Grace's mating with Chris. Had I known he was such a despicable person, I would never have agreed to this arrangement."
Alex looked down, his voice heavy with regret. "My mate Rosalie and Chris were true mates."
Sebastian gasped, his eyes widening in shock. "What? Why didn’t he say so?"
"Perhaps he didn’t want to lose your and the council's favour. Maybe he preferred a strong connection and business gains over true mates. He betrayed his mate. And now, by wanting her back, he is betraying your daughter, Grace."
"That is why I need to break his neck!" Sebastian roared again, his eyes glowing gold with anger.
"Maybe we can clear up this mess without breaking anyone's neck," Alex suggested, trying to calm him. "Let's hope for the best."
Sebastian took a deep breath, his anger subsiding slightly. "Very well," he said, his voice steadying. "But know this, Alex. If Chris harms my daughter any further, I will not rest until he pays for it."
"Understood," Alex replied solemnly. "We will do everything in our power to protect her and prevent this war. But we need to be smart about it. We need to work together."
The two alphas stood in silence for a moment, the gravity of their situation weighing heavily on them. Despite their differences, they shared a common goal: to protect their loved ones and prevent further bloodshed. The path ahead would be challenging, but together, they stood a chance.
As they parted ways, the tension that had filled the room lingered in the air, a reminder of the fragile peace they were striving to maintain. Both men knew that the coming days would test their resolve and their alliances. But for now, they had taken the first step towards a potential resolution, and that, at least, was a start.
