Love by the Contract

Chapter 90

Ch. 90 / 200 Apr 25, 2026

The hospital room was eerily quiet, save for the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor and the soft rustling of nurses outside the door. Emma sat in the chair beside Thomas’s bed, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. The pale morning light filtered through the window blinds, casting soft shadows across the room. She had spent the night there, unwilling to leave his side. Her eyes burned with exhaustion, but her heart was too restless to let her sleep.

Looking at Thomas now—his face pale, a faint bruise blooming along his jaw—Emma felt an overwhelming wave of emotion. His usually strong and steady presence was diminished, replaced by fragility. She had always known Thomas to be a rock, someone who never faltered, never wavered in his support for her. Seeing him like this made her realize just how much she had leaned on him, how integral he had become to her life.

The day passed in a blur of routine hospital sounds and periodic updates from the doctors. Thomas’s condition was stable but fragile. Emma alternated between sitting at his bedside and pacing the small room, her mind racing. The decision she thought she had made so confidently was unraveling before her eyes. Reuniting with Alex had felt like the right thing to do—for the twins, for the semblance of a family she had always wanted to rebuild. But now, the thought of leaving Thomas felt like an impossibility.

She remembered the moments they had shared: his quiet words of encouragement, the way he had always been there without asking for anything in return. Thomas had given her a sense of stability she hadn’t realized she needed until now. And yet, Alex’s presence loomed in her mind—a reminder of the life they had built together, the memories they had shared, and the undeniable connection they still had.

The door opened softly, and Callum stepped in, holding two cups of coffee. His presence was a welcome distraction.

“You look like you could use this,” he said, handing her one of the cups.

Emma gave him a weak smile. “Thanks. I don’t think I’ve slept in over 24 hours.”

Callum sat in the chair across from her, his gaze flickering to Thomas. “He’s a fighter. You know that, right?”

Emma nodded, her throat tightening. “I just… I don’t know what I’d do if I lost him, Callum.”

“You won’t lose him,” Callum said firmly. “But I think you need to ask yourself why the thought scares you so much.”

Emma blinked at him, caught off guard by the question. “What do you mean?”

“I mean,” Callum said gently, “you’ve been torn between Alex and Thomas for a while now. Maybe it’s time to really figure out what you want. Not for the twins, not for anyone else. For you.”

As the hours dragged on, Emma found herself lost in thought. Memories of Alex and Thomas wove through her mind, each one a testament to the different kinds of love they represented. Alex was her past, the father of her children, the man who had once been her everything. But that love had been tested, fractured by betrayal and hardship. Thomas was her present, a steady hand guiding her through the storm, someone who saw her as she was and accepted her unconditionally.

The afternoon light shifted, casting the room in a golden glow. Emma stood and leaned over Thomas, brushing a stray lock of hair from his forehead. His skin was warm beneath her touch, a reassuring sign of life. As if sensing her presence, his eyes fluttered open.

“Emma?” His voice was hoarse, barely above a whisper.

Tears filled her eyes as she smiled down at him. “Hey, you’re awake.”

He tried to sit up, wincing as pain flared through his body. “What happened?”

“You were in an accident,” Emma said, her voice steady despite the lump in her throat. “A truck ran a red light. You’ve been out for almost two days.”

Thomas closed his eyes briefly, exhaling a shaky breath. “Guess I’m not as indestructible as I thought.”

A small laugh escaped her, though it was tinged with relief. “No, you’re not. But you’re here, and that’s what matters.”

As the evening wore on, Thomas regained more of his strength. The doctors came and went, checking his vitals and ensuring his condition was improving. Emma stayed close, her heart torn between relief and the growing realization that she couldn’t keep running from her feelings.

When the last nurse left the room, Thomas turned to her, his expression serious. “Emma, can we talk?”

She nodded, pulling her chair closer to his bed. “Of course.”

He took a deep breath, his hand reaching for hers. “I’ve been thinking about us. About everything we’ve been through together.”

Emma’s heart skipped a beat. “Thomas—”

“Let me finish,” he interrupted gently. “I know you’ve been torn between me and Alex. And I get it—he’s the father of your kids. You have a history with him that I can’t compete with. But Emma, I need you to know something.”

She held her breath as he continued, his voice steady despite the vulnerability in his eyes.

“I love you,” he said simply. “And I believe that what we have is real. I’ve seen you at your lowest, and I’ve been there to help you pick up the pieces. I’ve watched you fight for your family, for your foundation, for yourself. And through all of it, I’ve fallen for you.”

Emma’s throat tightened, her emotions threatening to overwhelm her. “Thomas, I—”

He squeezed her hand, cutting her off. “I’m not saying this to pressure you. I just… I need you to know how I feel. And I need to know if there’s a chance for us. A real chance.”

Tears welled in her eyes as she looked at him, her heart aching with the weight of his words. She wanted to tell him how much he meant to her, how much she valued his support, his kindness, his love. But the shadow of Alex loomed in the back of her mind, a constant reminder of the life she had been trying to rebuild.

“I don’t know what to say,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

Thomas’s expression softened, but there was a flicker of disappointment in his eyes. “I just want you to be happy, Emma. But I need you to choose. For yourself, for the twins. You can’t keep living in this in-between.”

The ride home that night was filled with silence, the weight of Thomas’s words pressing down on Emma like a physical force. She parked in her driveway and sat in the car for a long moment, staring at the house in front of her. The twins were inside, sleeping peacefully, oblivious to the storm raging in their mother’s heart.

As she stepped inside, the house felt too quiet. The usual chaos of toys scattered across the floor and the hum of daily life seemed muted, replaced by a stillness that mirrored her own internal turmoil. She checked on the twins, their soft breathing bringing a small measure of comfort. They were her anchors, the reason she fought so hard to keep going.

But as she stood in the doorway of their room, she couldn’t ignore the crossroads she now faced. Thomas’s words echoed in her mind, a plea for honesty, for clarity, for a decision.

Emma returned to her bedroom and sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the framed photo on her nightstand. It was a picture of her and Alex, taken years ago during a family vacation. They were smiling, their arms wrapped around each other, the twins nestled between them. It was a moment of happiness, a reminder of what they had once shared.

But as she picked up the frame, another memory surfaced—one of Thomas standing beside her during the foundation’s toughest days, his unwavering support carrying her through the darkest moments. Both men represented different paths, different versions of her future.
