Love by the Contract

Chapter 103

Ch. 103 / 200 Apr 25, 2026

Back in the quiet of their headquarters, the scandal that had erupted in Paris loomed like a dark cloud over Emma's foundation. Despite the chilly autumn air outside, the atmosphere inside the office was heated, buzzing with the urgency of damage control. Thomas and Emma sat surrounded by their core team, poring over every press release and public statement they had issued in the past 24 hours.

"We need to be clear that our discussions with Dr. Chevalier were preliminary and that at no point did we implement any of his research methods," Emma stated firmly, her eyes scanning the room, making sure every team member understood the gravity of the situation.

Thomas nodded in agreement, his focus shifting between the legal documents and the latest updates from their PR team. "Let’s emphasize our commitment to ethical standards. We need to reassure our partners and donors that our due diligence processes are robust and that we take any allegations of misconduct seriously."

The team worked through the night, drafting communications and fielding calls from concerned stakeholders. Emma's phone was a constant source of alerts, each new message pulling her deeper into the whirlwind of crisis management.

As dawn broke, bringing a sliver of light into the dimly lit room, Emma finally stepped away from the conference table, her body weary but her mind racing. She needed a moment to gather her thoughts, away from the chaos that the scandal had wrought.

Standing by the window, Emma watched the city come to life, the early risers making their way through the streets below. The weight of leadership had never felt so heavy, and yet, she knew that navigating through this storm was crucial not just for her foundation's survival but for the children and families depending on their support.

The sound of the door creaking open pulled her from her reverie. Thomas stepped beside her, handing her a fresh cup of coffee. "How are you holding up?" he asked, concern evident in his voice.

Emma took a sip, the warmth of the coffee offering a small comfort. "I'm okay," she replied, though her tired eyes said otherwise. "Just worried about the long-term impact this could have on our work."

"We’ll get through this, Emma," Thomas reassured her, his hand lightly touching her arm. "You’ve built something incredible here, and one scandal won’t tear it down. We’ll make sure of that."

Just then, Emma’s phone buzzed with an incoming email. Expecting another update from her PR team, she was startled to see an anonymous sender. Frowning, she opened the message, her eyes quickly scanning the contents. What she read made her heart sink.

"Emma, you need to see this," she said, turning the phone to Thomas.

The message was brief but ominous, hinting that the leak which had exacerbated the scandal might have come from someone within her own team. Attached were documents that had been shared confidentially during their vetting of Dr. Chevalier—documents that only senior team members had access to.

A cold wave of betrayal washed over Emma as she realized the implications. If the tip was accurate, it meant that the breach was not just a lapse in judgment or a mistake—it was deliberate.

"Can we trace the source of this email?" Emma asked, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her.

Thomas took the phone, his brows furrowing as he examined the email’s details. "I’ll get our IT team on it right away. We need to confirm if these claims are true."

As they waited for the IT team to gather information, Emma and Thomas returned to the crisis management session, their minds burdened by this new development. The room was filled with their most trusted advisors and staff, all working diligently to navigate the foundation through one of its toughest challenges yet.

Halfway through their discussion on the next steps for public engagement, Emma’s phone rang. It was their head of IT, his voice urgent.

"Emma, we’ve traced the email. It’s not good news," he reported, his tone grave.

"Tell me," Emma urged, bracing herself.

"It came from inside the foundation. The IP address matches one of our own devices," he explained. "We’re still trying to pinpoint exactly whose device it is, but it’s definitely internal."

A heavy silence fell over the room as the team absorbed the news. Betrayal within their ranks was a scenario for which no one had truly prepared. Emma felt a deep sense of disappointment and anger, but she knew that allowing those feelings to overwhelm her would not solve anything.

"We need to handle this delicately but swiftly," she told the team. "Let’s identify the individual responsible and understand their motives. But let’s keep this contained. The last thing we need is for this to spill over and cause more damage."

The team nodded, the resolve clear in their eyes. They would support Emma, doing whatever it took to protect the foundation’s integrity.

As the meeting adjourned, and the team members dispersed to carry out their assigned tasks, Emma remained seated, Thomas beside her. The early morning optimism had been replaced by a somber reality.

"We’ll find out who did this," Thomas assured her, his voice firm.
