Love by the Contract

Chapter 91

Ch. 91 / 200 Apr 25, 2026

The late morning sun streamed through the hospital window, casting a soft glow over the sterile white room. Emma stepped inside quietly, her heels clicking faintly against the polished floor. Thomas looked up from his bed, a faint smile breaking across his face as their eyes met. He looked better than the last time she had seen him, though the bruising on his face and the way he gingerly adjusted himself on the bed reminded her of the fragility of his condition.

“You’re back,” Thomas said, his voice warm but still tinged with fatigue.

“I wanted to check on you,” Emma replied, placing a small bag of food and magazines on the side table. “And maybe force some decent food on you. Hospital pudding can only do so much.”

Thomas chuckled softly, his laughter quickly turning into a wince. “You know, I’m starting to think you’re the reason I’m still in one piece.”

Emma smirked, though her heart clenched at his vulnerability. “Someone has to make sure you take care of yourself.”

As she settled into the chair beside him, Thomas studied her face, his expression growing serious. “You’ve been busy. Running the foundation, handling the fallout from… everything. How are you holding up?”

Emma sighed, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face. “Honestly? I feel like I’m constantly juggling, and I’m not sure how much longer I can keep all the balls in the air. Between the foundation, the twins, and…” Her voice faltered, her gaze dropping to her lap.

“And us,” Thomas finished for her, his tone gentle but resolute. “Emma, I know I complicated things with what I said the other night.”

She looked up at him, her throat tightening. “Thomas, everything is already so complicated. I don’t even know where to begin sorting through it all.”

He reached for her hand, his touch warm and grounding. “Then let’s start here. With me.”

Emma’s heart raced as Thomas’s words hung between them. His eyes searched hers, filled with an openness that left her feeling both exposed and comforted.

“Emma, I need you to know something,” he began, his voice steady despite the weight of his words. “I’ve spent so much of my life being the guy who fixes things for everyone else. But with you… it’s different. I don’t want to just fix things for you. I want to be with you. I want us to build something together.”

Tears welled in her eyes as she listened, her chest tightening with emotion. “Thomas, I…”

“Let me finish,” he interrupted gently, his hand tightening around hers. “I’ve watched you fight for your family, for your foundation, for yourself. You’re the strongest person I know. And somewhere along the way, I fell for you. Not just for who you are, but for the way you make me want to be better.”

Emma’s tears spilled over, her emotions a tangled web of gratitude, fear, and confusion. “Thomas, I care about you so much. You’ve been my rock when everything else felt like it was falling apart. But…”

“But there’s Alex,” Thomas finished, his tone resigned but understanding. “I get it. He’s the father of your children. You have a history, a bond that I can’t compete with. And if you choose him, I’ll respect that. I just… I needed you to know how I feel.”

Emma couldn’t speak, her throat too tight with emotion. Instead, she leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss to his forehead. It was a gesture of gratitude, of affection, and of the deep connection they shared. “Thank you,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “For being honest. For always being there.”

Thomas smiled faintly, though there was a flicker of sadness in his eyes. “You deserve honesty, Emma. And you deserve happiness. Whatever that looks like.”

The ride home from the hospital was a blur of emotions. Emma gripped the steering wheel tightly, her mind racing with Thomas’s confession. She cared about him deeply—there was no denying that. But Alex was still a significant part of her life, and their shared history weighed heavily on her heart.

As she pulled into the driveway, her phone buzzed in the passenger seat. She glanced at the screen and saw the nanny’s name flashing. A small pang of worry crept into her chest as she answered.

“Hello?”

“Emma,” the nanny’s voice came through, laced with concern. “I thought I should let you know—Alex came by a little while ago and took the twins.”

Emma’s stomach dropped. “What do you mean he took them? Did he say where he was going?”

The nanny hesitated. “He said it was an emergency. He seemed rushed, but… he didn’t give me any details.”

Panic gripped Emma as a thousand scenarios ran through her mind. “Did he mention when he’d be back? Did he leave a note?”

“No, nothing,” the nanny replied, her voice apologetic. “I thought he would’ve told you.”

Emma’s chest tightened, and her hands trembled as she gripped the phone. “Thank you for letting me know. I’ll handle it.”

She ended the call and immediately dialed Alex’s number. It rang twice before going to voicemail. Frustrated, she tried again, her worry mounting with each unanswered call. By the third attempt, her mind was racing with worst-case scenarios.

Emma paced the living room, her phone clutched tightly in her hand. The twins were everything to her, and the thought of not knowing where they were—or why Alex had taken them—was unbearable. She dialed Alex’s number one more time, and this time, he picked up.

“Emma,” his voice came through, calm but firm.

“Alex, where are you?” she demanded, her voice shaking with anger and fear. “Why did you take the twins without telling me?”

“I didn’t have time to explain,” he said quickly. “There was an issue at the pediatrician’s office. They needed to run some urgent tests, and I didn’t want to waste a second.”

Emma’s heart raced, her fear giving way to a mixture of relief and anger. “You still could’ve called me, Alex. I’m their mother—I have a right to know what’s happening.”

“I know,” he admitted, his tone softening. “I’m sorry. I panicked. I thought I was doing the right thing.”

“Where are you now?” she asked, her voice still tight.

“We’re on our way home,” Alex replied. “The tests came back normal. It was just a precaution.”

Emma exhaled deeply, her emotions catching up to her. Relief flooded her, but the anger and hurt lingered. “You can’t just make decisions like this without including me, Alex. We’re supposed to be a team.”

“I know,” he said again, his voice filled with regret. “It won’t happen again, Emma. I promise.”

By the time Alex arrived with the twins, Emma’s initial anger had simmered into a quiet determination. She met him at the door, her arms crossing over her chest as he carried the twins inside. They looked perfectly content, oblivious to the tension between their parents.

“I’m sorry,” Alex said again as he set the twins down in their play area. “I should’ve called you.”

“Yes, you should have,” Emma replied, her tone firm. “This isn’t just about today, Alex. It’s about trust. If we’re going to make this co-parenting thing work, you need to include me in these decisions.”

Alex nodded, his expression earnest. “You’re right. I’ll do better, Emma. I swear.”

For a moment, the room was quiet, the weight of their shared responsibilities settling over them. Emma watched the twins as they played, their laughter filling the space with a warmth that momentarily eased the tension.

But in the back of her mind, Thomas’s confession lingered. Her heart was a battlefield, torn between two men who had both shaped her life in profound ways. And as she looked at Alex, she couldn’t shake the feeling that the decision she had been avoiding was fast approaching.
