Love by the Contract

Chapter 116

Ch. 116 / 200 Apr 25, 2026

In the deepening twilight, Emma and Thomas drove through the rain-drenched streets, their eyes scanning each shadowy corner and alley. The urgency of finding the whistleblower, Dr. Adrian Clark, gnawed at Emma’s nerves. His last cryptic message had indicated he was going into hiding, fearful for his life after his identity was likely exposed to his former employer, BioGen Solutions.

“Do you think he reached out to anyone else with the information?” Thomas asked, his voice tense as he navigated through another sharp turn.

Emma shook her head, her gaze fixed on the passenger-side mirror. “I don’t think so. He trusted us because of our foundation’s reputation. We’re his best shot at making this public without getting immediately silenced.”

Their first stop was an old, nearly abandoned industrial park where Adrian had mentioned storing backup evidence. As they approached, the headlights illuminated the decrepit facade of a warehouse. They parked and quickly made their way inside, their steps echoing ominously through the vast, empty space.

Inside, they found evidence of recent activity—an open safe, discarded papers, a flash drive left on a makeshift desk. Emma picked up the drive, a glimmer of hope rising amidst the anxiety. “Looks like Adrian was preparing to move everything,” she said, turning the small device over in her hand.

“But where to?” Thomas wondered aloud, scanning the chaotic sprawl of papers for any clue.

Emma noticed a map pinned to the wall, several locations marked in what looked like a frantic, last-minute effort. One of the marks was on a small cabin in the woods near the city, a place she recalled Adrian mentioning once as a childhood retreat.

“Let’s check this out,” she suggested, pointing to the marked cabin.

With no time to lose, they hurried back to their vehicle and headed toward the location. The drive was tense, each mile bringing them closer to what they hoped would be their missing whistleblower—or at least some answers.

The cabin was hidden by dense forest, isolated and dark as they arrived. With only their flashlights to guide them, Emma and Thomas approached cautiously, aware that if Adrian was hiding, he was likely scared and potentially dangerous.

“Dr. Clark, it’s Emma Stone and Thomas Hewitt! We’re here to help!” Emma called out as they reached the door, her voice firm yet reassuring.

No answer came, and with a shared look, they pushed the door open. Inside, they found Adrian slumped against the wall, pale and visibly injured, a makeshift bandage around his arm.

“Adrian!” Emma rushed to his side, checking his wounds. “What happened?”

“They found me... I managed to escape, but not before they...” Adrian’s voice trailed off, his breath shallow and pained.

Thomas quickly called for medical help on his phone while Emma tried to comfort Adrian, assessing his injuries more thoroughly. “Hang in there, we’re getting you out of here,” she assured him, her mind racing with the implications of his condition.

Adrian managed a weak nod, his eyes flickering with a mix of fear and relief. “I hid the most critical evidence, the synthesized data results, in a safety deposit box. Only you two have access now,” he murmured, handing Emma a key from his pocket.

As they waited for the emergency services to arrive, Emma pondered the gravity of the situation. Adrian’s testimony was crucial, but his critical condition now put their entire case in jeopardy.

The sound of sirens finally broke through the eerie silence of the woods, and soon, paramedics were taking over, providing the urgent care Adrian needed. As he was stretchered to the ambulance, his eyes met Emma’s, a silent message passing between them—a plea for her to finish what he had started.

Watching the ambulance disappear into the night, Emma felt the weight of responsibility settle on her shoulders. Turning to Thomas, she saw her own determination mirrored in his expression.

“We need to secure that evidence and prepare for what’s coming. BioGen won’t stop at this,” Emma said, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her.

Thomas nodded, his resolve firm. “Let’s do it. For Adrian, and for all the patients who are counting on us.”

As they drove back to the city, Emma couldn’t shake the feeling of impending challenge that lay ahead. The whistleblower’s condition, now hanging by a thread, had shifted their strategy, but not their commitment. They were in this fight to the end, no matter what it took.

The race against time had just become a battle for justice, and Emma was ready to lead the charge.
