Love by the Contract

Chapter 95

Ch. 95 / 200 Apr 25, 2026

The airport hummed with the sound of bustling travelers and rolling suitcases, a backdrop that seemed incongruent with the heaviness in Emma’s chest. She walked through the crowded terminal, her footsteps slow and hesitant as she approached the gate where Thomas was waiting. The fluorescent lights overhead felt harsh, amplifying the intensity of the moment.

Thomas sat by the window, staring out at the runway where planes taxied in the distance. His duffel bag rested at his feet, and he looked every bit the man ready to leave, though the tightness in his shoulders betrayed his internal struggle. Emma hesitated for a moment, gathering her thoughts before stepping closer.

“Thomas,” she said softly.

He turned at the sound of her voice, his expression shifting from surprise to something softer—something that hurt more than anger ever could. He stood, his tall frame towering over her, and for a moment, they simply looked at each other, the weight of unspoken words hanging heavily between them.

“You came,” Thomas said, his voice low and steady, though his eyes betrayed a flicker of hope.

Emma nodded, her throat tight. “I couldn’t let you leave without saying goodbye.”

They moved to a quieter corner of the terminal, away from the sea of travelers rushing to their destinations. Thomas gestured toward a pair of seats, and they sat down, the silence between them feeling louder than any words.

“I wasn’t sure you’d come,” he admitted after a long pause. “I thought maybe it would be easier for you if I just… disappeared.”

Emma’s chest ached at the thought. “Easier? How could you think that?” she asked, her voice trembling. “You’ve been such a big part of my life, Thomas. I can’t imagine just pretending you were never there.”

He smiled faintly, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “I didn’t mean it like that. I just… I know how hard this has been for you. And I don’t want to make it harder. Leaving feels like the only way to give you the space you need to figure out what you want.”

Emma looked down at her hands, her fingers twisting nervously. “And what if what I want is for you to stay?”

Thomas leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees as he studied her. “Emma, I love you. You know that. But I can’t stay here in limbo, waiting for you to decide between me and Alex. It’s not fair to any of us—not to me, not to him, and definitely not to you.”

Emma felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. “I know it’s not fair,” she said, her voice cracking. “I hate that I’ve put you in this position. I hate that I can’t give you the answer you deserve.”

Thomas reached over, covering her hands with his. His touch was warm, grounding. “I’m not angry with you, Emma. And I don’t regret anything—not meeting you, not being there for you, not falling in love with you. But I think we both know that right now, you need clarity. And the only way you’ll get that is if I’m not here, complicating things.”

His words felt like a knife to her heart, but she couldn’t argue with them. As much as she wanted to ask him to stay, she knew he was right. His presence, as comforting as it was, made it impossible for her to untangle her feelings for him and Alex.

“I just… I don’t want to lose you,” Emma whispered, her voice barely audible.

Thomas squeezed her hands gently. “You’re not losing me,” he said. “I’m just giving you the space to figure out what you really want. And if that ends up being me, you know where to find me.”

Emma swallowed hard, her emotions threatening to overwhelm her. “Where will you go?”

He shrugged, a bittersweet smile playing at his lips. “Somewhere new. Somewhere I can start fresh. Maybe a small town, maybe another city. I haven’t figured it out yet, but I’ll be okay.”

The thought of Thomas leaving, of him building a life without her in it, made Emma’s chest ache. But she knew she couldn’t ask him to stay just because she was afraid of letting go.

The boarding announcement echoed through the terminal, breaking the fragile bubble they’d created around themselves. Thomas stood, slinging his bag over his shoulder. Emma rose too, her legs feeling unsteady beneath her.

“This is it,” he said, his voice soft but steady.

Emma nodded, her throat too tight to speak. She stepped closer, wrapping her arms around him in a hug that felt both final and fragile. Thomas held her tightly, his chin resting on the top of her head.

“Take care of yourself, Emma,” he murmured. “And take care of those babies. They’re lucky to have a mom like you.”

Emma pulled back slightly, looking up at him with tear-filled eyes. “And you take care of yourself, too,” she said. “Promise me you’ll be okay.”

He smiled, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “I will. And so will you.”

As Thomas turned and walked toward the boarding gate, Emma felt a surge of panic. She wanted to call out to him, to tell him to stay, to tell him that she loved him and couldn’t imagine her life without him. But the words caught in her throat, weighed down by the uncertainty that still clouded her heart.

She stood there, watching as he handed over his ticket and disappeared down the jet bridge. Her heart felt like it was breaking, but she stayed rooted in place, her hands clenched into fists at her sides.

When the final boarding announcement echoed through the terminal, Emma felt a single tear slip down her cheek. She wiped it away quickly, turning to leave before the plane took off. She couldn’t bear to watch it disappear into the sky.

Back in her car, Emma sat in the driver’s seat, staring at the steering wheel as her emotions threatened to overwhelm her. She felt torn apart, caught between the man who had been her partner for so many years and the man who had shown her a kind of love she hadn’t known she was capable of feeling.

Her phone buzzed in the cupholder, pulling her out of her thoughts. It was a message from Alex:

“The twins are asking for you. Come home when you’re ready.”

Emma sighed, her fingers tightening around the phone. She knew she had to go back, to face Alex and the twins, to figure out what came next. But for now, she allowed herself one more moment to grieve the goodbye she hadn’t been ready to say.
