Love by the Contract

Chapter 80

Ch. 80 / 200 Apr 25, 2026

The late morning sun streamed through the hospital room’s wide windows, casting long shadows across the floor. Emma sat stiffly in her bed, her hands clenched into fists against the crisp sheets. Her heart raced as the events of the previous evening replayed in her mind—Thomas’s confession, his anguished expression, and the shattering realization that he had kept something so monumental from her.

The quiet knock at the door startled her. She already knew who it would be.

“Come in,” she said, her voice calm but tinged with tension.

Thomas stepped into the room, his posture hesitant. He carried his usual air of confidence, but today it was tempered with a vulnerability Emma hadn’t seen before. He paused a few steps from the bed, as though unsure if he was welcome.

“Emma,” he began softly, “I know you’re upset. I—”

“Upset?” Emma cut him off, her voice rising. “Upset doesn’t even begin to cover it, Thomas. How could you keep something like this from me? After everything we’ve been through, after everything you’ve seen me go through—you didn’t trust me enough to tell me the truth?”

Thomas winced, running a hand through his hair. “I didn’t know how to tell you,” he admitted. “I was afraid it would change the way you saw me.”

Emma shook her head, the betrayal heavy in her chest. “Do you have any idea how much I’ve relied on you? Trusted you? And now, to find out you’ve been hiding something so significant, something that could affect the foundation, my reputation—everything?”

“I know,” Thomas said, stepping closer. “I know I should’ve told you. But I swear to you, Emma, I’ve spent years making up for those mistakes. What happened back then doesn’t define who I am now. I’ve worked hard to rebuild my life, to become someone you could depend on.”

Emma’s jaw tightened. “But you didn’t give me the chance to decide for myself, did you? You made that choice for me. And now Victor Harlow is using it against us.”

Thomas’s eyes softened, his voice dropping. “You’re right. I messed up. I should’ve told you from the beginning. But please, Emma, don’t let my past mistakes ruin what we’ve built together. I care about you more than I can say, and I would do anything to make this right.”

Emma felt a lump rise in her throat. She wanted to believe him, and wanted to forgive him. But the sting of his betrayal was too fresh, the weight of his secret too heavy to ignore.

“I need time,” she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. “Time to think, to figure out how I feel about all of this.”

Thomas nodded, his expression pained but understanding. “I’ll give you all the time you need,” he said. “But please, don’t shut me out completely. I’ll be here when you’re ready.”

The hours dragged on after Thomas left, the silence of the hospital room pressing down on Emma like a heavy blanket. Her thoughts spiraled, shifting between her anger at Thomas, her lingering feelings for Alex, and the overwhelming need to protect her twins from the chaos that seemed to follow her everywhere.

By mid-afternoon, Alex arrived, his usual confident demeanor subdued. He carried a small bouquet of lilies—her favorite—and set them on the table beside her bed.

“How are you feeling?” he asked, his voice gentle.

Emma sighed. “Physically? Better. Mentally? That’s another story.”

Alex pulled a chair closer, sitting down with a seriousness that made her uneasy. “I heard Thomas came by earlier.”

Emma frowned. “You were here?”

“I was dropping off some paperwork for the twins’ pediatrician,” Alex explained. “I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but... I overheard your conversation.”

Emma’s heart sank. She had no idea how much he had heard, but the intensity in his gaze told her it was enough.

“Alex, I—”

He held up a hand, cutting her off. “I’m not here to talk about Thomas. I’m here to talk about us. About the twins. About everything.”

Emma sat up straighter, bracing herself. “Okay. What do you want to say?”

Alex leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees. “Emma, I’ve been thinking a lot about the custody battle. About what it’s doing to us, and what it could do to the twins. And I’ve come to a decision.”

Her chest tightened. “What kind of decision?”

“I’m dropping the case,” Alex said, his voice steady but tinged with emotion. “I don’t want to fight you anymore. It’s not what’s best for the twins, and it’s not what’s best for us.”

Emma blinked, caught off guard. “You’re dropping it? Just like that?”

“Not just like that,” Alex said. “It wasn’t an easy decision. But I’ve realized that this constant battle isn’t helping anyone. We need to find a way to co-parent without tearing each other apart.”

Relief and disbelief washed over her in equal measure. “Alex, I... I don’t know what to say.”

“You don’t have to say anything,” he said. “I just want you to know that I’m here. For you, for the twins. Whatever it takes, I’ll be there.”

The following morning, Emma found herself reflecting on Alex’s words. His decision to drop the custody case was unexpected, but it spoke volumes about his priorities. For the first time in weeks, she felt a glimmer of hope that they could find a way forward—together, but not necessarily as a couple.

Later that day, Thomas returned, his expression cautious but hopeful. He carried a folder under one arm, setting it on the table as he took a seat.

“I know you said you need time,” he began, “but I wanted to show you this.”

Emma hesitated, then opened the folder. Inside were detailed plans for a new initiative within the foundation—a program aimed at providing legal support for families navigating medical disputes. As she skimmed the documents, she felt a pang of admiration for Thomas’s dedication.

“This is incredible,” she said softly. “You’ve thought of everything.”

Thomas smiled, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “I wanted to prove to you that I’m all in. That I’m not just here for the easy moments, but for the hard ones too.”

Emma closed the folder, meeting his gaze. “Thomas, I appreciate everything you’ve done for me. For the foundation. But this... this isn’t just about the work. It’s about trust.”

“I know,” he said, his voice earnest. “And I’m willing to do whatever it takes to earn back your trust. Just tell me how.”

Emma sighed, her emotions warring within her. She cared about Thomas deeply. But could she move past his deception? And what about Alex, whose presence in her life had been both a source of pain and comfort?

“I don’t have an answer right now,” she admitted. “But I’ll let you know when I do.”

That evening, as Emma sat alone in her hospital room, her thoughts turned to the future. She knew the road ahead wouldn’t be easy, but she also knew she wasn’t alone. Alex’s decision to drop the custody case and Thomas’s determination to make amends were reminders that, despite everything, she had people who cared about her.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the room in a warm golden glow, Emma made a silent vow to herself. She would find a way to move forward—not just for her twins, but for herself. And no matter what challenges lay ahead, she would face them with the strength she had always carried within her.
