Love by the Contract

Chapter 70

Ch. 70 / 200 Apr 25, 2026

Emma sat in her office, the hum of the city beyond her window muted against the storm brewing in her thoughts. The press conference fallout had been swift and brutal. Headlines questioning Alex’s role in the twins’ condition were splashed across every major outlet. The accusations ranged from negligence to outright deception, and while she didn’t want to believe any of it, the seed of doubt had been planted.

Her phone buzzed on the desk. Another email, another inquiry from a journalist. She ignored it, letting the weight of uncertainty settle over her. The sound of the door opening behind her broke the silence.

“Emma,” Thomas said gently, stepping inside. “You’ve been quiet all day. Are you okay?”

Emma turned to face him, her expression weary. “Do you think it’s true?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “That Alex could… hide something like this?”

Thomas frowned, leaning against the edge of her desk. “I’ve known Alex for a long time. He’s made mistakes, but I don’t believe he’d intentionally hurt his own children. If there’s an explanation, he’ll give it to you.”

Emma nodded, though the unease in her chest didn’t lift. “I need answers. For the twins, for myself.”

As if summoned by her words, her phone buzzed again. This time, it was a video call from Alex. She hesitated for a moment before answering. His face filled the screen, weary but determined.

“Emma,” he said, his voice steady despite the visible strain. “I’m on my way back. I’ll be there in a few hours.”

Her breath caught. “With the twins?”

Alex nodded, a faint smile breaking through the tension. “They’re doing so well, Emma. The treatment worked better than anyone expected. They’re stronger now.”

Relief washed over her, bringing tears to her eyes. “That’s amazing, Alex. I’ve missed them so much.”

“I know,” he said softly. “We need to talk when I get there. About everything.”

The call ended, leaving Emma with a mixture of hope and dread. She glanced at Thomas, whose expression was unreadable.

The evening came faster than she anticipated. Emma stood by the front window, watching as Alex’s car pulled into the driveway. She rushed outside as he opened the door, stepping out with the twins bundled carefully in his arms. Her heart swelled at the sight of them, their rosy cheeks and curious eyes a stark contrast to the fragile infants she’d left in the NICU.

“Emma,” Alex said, his voice filled with emotion. He handed one of the twins to her, and she cradled the baby against her chest, tears streaming down her face.

“They’re perfect,” she whispered, pressing a kiss to her daughter’s forehead.

For a few moments, the world narrowed to just the four of them. It was only when they stepped inside that the weight of the unspoken accusations settled over them.

Once the twins were settled in their cribs, Emma and Alex sat across from each other in the living room. The silence stretched between them until Alex finally spoke.

“I saw the headlines,” he said, his tone heavy. “I know what people are saying.”

Emma folded her hands in her lap. “Then you know I need to hear the truth, Alex. Did you know about the genetic risks?”

He shook his head firmly. “No. I swear to you, Emma, I didn’t know. When the twins were diagnosed, I had my genetic history reviewed. Nothing came up. These accusations are baseless.”

“Then why are they coming now?” she pressed. “Who would have a reason to spread this?”

Alex’s jaw tightened. “Victor Harlow. He’s been involved in the pharmaceutical industry for decades. The clinic we took the twins to used a treatment that competes with one of his company’s developments. This is his way of retaliating.”

Emma’s mind raced. “He’s trying to discredit us. The foundation, the twins… everything.”

“Exactly,” Alex said. “But I have proof he’s behind this. Documentation, emails—enough to expose him.”

Emma’s chest tightened. “If we go public with this, it’ll be a fight.”

Alex nodded. “I’m ready for it. Are you?”

Later that night, as they checked on the twins together, the tension between them eased slightly. Standing over the cribs, Emma felt a sense of unity she hadn’t experienced in a long time.

“They’re beautiful,” Alex said, his voice soft. “Just like their mother.”

Emma glanced at him, her heart aching with the weight of their shared history. “Alex…”

He turned to face her fully, his expression serious. “Emma, I know I’ve made mistakes. I’ve let you down in ways I can’t take back. But being with the twins, fighting for them… it made me realize what I want. I want us to be a family again.”

Her breath hitched, his words both comforting and terrifying. “Alex, I don’t know if it’s that simple.”

“It’s not,” he admitted. “But I’m willing to put in the work if you are. You don’t have to decide now. Just… think about it.”

As he left the room, Emma stood alone by the cribs, her heart and mind at war. She thought of Alex’s proposal, of Thomas’s unwavering support, and of the path she wanted to take for herself and her children. The decision ahead loomed large, leaving her at a crossroads she hadn’t expected to face.
