Emma sat at her desk, the folder Victor Harlow had sent lying open in front of her. The accusations against Thomas seemed too calculated to be coincidental, yet the case had been dismissed years ago. Her mind churned with doubt and anger. Why hadn’t Thomas mentioned this? Was there truth to these claims, or was this just another of Victor’s ploys to undermine her?
She picked up her phone and dialed Thomas’s number. He answered almost immediately, his voice warm. “Hey, Emma. What’s up?”
“We need to talk,” she said, her voice sharper than she intended. “Can you come by my office?”
There was a brief pause. “Of course. I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”
When Thomas arrived, Emma gestured for him to sit across from her. His usual easygoing demeanor faltered as he noticed the tension in her expression. She slid the folder across the desk.
“Victor Harlow sent me this,” she said bluntly.
Thomas opened the folder, his face darkening as he skimmed the documents. When he finally looked up, his jaw was tight. “I can explain,” he said, his voice steady but tinged with frustration. “This was a smear campaign from years ago. The accusations were baseless, but the damage was done. It’s the reason I left that company and started fresh.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Emma asked, her voice quieter now but no less strained. “If you’d been upfront, this wouldn’t have blindsided me.”
Thomas leaned forward, his hands clasped. “Because it’s not who I am anymore. I’ve spent years rebuilding my reputation, proving I’m someone people can trust. Bringing it up felt like reopening a wound that didn’t need to be reopened.”
Emma studied him, her emotions a whirlwind. She wanted to believe him—needed to believe him—but Victor’s threats loomed large in her mind. Finally, she nodded. “I believe you. But we need to be transparent about this, Thomas. If Victor is using this against us, we have to stay ahead of him.”
Thomas’s shoulders relaxed slightly. “You’re right. Let’s address it head-on.”
The next morning, Emma called a press conference to formally announce her foundation and confront the growing tension Victor had stirred. The room buzzed with anticipation as reporters filed in, cameras flashing. Emma stood at the podium, flanked by Thomas and several key supporters of the foundation.
“Thank you all for being here today,” Emma began, her voice calm and resolute. “This foundation was born from personal experience and a desire to help families navigate the challenges of rare genetic disorders. Our mission is simple: to provide resources, hope, and a path forward for those who need it most.”
She paused, her gaze steady. “However, we’ve recently encountered resistance from individuals who see our work as a threat. Transparency is at the core of what we do, so I want to address some allegations head-on.”
Emma gestured toward Thomas. “Thomas has been instrumental in shaping this foundation, offering his expertise and unwavering support. Recently, questions have been raised about his past. While these claims are rooted in dismissed legal cases, we want to assure you that Thomas has always acted with integrity and has dedicated his career to helping others.”
Thomas stepped forward, his expression earnest. “Mistakes were made at a company I worked for years ago, but I was cleared of any wrongdoing. I’ve spent my career since then ensuring transparency and accountability in everything I do. I’m proud to stand by Emma and this foundation.”
The room erupted into a flurry of questions, but Emma raised a hand to quiet the reporters.
“We will not let baseless accusations deter us from our mission. Our focus remains on the families and children who need our support. Thank you.”
Stepping away from the podium, Emma felt a surge of pride and relief. She’d taken control of the narrative, refusing to let Victor’s tactics derail her vision. But the moment was short-lived.
As they exited the building, a group of reporters surrounded them, their questions sharp and invasive.
“Emma, what about the allegations against Alex Barrett?” one reporter shouted.
Emma froze, her pulse quickening. “What allegations?” she asked, her voice wary.
The reporter thrust a microphone toward her. “Sources suggest that Alex’s negligence may have contributed to your twins’ condition. Do you have a response?”
Emma’s stomach dropped. The air around her seemed to thicken as more reporters chimed in, their questions overlapping.
“Is it true Alex withheld information about his family’s genetic history?”
“Were you aware of the risks during your pregnancy?”
Thomas stepped forward, shielding Emma from the onslaught. “This press conference is over,” he said firmly, guiding her toward the car.
But the questions lingered, each one cutting deeper than the last. As the car pulled away, Emma stared out the window, her mind racing. She’d faced threats before, but this felt different—more personal, more damaging.
