Axels POV
As Hector and one of the pack warriors took the Beta to the dungeon Angel turned to look at Athena before pacing back and forth. It was obvious she wanted to say something and was struggling with how to bring it up.
"How could you not tell us? How could none of you tell us? You're not just any wolf Athena you are a guardian. The guardian. There hasn't been one in existence in over a hundred years. There is a reason for that" Angel was going off on one, instead of being happy that her once defenceless daughter was now powerful, she was beyond angry. However, it peaked my attention when she stated she knew things about Athenas wolf, things I didn't even know "Now not only will you be challenged by some when you take over our pack, but goddess forbid anyone finding out what you are because you will find yourself a target" Athena turned away from her mum backing herself to the wall, she didn't feel comfortable being the centre of attention and through the bond I could feel how scared she felt, how she wanted to hide away and continue to be un-noticed.
"Hey back off, don't forget whose pack land you're on. She may be your daughter Angel and I mean you know disrespect but if you continue to speak to my mate in that way, I will have you escorted off" Thor was fighting to come forward at the disrespect shown to his mate. "Athena will be kept safe, guardian or not no one will be laying their hands on her. She has done nothing but suffer her entire life. The moment we became mates I felt and saw everything. She suffered not only at the hands of her sister but other pack members and unfortunately mine. I will forever regret the pain I caused her, and I use it to fuel myself every day, to protect her from ever being abused again" every word I spoke was the truth, I used the hate I felt for myself at what I had done to my mate to carry me forward.
"I don't think you truly understand the nature of what my daughter is, of who she is. Being a guardian isn't something to be taken lightly. The more people that know what she is the more danger she is in. The last guardian was betrayed by those she trusted, she was forced to mate, to produce a pup who would wield extraordinary power only because he wasn't her fated mate the pup didn't survive. Because of the pup's death the guardian was then used as a breeding machine out of punishment. Wolves of both rankings and rogues would come and mate with her until she would fall pregnant. Only she never carried a pup to term, and eventually took her own life" I had never read anything that Angel had spoken of, I only knew what the books told me.
"How the fuck do you know so much about this, about her wolf?" Fur was beginning to sprout from my arms at the thought of someone other than me or Hector mating with Athena, and against her will at that. The thought made us feel sick and angry as the urge we felt to protect her grew.
"I get your pissed off, but you will not talk to my mate that way" Jake took a protective stance in front of Angel a snarl leaving him as he took in the fur that now lined my forearms.
"Or what? Going to hit me again? I mean go ahead hit me but this time I won't walk away. I'm stronger than you old man and I will not stop until you submit" There was no way I was going to let him win this time, to speak to me this way while on my own territory I don't think so. Just as Thor was about to force the shift Athena stepped in between me and her father making him retreat retracting his fur in the process.
"Will you both stop it. Axel, Dad enough. This is all getting way out of hand. Mum how do you know any of this" With her arms out between me and her father, Athena looked over to her mum needing an explanation. All her instincts were telling her to run and hide but instead she fought against them. She acted like a true Luna wanting to diffuse the situation and gather the relevant information she needed. Hector must have felt her shift in confidence as he skidded around the corner stopping in his tracks to see me and Jake ready to go at it with our mate blocking us.
"Because the last guardian was your great grandmother our moon goddess" Angel sat on the stool at the breakfast bar holding her head in her hands.
"But how is that possible, if she died over a hundred years ago how are we here? How did she have a daughter?" Athena was just as confused as the rest of us, even Jake looked taken aback by this revelation. Angel dropped her head and sighed before looking up at us.
"There was a moon goddess before the one we have now, she watched everyday as my grandmother was assaulted by those that swore to protect her. What she witnessed sickened her to the point that when my grandmother took her own life, she offered her a deal. She could take her place, become the moon goddess and get a second chance at life. A life she never got the chance to live. Of course, it wasn't going to be as simple as that because she is responsible for the lives of us all, she has to decide which of us are worthy to be given life, to be given a chance at rebirth when our time comes to an end. However, she accepted the deal without hesitation and years later one evening she was looking out at the lake and found her mate; he was one of the most powerful Alphas to exist a bloodline as pure as our own. You know about the original wolf packs before they broke apart forming some of the packs that exist now, well, each one came from a god, each obtaining an element. Her mate was also born from a god only his parents were from the dark realm. One of the perks that being the moon goddess brings is that for one year every hundred years she gets to live among us. Well, she took the opportunity, met her mate and fell pregnant with my mother. She got to spend the duration of her pregnancy at her mate's side finally experiencing love. Only once her pup was born, she couldn't bare the thought of bonding with her only to have to leave. So, the next night she left, she returned to the moon realm and watched everyday as her daughter grew and became the young woman she was, a warrior and the best leader this world had ever seen. To make up for not being around she mated her to the Alpha King, the wolf with the purest heart and the purest bloodline, the very first original wolf line. She didn't want her daughter to suffer the same fate she had so instead of letting the fates choose her mate she did it for her" Everything she said shocked us, all our jaws were literally on the floor. There was no history on the moon goddess anywhere, everything we knew were based on rumours or what we had been taught growing up.
"How... how could you possibly know all this? The elders have never said a word about the origins of the moon goddess. It isn't written in any book, on any scroll. Angel this kind of information should have been something you told me not just kept to yourself" Jake took a step back from his mate, he was becoming more wound up by the second, his alpha aura spilling into the room. We may not be best buds, but he certainly had a point. If there was the slightest chance that one of her daughters would have inherited this wolf it would have been nice to be prepared.
"I get I should have come clean with what I knew but when my father told me the story, he assured me it was highly unlikely the moon goddess would ever send the guardian back to this world again. Not after what happened to her. How the fuck was I to know she would curse her own grandchild with the rarest of all wolves? Look I trust her. I trust she wouldn't have sent the guardian to Athena if she didn't believe she was strong enough. Though now it makes sense as to why you were mated with not only one but two wolves. One being an elemental, a bloodline from the original packs and a silver wolf. Just please heed the story I have told you. Do not just trust anyone with this, your great grandmother learnt the hard way and it isn't something I wish for history to repeat" Angel walked towards Athena who looked on the edge of breaking down. The second her mum cuddled her the dam opened. Together they fell to the floor, Angel allowing her daughter to cry out everything she had held in for so long.
"Let's go deal with the beta and give them some time. It's a lot for Athena to absorb and I have a feeling there's more for them to discuss" Jake patted me on the shoulder as he walked past me following the warrior towards the dungeon.
"What do you mean more for them to discuss?" I looked to Hector who was also curious to what Jake meant. Jake however just smiled at the both of us though it didn't quite reach his eyes.
"Its not my place to say, it's for them to talk over and when the time is right you will know"
