Getting away with the Alpha's Pup

Chapter 212

Ch. 212 / 231 Apr 27, 2026

Giovanni's Perspective

I sat by the window in my study, gazing at the distant city, shrouded in twilight. My eyes were empty, my heart a tangle of emotions—anger, helplessness, loss, and even a sliver of pain. Despite the signed agreement lying on the table before me, bearing his personal signature, there was no sense of victory, only a suffocating weight pressing down on my chest.

The handwriting on the document no longer held my attention. I had long grown accustomed to days like this—spinning endlessly in the vortex of power. As the Alpha of the werewolf pack, I was bound by relentless responsibilities and obligations. And today, I had made yet another compromise—one that had felt inevitable.

"Alpha Giovanni, it's come to this. If you don't accept Elena's union, the entire pack will be thrown into chaos."

Tobias's words echoed in my mind like a thorn lodged deep in my heart. He was my loyal Beta, a seasoned strategist, and I knew he was right.

My fingers tapped lightly against the desk, my voice calm and measured, as if my heart had long since ceased to beat with emotion. But I knew what festered beneath my composure—the suffocating chains of obligation. I never wanted to rely on a political marriage to secure my position. Yet today, I had no choice. The pressure from the clan, the demands of the elders, and the fate of my own family left me with no alternatives.

Taking a deep breath, I rose to my feet and stepped onto the balcony. The last light of the setting sun cast a golden glow over my shoulders. I glanced down at the ring on my right hand—a symbol of power and duty—my fingertips brushing against the cool metal.

"Elena... is she really the one?" I muttered under my breath, a flicker of revulsion crossing my eyes.

Elena, the daughter of another pack's leader, was the ideal candidate for an alliance. With her prestigious lineage and noble heritage, she was the perfect Luna in the eyes of the elders—a means to solidify my rule and extend the pack's influence. Outwardly, she checked every box. But she had never touched my heart.

A familiar face surfaced in my mind—Fern. The woman I had once loved so deeply. The woman whose betrayal and departure had shattered my world.

Six years had passed, yet her image remained etched into my soul, as vivid as if it had happened yesterday.

"You left. You betrayed me. But you never gave me an explanation."

My fists clenched, anger and loss swelling inside me.

Suddenly, my phone vibrated, breaking the silence. I glanced at the screen—Elena.

Exhaling slowly, I pressed the answer button. "Elena."

Her voice drifted through the receiver—smooth, poised, carrying an air of confidence. "Giovanni, I hope everything is going well for tonight's banquet. Are you ready to announce our union?"

My brow furrowed instinctively. A marriage alliance. I had known for a long time that this was what the pack and the elders wanted, yet every time I heard those words, an inexplicable loathing rose within me.

"I will proceed as planned." My reply was succinct, my tone devoid of warmth.

"Good." A slight smirk laced Elena's voice. "Tonight, we will stand together before the entire pack. We will unite, and together, we will build a stronger future."

"Yes." My voice remained cold. My gaze drifted toward the horizon as if I could see Fern's face in the distance—the woman who had once been mine, the woman who had never truly left my heart.

After hanging up, the weight in my chest only grew heavier. I knew I had reached a crossroads with no way back. The interests of the clan, the fragile balance of power—none of it would allow me to turn away. If I rejected this marriage, my authority would be called into question, and worse, it could incite political turmoil. That was a risk I could not afford.

My eyes fell once more on the signed agreement. Every word on the page was a reminder—I had made my choice, and that choice would change everything.

A soft knock at the door interrupted my thoughts.

"Alpha, the banquet preparations are complete. Ms. Elena has arrived."

I closed my eyes briefly, collecting myself. "Give me a few minutes."

I sank back into my chair, my gaze fixed on the tabletop. But no matter how hard I tried, Fern's face lingered in my mind.

Back then, we had been inseparable. Now, even though bitterness and resentment had taken root, the mere thought of her still twisted something deep inside me.

"Fern… where the hell are you? What are you doing?" I whispered, as if the wind might carry my words to her.

After a few minutes, I forced myself to stand. I took a deep breath, shoving all my emotions back into the depths of my heart. Tonight, I had a duty to fulfill.

I walked to the door, my resolve hardening. This banquet was not just about securing the pack's future—it was also about masking the turmoil within me. I had to play the role of an Alpha, no matter how much it tore me apart.

When I entered the grand hall, Elena was already waiting at the entrance, greeting me with a dazzling smile. She looked stunning in an elaborate evening gown, radiating elegance and confidence.

She stepped forward, slipping her hand around my wrist. "Tonight is a moment of glory for our pack. Are you ready?"

My eyes swept over her face, and a cold flicker passed through me. Her smile was dazzling, but I knew—it was nothing more than a carefully crafted mask.

"I'm ready." My voice was even, as if everything had already been decided.

The banquet commenced, and I stepped onto the stage with Elena to announce our union. Cheers erupted, applause resounding through the hall. The pack was exhilarated by the prospect of this alliance.

Yet my heart remained as heavy as stone, sinking into an abyss where no light reached.

My gaze drifted over the crowd—until it landed on a familiar figure.

Diana.

In that instant, the world around me seemed to fade into silence.

She stood at the far end of the hall, clad in a simple black dress, watching from the shadows. Her gaze was unreadable, cold, yet piercingly familiar.

My heart clenched. A flicker of disbelief crossed my eyes.

But the moment I turned for a clearer look, she was gone—vanished into the sea of people.

I exhaled sharply, my fists tightening.

"Fern…" I murmured, her name slipping from my lips like a plea.

Even after all these years, the pain of her absence had never dulled. And tonight, as I stood beside another woman, announcing a union that meant nothing to me, the wound only deepened.
