Daniel's Perspective
The wind howled in my ears, and my heart nearly leapt into my throat. In that moment, the world seemed to freeze. There was only the sound of the wind and the frantic thumping of my heart. I looked down, closer and closer to the lake, knowing that this was the moment when I would reach my limit.
But then, at the exact moment I braced myself, I turned my head to look at Giovanni. He, too, had leapt off the cliff and was plummeting downward. I had expected him to squeeze his eyes shut, flailing his arms and legs like I was, bracing for the inevitable plunge into the water. But what happened next was beyond anything I could have predicted.
As we neared the surface of the lake at nearly the same time, I witnessed an incredible transformation: Giovanni shifted mid-air. In an instant, his body morphed into the form of a majestic werewolf—his muscular frame expanding with raw power, his entire being exuding the energy of a storm. The moment his feet touched the water, he effortlessly sprang from the surface and landed with perfect precision on a nearby rock, standing tall and steady.
I could only stare in stunned disbelief. Giovanni, the guy who always seemed so aloof and untouchable, was navigating this extreme challenge with such calm mastery. His wolf form radiated a formidable aura in the moonlight, as if he had been born for this—destined to be a hunter, completely in control of every aspect.
I watched, transfixed, for a moment forgetting that I was still in freefall. My heart nearly stopped, and I realized I should have reacted sooner, that I should have taken this moment to brace myself. But everything had happened so quickly.
Then I finally hit the water. The cold shock of it consumed me in an instant, and I felt as though my very soul had frozen. My body seemed to lose all control. I struggled, thrashing helplessly, but it was no use. The water poured into my mouth, and I choked violently as a wave of panic surged through me. I never imagined I'd end up in this situation—trapped, drowning.
The worst part was that I couldn't even help myself. The suppression of my werewolf bloodline had robbed me of my instinctive abilities, leaving me with no real swimming skills. There was no way I could escape on my own.
"Daniel!" Suddenly, I heard a familiar voice shout from high above. It was my mother, Fern, calling my name in a voice full of fear and desperation. She was on the cliff, unable to reach me, but her anxiety was clear. She wanted to save me, but there was nothing she could do.
I was sinking fast, the cold numbing me to the point of unconsciousness. My arms flailed weakly, unable to keep me afloat.
In that desperate moment, a strong arm gripped me. I didn't even have time to react—I just instinctively grabbed the hand, feeling the powerful force that yanked me out of the water.
"Are you okay?" Giovanni's voice was low, firm, yet there was an underlying softness. He pulled me to the shore, dragging me forcefully onto the rocky beach. Water dripped from my body as I gasped for breath, my muscles rigid from the cold.
I stared at him, frozen. He had just saved my life. Despite all the pranks I'd played on him, all the times I'd considered leaving him high and dry, all I could do now was silently thank him. He hadn't abandoned me, as I had feared. Instead, he had gone out of his way to pull me from the depths.
"Why didn't you swim?" Giovanni looked down at me, concern darkening his expression. There was no hint of judgment, only genuine worry. His voice was cool, but I could feel the warmth in his concern.
I climbed out of the water, my hair drenched and my whole body a mess. I wanted to say something, but I froze when I saw the blood on Giovanni's arm. In his effort to save me, he had cut himself on a nearby rock. The deep gash didn't look like a minor injury.
"You're hurt!" I shouted, rushing toward him.
"It's nothing. Just a scratch," Giovanni said, glancing at his wound with no change in his expression. He was always so calm, and even in moments like this, he remained as unshakable as a mountain.
But I knew that the Giovanni before me was not just a strong, composed werewolf—he was someone worthy of my respect. All the earlier pranks, his usual confidence, and even our argument seemed insignificant now. The Giovanni standing in front of me was the true hero who had saved me.
I froze for a moment, then a pang of shame struck me. Though I knew I shouldn't be so hard on myself, I couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of guilt at the thought of him risking his life for me.
"Thank you, Giovanni," I whispered, my voice trembling slightly.
He didn't respond right away, just gave a slight nod and turned his gaze away from the lake, as if the events of the past few minutes hadn't even happened. Then he reached out and gave me a light pat on the shoulder, a small smile in his eyes. "Don't be so reckless next time, Daniel."
Giovanni took my hand and effortlessly pulled me to my feet, as though there was no danger in the world. My eyes widened as I looked at his serene expression, a mixture of anger and confusion welling up inside me. I realized, not for the first time, how little I had been able to truly understand him. He was unshaken, even when I wanted him to show more of his vulnerability.
He looked down at me and smiled faintly. "Did you really think I was going to get hurt?"
I gritted my teeth and stayed silent. My heart, suddenly complicated, twisted inside me.
It hit me then—my plan, which I thought would teach Giovanni a lesson, had overlooked one crucial fact: no matter what he did, Giovanni seemed like something beyond the reach of ordinary pain. He was no longer just a person; he was something I couldn't easily touch or shake.
In that moment, I realized I had been wrong.
I stood there, frozen, my heart churning like a tidal wave of emotions. I wanted to say something, but I didn't even know where to begin.
