Fatty Betty's Diary: My Bully's Crush

Rivalry on the Rise

Ch. 96 / 251 Mar 20, 2026

Marcus’s POV

The squeak of shoes on the hardwood and Coach Reed’s whistle should have been a comfort, but lately, each sound only heightened my irritation. Ever since Betty won nationals, it felt like everything had shifted. Betty was everywhere, the new “campus star” and somehow, Brent was rising to the same prominence within the team. It didn’t help that Coach was watching both of us like hawks and every glance felt like a quiet judgment, as if he were measuring us up.

At practice, Brent kept up with me. He’d been slipping subtle jabs into our conversations for days and the guy had a smugness I couldn’t shake. Maybe it was because he knew how unsettled I’d been since Coach hinted that my captaincy might be “evaluated” or maybe because he knew how strained things had been between me and Betty.

“Everything okay, Marcus?” Brent asked, just as I missed a three-pointer.

I gritted my teeth. “Focus on your own game” I muttered grabbing the rebound and taking my position at the line.

Brent didn’t back down. “Guess I don’t have much to worry about if that’s your best shot.”

The words struck a nerve and I clenched my jaw, ignoring the heat of frustration building in my chest. But his smirk only deepened and as we broke into scrimmage, I found myself shadowing him, matching every move. I wasn’t about to let him a newcomer make a fool out of me.

During a critical play, I sprinted down the court, faking a pass before going for a layup. Brent was right on my tail, his presence close pressuring. I could feel his breath practically on my shoulder and as I jumped, his hand slapped the ball out of my grip sending it skidding across the floor.

Coach’s whistle cut through the air. “Marcus, Brent! This isn’t a one-on-one match. Either work together or I’ll bench both of you!”

The team shared uneasy glances and I could see John and Chris, our newer players, looking at Brent with something like admiration. The sting of losing their respect grated on me, but I held back from replying to Coach biting my tongue as Brent simply nodded looking far too pleased with himself.

As we broke Brent leaned over just close enough to murmur “Looks like you’re slipping, Captain.”

“Don’t get too comfortable, Brent. You’ve got a long way to go.”

But his smirk only widened and I knew he’d made himself at home already. The growing pressure from Coach my family’s expectations and the need to hold onto my place as captain made it feel like I was losing control piece by piece. Brent was just the final thorn in my side.
