Third-Person POV
Saturday’s game brought a new kind of tension. The gym was packed buzzing with the anticipation of friends, family and even a few scouts. Coach Reed’s words rang in Marcus’s ears a warning about Brent’s rise on the team and his own recent struggles. The coach’s hint that his leadership was on shaky ground had only intensified the rivalry.
As the game began, Brent and Marcus found themselves in a silent battle pushing each other to the edge. Brent took every opportunity to outpace Marcus dribbling circles around him cutting him off on fast breaks and ignoring the obvious irritation flashing across Marcus’s face.
Coach looked between them, his gaze heavy with disappointment.
“Marcus, you’re the captain. Act like it. And Brent this isn’t a solo match. Work as a team or you’ll sit out.”
They exchanged a glare before nodding but the tension lingered. And as they headed back onto the court the rivalry only grew sharper each of them trying to prove their dominance.
With only seconds left on the clock and the score tied the pressure intensified. Marcus had the ball the crowd’s cheers deafening and Brent was right on his heels. As Marcus went for the layup Brent intercepted swiping the ball and taking a quick shot that swished just as the buzzer rang.
The crowd erupted and Brent was surrounded by teammates their hands clapping his back. Marcus walked off the court fists clenched his role as captain slipping further out of his grasp. But Marcus has no intention of giving up. “Who’s Brent? He's a pathetic kid. I'm gonna crush him.”
