Betty’s POV
The morning of nationals, the entire team gathered at the school, nerves buzzing in the air like electricity. We’d all dressed in our uniforms, our faces set with determination. I could see the mix of excitement and tension in everyone’s expressions, but I was grateful to see that no one looked scared. We were ready, even if Ivy and her team thought otherwise.
“Alright, team,” I said, gathering everyone in a tight circle. “We’ve worked so hard to get here. We’re ready, and we’re going to give it everything we’ve got.”
Carlos nodded, his usual goofy grin replaced by a rare seriousness. “We’re with you, Betty. All the way.”
Lucy grabbed my hand, her fingers trembling slightly. “We’ve got this,” she said, her voice soft but steady.
Stacey stood off to the side, watching us with a small, knowing smile. She’d been quieter than usual this morning, her gaze shifting between me and the rest of the team. I hadn’t expected her to be this invested, but her support had been unwavering.
As we loaded onto the bus, I found myself next to Stacey, and for a moment, we just sat in silence, watching the city blur past us through the windows.
“Nervous?” she asked, glancing over at me.
“Yeah,” I admitted. “But I’m also… ready. Thanks to you.”
Stacey’s lips curved into a half-smile. “Just don’t get all sentimental on me, Betty. You’re the leader here. And I… I’m just glad I could help.”
Her words surprised me, but before I could respond, the bus pulled into the arena parking lot, and we were swept into a flurry of activity. My heart pounded as we stepped out, taking in the massive building that loomed before us. The sound of music and cheering drifted from inside, and the energy was almost overwhelming.
“Let’s go, Unseen,” I called, feeling a wave of excitement ripple through me. “It’s time.”
