"So you’re that not-Stacey girl, his best friend, right? The reason he broke my heart.” Megan’s lips curved into a bittersweet smile as she crossed her arms over her belly.
"What are you talking about?"
Megan take a step closer, letting out a dry chuckle. “Oh, you’re really naive as he said. He couldn’t stop talking about you. Every time we were together, it was ‘my best friend this’ and ‘my best friend that.’ And how much he regrets not telling you he’s in love with you.”
Betty’s breath caught, chest tightening. She opened her mouth to respond but found herself at a loss. Her emotions swirling like a storm. She studied Megan carefully now, and what unsettled her most wasn’t Megan’s beauty or the pregnancy—it was the way she saw pieces of herself in her.
Megan chuckled, noticing Betty looking at her bump. "We were drunk,” she explained brushing a hand over it as if Betty asked a numb question with her gaze. “Bonfire and all. Things happened.”
“What do you want?”
“Believe it or not, I love him too." Betty’s stomach twisted at those words. "I want him to be part of my child’s life. I don’t know if he’ll ever love me the way he loves you, but I’m willing to try. For my baby’s sake."
Betty felt torn. Megan wasn’t just someone who had Brent’s child—she was someone who cared for him in a way that was too familiar, too close to the same way Betty once did. Her mind racing with the weight of what she’d just learned. Brent loved her. He’d always loved her. But now, there was no clean path forward.
"Do you think he’ll step up?" Megand asked quietly, her voice steady despite the chaos inside her.
"I think he will," Betty said firmly. "Brent’s a good man. He just… doesn’t always know how to handle what’s in front of him."
