Greyson had let Oscar in and took him to his office. Harry and Brooklyn entered a few minutes after and Brooklyn saw Oscar sitting on the chair opposite Greyson's desk.
"Sit down," Harry said quietly to Brooklyn and she took a seat on the couch that was pushed up against the wall. Harry walked round and stood next to Greyson, who was seated against the desk, leaning against the wall behind them and crossing his arms over his chest.
"Talk, and I'll try to not to kill you," Greyson said sharply.
"Well, you guys know I'm a werewolf," Oscar said slowly.
"How kind of you to finally admit that to us," Greyson said sarcastically. "Now, tell us something that we don't already know. How about what you're doing on my territory? You have no pack. You're a lone wolf. You need an Alpha's permission to be on their land."
Oscar swallowed. "I apologise, but I wasn't aware I was coming back to this town," Oscar said. "I left my old pack, from a few towns over, and when I did I left town. I left my home. I travelled for a while, but money problems brought me back."
"I should kill you for trespassing," Greyson said. "You know my pack isn't known for its leniency."
"Alpha, you have my sincere apologies-"
"Why did you leave your old pack?" Greyson demanded.
Oscar looked at his hands. "I was forced to leave," he admitted.
"Forced? So you were made rogue?" Greyson snapped. "That isn't done lightly. What did you do to deserve that?"
"I..." Oscar sighed. "My previous Alpha was very stuck in the old ways. He banished me from my pack because of my sexuality."
Greyson's eyebrows rose. "Your sexuality?" He repeated.
"I'm bisexual, and I believe I was wrongly kicked out. It wasn't fair, but he was my Alpha so I had to do as I was told," Oscar said.
"Well, Oscar, you're lucky that this pack does not discriminate," Greyson said and pursed his lips. "Now, tell us about Brooklyn's car crash."
Brooklyn perked up at the mention of this and Oscar glanced over his shoulder at her. "I am deeply sorry about your accident, Brooke. I never meant to cause you harm."
"What were you really doing there?" Brooklyn asked.
"I was running from a werewolf hunter," Oscar sighed. "I was the wolf you saw. I was too focused on escaping I didn't see the car before it was too late, and when the crash happened the hunter ran away, and I shifted back to human. The rest you know."
"Werewolf hunter?" Harry said. "We haven't heard of any hunters in town."
"Neither had I till the other week. He saw me for the first time and he's been hunting me ever since," Oscar explained.
"He," Greyson said. "He who?"
"I have reason to believe that the hunter is Ben."
"Oh my gosh, my boss is a werewolf hunter," Brooklyn whispered. "I couldn't get away from this world even if I tried."
Harry sent Brooklyn a look.
"What leads you to that conclusion?" Greyson asked.
"I've been keeping tabs on him. Everything adds up," Oscar said.
Greyson sighed and nodded. "And why did you not tell us this when we first questioned you?"
"I was scared," Oscar admitted. "Scared of Ben finding out. He's good. One of the best hunters I've seen."
"Well, there's been no deaths in a town full of werewolves," Greyson said. "He's not doing very well at the moment."
"I fear that danger may soon come," Oscar said. "I'm sure he has suspicions about people, but he's just waiting to confirm them. I fear that he already suspects you, Harry. He's seen the way you and Brooke are. You two haven't known each other for long and the bond you have is clear. The fact that you are mates is obvious. And he clearly doesn't like you considering you beat up his brother, if he finds out for sure about you then it's going to be bad."
"Your concern for my safety is heartwarming," Harry said sarcastically.
"I'm not concerned about you," Oscar said. "You're the Warrior of this pack, and if Ben knows about you then he will be able to tell. He knows it won't be easy to take you down. I'm worried for Brooke. The easiest way to take a wolf down is to go through their mate."
Brooke paled. "Oh god," she gasped.
"Babe-"
"And this is exactly why I don't want to be mates with a freaking werewolf!" She exclaimed and scrambled up from the couch. "God, I'm going to be werewolf bait. This is crazy. Why couldn't I just find a normal boy, a nice boy-"
"Brooklyn, shut up," Harry called.
"You shut up!" Brooklyn snapped. "You're the one putting me in danger, wolfy!" Brooklyn rushed to the door and walked out, not wanting to listen to Oscar anymore.
"Brooklyn, where are you going?" Harry's voice called as he chased after her.
"Away from you!"
"You're not safe away from me!"
"And I'm clearly not safe with you either!" Brooklyn yelled.
"Just listen to me!" Harry shouted.
"A crazy dude that kills werewolves, may or may not know about you, and if he does then this crazy dude, who is my freaking manager, might try to get to you through me!" Brooklyn exclaimed. "I don't want to deal with that! No thank you! I didn't sign up for this-"
"For goodness sake!" Harry sighed and managed to grab Brooklyn's wrist, pulling her to a stop. "Do you think I'd let anyone hurt you, Brooklyn?"
"By the sounds of it you're not going to have a choice!"
"Take a breath, and breathe," Harry said sternly. "Babe, we don't know if he does know about us, and even if he does then I won't let him touch a hair on your head."
"I want to go home," Brooklyn said. Her eyes were wide and Harry could feel her panic. "Please. I need time to process this."
"Brooklyn, I don't think that's the best idea right now. You need to calm down."
"I'm calm! I'm super duper calm! As calm as I can be knowing there's a werewolf hunter out there!" Brooklyn said and took a deep breath.
"And I'm the one who won't be calm letting you leave, knowing there's a werewolf hunter out there," Harry said.
"I'll open my mind," Brooklyn said. "I won't block you out. You'll be able to check that I'm okay."
Harry narrowed his eyes. "You won't?"
"No, but you aren't going to be in my head constantly," Brooklyn said. "If I feel you for more than a few minutes at a time then I'm blocking you. Okay?"
Harry pursed his lips and nodded. "Okay, get your things."
Ten minutes later Harry was driving Brooklyn back to her house. Brooklyn let out a sigh of relief when she saw her home, and she scrambled to grab her bag.
"Not so fast," Harry said and Brooklyn narrowed her eyes when she heard the doors lock.
"Harry, don't you dare lock me in this car," Brooklyn said slowly.
"Brooklyn, don't you dare block me out," Harry said firmly. He gently touched her wrist. "Brooklyn?"
"Do not linger in my head," Brooklyn said. "Otherwise you will be blocked out."
"Promise me?" Harry said.
Brooklyn paused.
"Brooklyn," Harry said sternly.
"Fine," she sighed. "I promise. Now, open the damn door!"
Harry gave Brooklyn one last look before unlocking the doors and letting her out. Brooklyn climbed out of the car and walked into her house without looking back. She shut her house door behind her and heard Harry's car drive away.
The house was quiet when Brooklyn walked in. She assumed everyone was asleep.
"Jesus," she sighed and shook her head. Her mind was spinning with the newfound information. "Just try not to think about it," she told herself and made her way into the kitchen. "It's not big deal- holy shitballs, what the hell?" Brooklyn stopped in her tracks when she saw her dad sitting at the kitchen table.
Her dad smiled at her and coughed awkwardly. He had more grey hair than the last time she saw him. And more frown lines. The divorce was taking a lot out of him. "Hey, sweetheart, how are you?"
"What the hell?" Brooklyn demanded. "What are you doing here?"
*Babe, what's wrong?* Harry's voice was loud and clear in her head and Brooklyn jumped.
"You, shut up!" Brooklyn scowled
"Excuse me?" Brooklyn's dad said, raising his eyebrows at his daughter.
"No, not you," she groaned. "Oh, I don't need this right now, dad. You have no idea what is going on in my life right now. What are you doing here? Oh gosh, is mum here-"
"Brooke, honey, calm down. It's just me," her dad said. "I wanted to see how you were doing."
"A text can find that out," Brooklyn said. "Did you really need to turn up in the middle of the night?"
"I'm sorry, I just wanted to make sure you were okay. After the last time we spoke-"
"I don't want to talk about that," Brooklyn said quickly.
"Your mother wasn't in her right mind-"
"Do not try to defend her," Brooklyn said slowly. "There was no excuse for that. But at least I now know what she thinks."
"Brooke, she loves you-"
"Dad," Brooklyn sighed and shook her head. "Stop."
"I'm sorry, B," her dad sighed. "You look good, sweetheart, are you good?"
Brooklyn pursed her lips. "I've been better."
"How's the school here? Are you making friends?"
Brooklyn couldn't help but laugh slightly. "You could say that," she said. "I think I got more than I asked for when I moved here."
"I am sorry about sending you away," Brooklyn's dad frowned. "The divorce was just taking control of our lives."
"And mum never really wanted me around," Brooklyn sighed. "This just gave her a reason to kick me out."
"That's not true," her dad gasped. "Brooke, it's not-"
"It's fine, I've accepted it," Brooklyn shrugged. "I never was a mummy's girl. So, the divorce... is it done?"
Brooklyn's dad fidgeted. "Not quite," he said.
Brooklyn raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"We didn't get a divorce," her dad admitted.
Brooklyn's mouth dropped open. "What?"
"We've realised that we've been through a lot. I love your mother, Brooke, we're going to try things again."
"You couldn't be in the same room without tearing each other's heads off a few months ago, what the hell happened?" Brooklyn said.
"We're soulmates, you wouldn't understand, Brooke. One day, when you're older, you'll know what it's like to meet the other half of yourself," Brooklyn's dad said. "Whatever happens, you'll make things work."
Brooklyn rolled her eyes at the irony. "Soulmates? You and mum? You hate each other."
"You wouldn't understand. Yes, your mother drives me insane, but I love her. I always will. No matter what she does."
"Even if she tells are daughter she deserved to be raped?" Brooklyn wondered. Her dad paled. "Is that forgivable? In my eyes it isn't."
"Brooke, I'm so sorry about that. I really am. She was drunk-"
"Is it forgivable?" Brooklyn asked. "In your eyes, is it forgivable?"
"I love her, and it was a mistake-"
Brooklyn sighed and waved her hand. "Forget it. I know the answer."
Brooklyn's dad checked the time on his watch and frowned. "Where have you been? You're back very late."
"You have no right to act like a father right now," Brooklyn said. "I don't have to explain myself to you."
"I'm just wondering, Brooke."
"I was at a fr- somebody's house," Brooklyn said.
"This late?"
"Well, obviously," Brooklyn said. "Dad, I've got school tomorrow, I need to get to bed."
"I'm staying here for a few days," her dad said.
"You are?"
"Yes. Will you let me drive you to school?"
"I..." Brooklyn sighed and nodded. "Fine, okay."
"Thank you, B."
"I'm going to bed. Night, dad."
"Goodnight, Brooke."
