Daughter of the Damned

Chapter 18-Nature

Ch. 18 / 115 Dec 18, 2024

Mira's POV

Did I still have feelings for Braze? Hell no!

Not after what he did to me. I was not that pitiful.

Why then, was my heart beating abnormally?

Every time I closed my eyes , I could see Betty, on Bride's lap. I was definitely going crazy.

" Shit! It's thundering again. I hate thunder! "

Razzak was busy closing all the windows, one by one. She then came inside my blanket and cuddled up.

" I am sorry. Please bear with me. Ouch! "

She yelled as another round of thunder claps rumbled.

"Doesn't it bother you? "

She looked more distressed at my nonchalance.

" Have you ever been in love? "

I don't know why I asked her that.

"Me? No! Never! Why? Did anyone break your heart? You look broken. Was it one of those boys? "

She suddenly sat up, forgetting her fear.

"Are they still after you? Bothering you? Tell me, girl. "

Her shadow elongated in the background as she stood up with the blanket still over her shoulder.

Ping! Ping!

Just then my notification tone went off.

I turned to check my phone. It was from Braze.

" Sorry for today. "

That's what the text read.

Did he just say he was sorry for just today? I couldn't believe him. I should have left the text unread. Better block him. But I was a certified idiot.

I started typing a reply.

Then I erased it all because I was lost for words.

And then he goes ahead and sends the next text.

" How do you know that Kian guy? Is he interested in you? "

I was too stunned to speak. Luckily, the weather had cleared and Razzak had shifted back to her bed.

I was all spread out on my bed, ready to fight that keyboard war.

" It's none of your business. "

I texted back.

After a long pause, his answer came.

" I know. I just want you to be safe. You have no idea how guys think. His girlfriend told me he has his ways with girls. "

I scoffed at my screen.

I was so angry, I felt like going wherever he was staying and pulling his hair out.

What was he trying to do? Act like my Messiah once again?

I didn't need him. I didn't need his care. I didn't need his mercy.

I switched my phone off and decided to take a walk down the corridor.

To cool my mind off.

The corridor was deserted. I strutted down several steps.

Then I stopped. I stopped because I felt like someone was following me.

As I turned, for the split of a moment, I thought I saw my shadow detach from myself and turn towards the other direction.

I literally jumped and started running back towards my dorm.

I thought I heard the rustling of steps. Was it my own shadow that was following me back?

What was exactly happening? Was I awake or was this a dream?

The corridor began to constrict and expand as my vision began to become blurry.

I stopped, rubbed my eyes and looked up.

My white butterfly. It was there in front of me, fluttering.

I was so relieved to see it that I didn't notice, butterflies never flew at night.

Braze's POV

I didn't know if I ought to have meddled in her life again. It was a conscious choice when I decided to push her away. Why then, was I worried about her dating life? Did I expect her to wait for me without telling her what my problem was?

I smashed my hand against the table and it succumbed to the blow. The jug and glass went along with it, flooding the entire carpet.

" Sh*t! "

If only I had answers to what was happening to me. If only I could sort things out better.

Just then my phone rang.

I jumped at it, thinking it was probably Mira.

It wasn't.

But it was someone who immediately put a smile on my face.

" Is this the right time to talk to you? "

It was the vet.

" Yes. Yes, of course. "

"You wanted to meet, didn't you? Can you come to my hospital now? I mean it's not the ideal time but these are the best hours for someone like me. Can you make it within half an hour? "

Her voice, strangely, had the effect of a song in my ears.

I quickly checked my watch. It was well past midnight.

There will be no available means of public transport and I didn't even have access to a bike or a car.

" I will be there within half an hour. "

I said and hung up.

The next moment, I jumped out of the window and started running.

It felt nice.

I was running faster than the rain drops that were falling. I was running faster than the plane that flew above.

I had no idea how fast I was running but as I kept increasing my speed, it felt good, it felt nice. I was absolutely enjoying the thrill.

As soon as I reached the location, I dialed her number.

" Whoa! It hardly took you ten minutes. Did you bring your car? "

She asked.

We all know we should never lie to our doctors but I did so, without hesitation.

"I don't have a car. My friend dropped me in his. "

Was it coming from that buried fear of being ostracized? Was this human nature?

" Come in. Come in. Goodness. You are soaking wet! Is it raining outside? "

She peaked from her window, lowering the blinds.

"Did you friend not leave you under a shade? "

She stood up and began drying me with a towel, starting from my hair, face, then chest.

I grabbed her hands, taking the towel from her.

" Thanks. I can do this myself. "

She straightened her posture.

" Yeah, sure. Absolutely. It's just a habit. I usually get to meet helpless pups and cubs here. Sorry, please don't get me wrong. It was just a reflex. "

This was awkward. I didn't mean to offend her.

" There is nothing to be sorry about. "

I tried to smile in an attempt to diffuse the building tension, while sitting down on the chair.
