Chapter 16-Elsewhere

Ch. 16 / 115 Dec 18, 2024

***At Chemora-Present Day***

" You say you could detect some of them? Is that correct? "

Kilian asked , his purple eyes sparkling with excitement.

He was floating in a pitch black, backdrop but there was a cable tied firmly at his waist. Apparently, it was there to hold him back. It was there so he would not float away.

He was talking with a voice. The voice came to him very feeble and he could not see the face of the speaker.

" Not some, only one. I could detect some energy blasts. Very soft and momentary. I think his powers are just awakening. It's at the earliest stage. The energy blasts are involuntary and the frequency is also unpredictable. We haven't been able to locate him yet but we are all working at that. I am hoping we will be able to send you a positive report soon. "

The voice concluded.

" You say it's a he, not a she. Are you certain? "

Kilian's voice sounded a little disappointed.

" Very certain Lord Kilian. I would not report a mistake. "

Kilian nodded.

" You can go now. Our conversations should be as brief as possible. We don't want the Watchers after us. At least not before we find her. "

With that Kilian moved his hand in front of him as if wiping the air and then snapped his finger.

Apparently, the connection was severed and the cable that was tied at his waist, gently lowered him over a pedestal.

" Ah! " He unclipped himself and hopped off from there. When he opened the door leading out from there, a bright light greeted him. His pupil constricted to adjust itself because he had been in pitch black darkness for a while.

" Don't these stars look like they are shining too bright? '' Kilian asked the woman who was waiting for him.

She bent a little and extended her hands. He opened the suit that he was wearing. A head gear that looked like some kind of a helmet, a bodysuit that looked just like a puffed jacket and some heavy metallic shoes.

She took all of those and compressed them as if they were made of paper. They folded right between her palms. She took a small case and thrust the compressed product inside.

Right at that moment, Kilian coughed and the woman turned towards him with panic.

She offered the sleeve of her dress to wipe the small amount of blood that came out his nose.

He smiled.

" I know what you are doing is important but nothing is more important than your health, Lord Kilian. You should keep that in mind. "

She looked genuinely worried and couldn't take her eyes off Kilian.

" You worry too much Sitara. "

Kilian dismissed her concern with a little shove and hopped onto his Air Mobile. A very sleek and elegant version of a bike but it had no tires. Its base looked more like a dog sled.

" Hop on. How long do you want me to keep waiting? "

Kilian turned his head to ask.

" Thanks Lord Kilian. But I prefer my wings. "

Within the blink of an eye she was airborne, behind her was spread a mighty, majestic feathered wing.

Kilian smirked as he looked up at her. He revved his vehicle and floated up at her level.

" Alright, let's race. "

The beautiful woman's face lit up. She looked ethereal when she smiled back and winked.

" I bet we will have to keep it a secret if you lose. "

With that, the two of them disappeared on the horizon.

Watchers' Headquarters

" These monitors haven't flickered for centuries. Are you sure there is no technical hitch, Gruffel? "

The serious looking bald man with round glasses didn't reply or look up. He was busy at work, trying hard to decipher what looked like a graph.

" Gruffel? Tell me, " The sleek young man in a black leather coat and with heavy silver chains around his neck, repeated his question.

" I don't know. If I don't know, how can I tell you if it's a technical hitch or not? Let me properly decipher the signals first , Robert. Why are you so paranoid? "

Robert looked offended.

" Paranoid? Who am I? " He scoffed, " And why would that be? "

Robert shrugged.

" I don't know. Maybe because of the warning last time. I am sure it was like an ultimatum. "

And then he turned his back towards Robert and continued with whatever he was doing.

Robert's ears and cheeks turned red. His entire face was turning crimson. He was bloating from the inside to contain his anger. But instead of blowing up, he decided to stomp his way out of there.

When he was finally out of the building, which he called both his home and his workplace, he breathed.

It was a frustrated, angry breath.

" They think I am bluffing. They can't see what I can. They don't know what I do. But one day they will realize." He took two more steps forward and stopped in front of a zebra crossing because there was a red light at the pedestrian signal.

A little girl in a pink dress came jumping with a teddy in her hand. It was a squeaking teddy, the ones that squeaked when they were pressed at the belly. She turned to face Robert, their eyes met and she smiled.

There were cars zooming in and out.

As if everything started moving fast forward, Robert saw the signal turn green, the girl crossing the road but then suddenly she dropped her toy. She had already crossed the road but she turned back to pick the teddy up, and just then the signal turned red again. The next second, a truck came at her at full speed and smashed her skull.

Robert had his eyes closed. The moment he opened his eyes, he saw he was still at the zebra crossing, waiting for the signal to turn green and the little girl was still standing beside him, smiling.

He snatched the teddy from her, turned around and threw it in the roadside dustbin.

Just then the signal turned green and he began crossing.

He could hear the child screaming and crying while other passersby hurled insults at him.

" What a freak! "

" Who could do that to a little girl! "

" This is why we should not let our children travel alone. The streets are full of lunatics. "

One by one , their words pierced his soul.

But he shook his head, held his breath for a moment and then kept moving forward.

" They can't see what I can do. They don't know what I do. "
