Daughter of the Damned

Chapter 26-Mountain of Forgetfulness

Ch. 26 / 115 Dec 18, 2024

Mira's POV

One weird stuff after another was going all around me.

That included my mother's phone being not reachable for almost twenty four hours but that didn't stop the daily flow of mundane life.

I had classes to attend and I wasn't allowed a single day of leave unless I was dying, that is.

It was an excursion day and everybody was gearing up before the bus left for the site.

I had my bag packed and cap and sunglasses on. We were going on a nearby mountain. That place was not widely known but had a very rich and ancient local history. We were going to find out about that.

We were traveling in small batches, so we would all comfortably fit the sixteen seaters.

You will be shocked if I tell you who was my seat mate.

It was Betty.

I sat there looking out of the window as she powder her face repeatedly with the brush.

She hated the sun so much that she kindly obliged to my request to have the window seat.

With the things going on around me, I could have easily thought that she was a vampire. But then she dropped her blush.

Vampires were supposed to be perfect. Why would they need so much makeup? I was almost beginning to think that we were heading to a ball instead of a trekking cum excursion.

The ride began with much joy. Everybody was singing and dancing and we waved as the other buses crossed our path.

We were yelling at the other buses in the beginning but then the teachers in each bus asked us to stop being hooligans.

The way up to the first toll booth was uneventful.

The road up ahead was steep and had a couple of tunnels because landslides were very common in that area.

We stopped at the first tunnel and then the drivers decided to race, much to our amusement.

The road was absolutely deserted because the area saw hardly any footfall. But it was very dark.

The buses left together, rushing inside that darkness as we shouted in amusement.

It was going on and on when suddenly we heard a thud over the roof of the bus.

I would have thought it was a big monkey if we were outside or in the woods. But we were literally inside a tunnel and the roof was intact.

And apparently it happened simultaneously on all the buses.

He tried to look out of the window to see what was happening and some tried to touch the sun roof.

Suddenly a high pitched frequency made all of us reel back.

It slowly cleared up and followed with the following announcement.

" We know who you are. And you know because you can hear us talk. We are not here to make a ruckus.Come back to us. Come here. "

" Stop! Stop! What is this noise... Why are they shrieking? My ears hurt. Make it stop. "

Betty was yelling on top of her voice.

" Shhh! Let me hear. They are saying something. "

I was just trying to concentrate.

" What are you trying to listen to? It's just irregular frequency and it will make my ears bleed if they don't stop. "

It was at this moment that I realized that none of the other students in my bus heard what I could hear. We had totally different receptions.

The bus was running at high speed but it stopped all of a sudden and we all held onto whatever we could to maintain our balance.

And then the stomping on the roof of the buses intensified.

We looked all around in anticipation, afraid and scared . Our hearts could feel that we were in the presence of something evil, something inhumane as those sinister footsteps moved towards the driver's cabin.

It was for the first time that I saw those eyes.

Burning bright as if freshly picked from Hell itself, they stared as if, into each of our souls. Our hands and feet froze and I could hear my fellow classmates call out to God for help, under their breaths.

The figures were hooded and their faces hid behind a terrifying mask. They did not come inside but scrutinized each one of us from the outside. I was wondering what was happening in the other buses when suddenly there was a siren, similar to that of cops. But it was coming from up above, beyond the roof of the tunnel and then suddenly two flying motorbikes appeared from under the tunnel roof. They slid through it as if it was a water wall.

With the advent of this new nemesis, the hooded figures scurried away and were gone.

We all huddled together in fright, wondering what this new thing was that came by in a flying motorcycle.

But they walked inside our bus and bowed at the driver and the teacher. Then smiled at us and said,

" Don't worry. We are the Watchers. You are safe now. Carry on with your journey. "

They were about to leave when someone overcame me and I stood up.

" Please, wait. What were those things? And who are you guys? "

The woman with short hair smiled.

" It's none of your business not am I obliged to reply but since we will be deleting all your memories of this incident, I might as well quench your curiosity.

Those were a few troublesome aliens. They keep disturbing our peace from time to time.

We are the so called superheros, saving the Earth but we were all once called anomalies. We are human beings with superhuman abilities and are an organized association that fights alien crimes. "

With that she was gone.

As soon as she shut the door of the bus with a loud bang , everybody blinked twice. And then everyone looked at each other, wondering what had just happened.

" Why the hell did we stop here? Why aren't the buses running? " asked one.

" I don't know, let me ask the other teachers, " the teacher in our bus called the others and none of them knew why and when they had stopped, so they decided to just keep moving.

" It's just like those folklore children. Many were known to have forgotten their homes. Thus, these mountains got the name, The Mountain of forgetfulness. It's getting interesting. "

The teacher rubbed her hands as everybody else cheered her on and the bus kept moving on.

Only I seemed to have retained every detail.

I did not forget anything. I remembered it all, every bit of it.
