Daddy's Best Friend

Chapter 45

Ch. 45 / 73 Apr 09, 2026

SOPHIA’S POV

I sauntered into the dining room, still rubbing the sleep from my eyes, when I was greeted by the smell of freshly brewed coffee and the sight of Henry flipping through a stack of papers. The morning sun streamed in, casting a warm glow over everything.

"What's got you so busy this early?" I asked, eyeing the papers scattered on the table.

Henry looked up, a smile playing on his lips. "Morning, sleepyhead. I've been going through some work stuff."

I raised an eyebrow, feigning innocence. "Work stuff, huh? Trying to impress someone with your diligence?"

He chuckled. "Maybe. Or maybe someone convinced me that having a focused morning routine is the key to success."

I grinned, taking a seat across from him. "Well, someone sounds wise beyond his years."

Henry leaned back, his eyes sparkling. "You know it. Speaking of work, there's something I wanted to talk to you about."

I leaned in, intrigued. "Oh? Do tell."

He set the papers aside and locked eyes with me. "I've been thinking, and I've decided to let you intern at my company."

My eyes widened in surprise. "Seriously? You're not pulling my leg?"

He nodded, a hint of seriousness in his gaze. "Seriously. But, and there's always a 'but,' we need to establish some ground rules."

I crossed my arms, feigning offense. "Ground rules? I thought this was a no-rules kind of relationship."

He smirked. "In love, yes. In the workplace, we need a bit more structure."

I sighed dramatically. "Fine, lay 'em on me. What are these ground rules?"

Henry leaned in, his tone serious. "First, when we're at work, we're coworkers. No distracting each other with googly eyes and secret smiles."

I tilted my head, pretending to ponder the rule. "Googly eyes and secret smiles? That sounds like a fun workplace."

He chuckled. "Fun, yes, but not very productive. Rule number two, no discussing personal matters during work hours."

I raised an eyebrow. "Not even if I have an urgent need to discuss the latest episode of our favorite show?"

He smirked. "Especially not then. We need to maintain a professional environment."

I sighed dramatically again. "So, no workplace gossip about our favorite TV characters. Got it."

He nodded. "Exactly. And rule number three, when we leave the office, we leave work behind. No carrying it into our personal time."

I grinned. "So, no late-night strategy sessions over dinner?"

Henry smirked. "Nope. We save that for the boardroom."

I pretended to pout. "You're taking all the fun out of it."

He leaned in, a playful glint in his eyes. "We'll find other ways to have fun, I promise."

I raised an eyebrow, a mischievous smile forming. "Oh, really? I can't wait to see what you have in mind."

Henry leaned back, a satisfied smile on his face. "Well, those are the rules. Take it or leave it."

I pretended to consider it, then leaned in, whispering, "I suppose I can abide by those rules, Mr. Professional."

He grinned. "Good. Now that that's settled, there's one more thing I wanted to do."

I furrowed my brows in curiosity. "What's that?"

He reached across the table, cupping my face with his hands, and planted a soft, lingering kiss on my lips.

I pulled away, a teasing glint in my eyes. "Is that a new rule too? Workplace kisses allowed?"

Henry chuckled. "Consider it a bonus perk of the job."

I grinned. "I think I can get used to these new workplace policies. It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it."

He winked. "That someone is you, intern extraordinaire."

And just like that, the morning routine had transformed into a playful exchange of rules and kisses, setting the tone for a new chapter in both our personal and professional lives.

As Henry and I pulled up to the sleek building of his company, I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and nerves. This was it – the start of my internship. I smoothed down my blouse and took a deep breath, stealing a quick glance at Henry, who was looking as dapper as ever in his suit.

He grinned at me. "Ready for your grand entrance?"

I chuckled nervously. "As ready as I'll ever be."

We stepped out of the car, and I followed Henry through the glass doors into the bustling lobby. The receptionist shot us a friendly smile as we walked past.

Henry gestured to the elevator. "We're on the fifth floor. Get ready to meet the team."

As the elevator doors opened, I took in the sight of a buzzing open office space. People were typing away on their computers, engaged in hushed conversations, and a couple of them looked up at our arrival.

Henry led me to a group of desks where a few colleagues were gathered. "Hey, everyone, gather around. I want you to meet someone special."

I felt a blush creeping up my cheeks as curious eyes turned towards us.

Henry put his arm around me, a proud smile on his face. "This is Sophia, our newest intern. Sophia, meet the team."

A few smiles and welcoming nods greeted me, but there were a couple of raised eyebrows and skeptical glances. I could practically hear the unspoken questions – "Who is she? Why is she here?"

One of the more friendly faces, a woman with a bright smile, extended her hand. "Hi, Sophia! I'm Lisa. Welcome to the team."

I shook her hand with a grateful smile. "Thanks, Lisa. I'm excited to be here."

Lisa turned to Henry with a sly grin. "Henry, you didn't tell us you were bringing such a charming intern. You're trying to make us all look bad."

Henry laughed. "Just trying to keep things interesting around here."

Another colleague, a guy with a stern expression, eyed me up and down. "Intern, huh? We don't usually get interns."

I maintained a polite smile. "Well, I'm here to change that, I guess."

Henry chimed in, "Sophia is going to bring some fresh ideas to the table. Let's make her feel welcome."

As the introductions continued, I could sense the varying reactions from the team. Some were genuinely welcoming, while others seemed less thrilled about my presence. One guy, in particular, seemed to be eyeing me with a mix of suspicion and disdain.

Henry noticed my discomfort and squeezed my shoulder. "Don't worry about Mark. He's always like that with new faces. Once he sees you in action, he'll come around."

I nodded, appreciating the reassurance.

As the day unfolded, I dove into my tasks, trying to make a positive first impression. Lisa proved to be a helpful guide, showing me the ropes and introducing me to the office dynamics. She shared office gossip and pointed out who the go-to people were for various tasks.

But Mark, the skeptical guy from the introduction, made it clear that he wasn't going to make things easy for me. When I asked a question about a project, he responded with a curt, "Figure it out yourself. We don't hold hands here."

I took a deep breath, determined not to let one grumpy colleague ruin my enthusiasm.

As the day went on, I found my rhythm, navigating through the challenges and soaking in the camaraderie of the more welcoming team members. It was a rollercoaster of emotions – moments of triumph followed by encounters with less-than-friendly colleagues.

In the midst of it all, Henry appeared by my desk, a proud smile on his face. "How's the first day going?"

I grinned, trying to shake off the challenges. "It's like a mix of a welcome party and a puzzle. But I'm surviving."

He chuckled. "Surviving is good. Just remember, it's always a bit bumpy at the start, but you'll find your groove."

I nodded, grateful for his support.

I headed to the bathroom, hoping for a moment of peace amid the whirlwind of my first day at Henry's company. Little did I know, peace wasn't on the agenda.

As I walked in, I sensed someone following me. I turned to find Kristen, Henry's secretary, right on my heels. Her expression was a blend of annoyance and disdain.

"Oh, look who's here," she sneered. "The new intern."

I forced a smile. "Hi, Kristen. Nice to meet you."

She rolled her eyes. "Save the pleasantries. I've heard all about entitled brats like you."

I raised an eyebrow, a bit taken aback. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me," she retorted. "You're only here because Daddy pulled some strings. Must be nice to live in Daddy's shadow, huh?"

I clenched my fists, trying to keep my cool. "Listen, Kristen, I earned my place here. I went through the same interview process as everyone else."

She scoffed. "Sure you did. Daddy probably called in some favors, and voila, you're an intern."

I took a deep breath, refusing to let her bait me. "Whether you believe it or not, I'm here to work and learn. If you have a problem with that, take it up with HR."

She smirked. "HR won't do anything. Daddy's influence runs deep."

I shook my head, feeling a mix of frustration and disbelief. "You know, Kristen, you don't even know me. Why the hostility?"

She leaned in, a mocking grin on her face. "I can spot entitled princesses from a mile away. You think you're special because Daddy got you a job. Well, newsflash, sweetheart, you're not."

I squared my shoulders, meeting her gaze. "I didn't come here for your approval. I came here to work. And if you can't handle that, tough luck."

She laughed, a sharp, biting sound. "Work, huh? Let's see how long Daddy's princess lasts in the real world."

I wasn't about to let her belittle me. "I'll last as long as it takes to prove people like you wrong."

Our verbal spar continued, echoing through the bathroom like a battleground of words. I defended my position, emphasizing my determination and qualifications, while Kristen threw snide remarks and unfounded accusations my way.

Amidst the exchange, a few other women entered the bathroom, shooting curious glances at us. Kristen, unfazed, continued her tirade.

Finally, I reached my limit. "Kristen, I don't know what your problem is, but I won't let you undermine my efforts. I'm here to learn, to contribute, and no amount of snarky comments will change that."

She huffed, realizing I wasn't backing down. "We'll see about that."

As Kristen stormed out of the bathroom, I took a moment to collect myself. It wasn't the welcoming environment I had hoped for, but I wasn't about to let one person's negativity define my experience.

Back at my desk, I reflected on the encounter. Henry noticed my distressed expression and approached with concern.

"Everything okay?" he asked.

I sighed. "Just a little run-in with Kristen. Seems she's not a fan of mine."

Henry frowned. "Don't let her get to you. Kristen's... well, she's Kristen. Trust me, everyone knows she's a handful."

I smiled, appreciating the support. "Thanks, Henry. I'll handle it."

As the day continued, I encountered more welcoming faces and helpful colleagues who countered Kristen's negativity. It was a stark reminder that not everyone would be as welcoming, but I was determined to prove myself.

And so, armed with resilience and a sense of humor, I faced the challenges of my internship, knowing that every workplace had its share of Kristens, but it was up to me to rise above the noise and succeed.
