Daddy's Best Friend

Chapter 40

Ch. 40 / 73 Apr 09, 2026

HENRY’S POV

As I drove Layla home, a heavy silence hung in the air between us. The truth was looming, waiting to be addressed, and I couldn't evade it forever. Layla, sitting beside me, finally mustered the courage to ask the question that had been haunting her.

"Henry," she began tentatively, "is Sophia the one you have feelings for?"

I hesitated, my grip tightening on the steering wheel. There was no use in pretending anymore. "Yes," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper.

Layla let out a sigh, her frustration evident. "Henry, why would you be dating a girl half your age and, to make it worse, your best friend's daughter?"

I sighed, struggling to find the right words to explain the complexity of my feelings. "Layla, it's not that simple. I didn't plan for any of this to happen."

She raised an eyebrow, clearly skeptical. "Come on, Henry. You can't just chalk this up to fate or coincidence. It's not like you to be with someone so much younger."

I knew she had a point, but I couldn't deny the undeniable pull Sophia had on my heart. "I tried to fight it, Layla. I really did. But the feelings I have for her... they're strong. I can't just ignore them."

Layla shook her head, her frustration bubbling over. "Bullshit, Henry. You've always been attracted to younger women. This isn't about love; it's about something else."

My jaw clenched at her accusation. "That's not fair, Layla. You don't understand what it's like."

She turned to me, her eyes burning with intensity. "Then make me understand, Henry. Explain to me why you're risking everything for this."

I sighed, my gaze fixed on the road ahead. "Sophia is not just any girl, Layla. She's smart, funny, and caring. She's mature beyond her years, and we connect on a level I can't explain."

Layla folded her arms, clearly not convinced. "Henry, you've always been a bit impulsive. Are you sure this isn't just another impulsive decision?"

I felt a surge of frustration. "This is different, Layla. I've never felt this way about anyone before. Sophia... she's the exception."

Layla's skepticism remained, and she leaned back in her seat, her arms still crossed. "Henry, you have a lot to lose. Your friendship with Collins, your reputation... Is this really worth it?"

I bit my lip, grappling with the gravity of her words. Layla was right; this wasn't just about my feelings. It was about the consequences, the potential fallout from pursuing something that defied societal norms.

But as I glanced at the road ahead, my thoughts inevitably drifted back to Sophia. The way she made me feel, the connection we shared... It was a force I couldn't reckon with, no matter how hard I tried.

"Layla," I finally said, my voice heavy with resignation, "I know the risks, and I'm willing to face them. Sophia means everything to me, and I can't just walk away from this."

Layla's expression softened, her eyes filled with a mix of concern and understanding. "Henry, I just don't want to see you get hurt."

I appreciated her concern, but I also knew that sometimes, in matters of the heart, the path forward was unclear.

Layla's question hung heavily in the air, lingering like a storm cloud on the horizon. "Henry, have you ever thought that maybe Sophia's feelings for you are just a fling? What will you do if she leaves you?"

I gripped the steering wheel tighter, my knuckles turning white. It was a question that had haunted me, one that I pushed to the back of my mind, hoping it would never come to the surface. But Layla had a way of getting to the heart of the matter, of forcing me to confront my deepest fears.

I sighed, trying to find the right words to express the turmoil that had been churning within me. "Layla, I can't predict the future. I can't control how Sophia feels. But what I do know is that I'm willing to take that risk because what we have is real."

Layla's skepticism was palpable, her doubt cutting through the air like a sharp blade. "Henry, you're risking so much for this. Your friendship with Collins, your reputation, your heart... Are you sure it's worth it?"

I met her gaze, my own eyes filled with determination. "Layla, I can't just walk away from something that feels this right. Sophia and I, we have a connection that I can't ignore. It's not just a fling; it's something deeper."

She shook her head, clearly unconvinced. "But what if she decides it's not enough? What if she leaves you for someone her own age?"

The thought was like a dagger to my heart, and I felt a knot forming in my chest. It was a fear that had kept me up at night, the uncertainty of whether our love could withstand the test of time and societal norms.

"I can't control what Sophia decides," I admitted, my voice trembling slightly. "But I can control how I feel and what I'm willing to fight for. And I'm willing to fight for her."

Layla leaned back in her seat, her expression a mix of concern and frustration. "Henry, you're taking a huge risk here. You're gambling with your heart, and I just don't want to see you get hurt."

I appreciated her concern, I really did, but I also knew that sometimes, in matters of the heart, you had to take risks. Love wasn't always neat and tidy; it was messy, unpredictable, and sometimes, it defied logic.

"Layla," I said, my voice filled with a quiet resolve, "I can't live my life in fear of what might happen. Sophia makes me happy, and I'm not going to let that go just because it's unconventional."

She sighed, clearly at a loss for words. "Henry, I just hope you know what you're doing."

As I continued to drive, the weight of our conversation hung heavily in the air. Layla's doubts had surfaced, and I couldn't ignore them. But in my heart, I knew that my feelings for Sophia were genuine, and I was willing to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

I couldn't predict the future, and I couldn't control how Sophia felt, but I could control my own actions and decisions. And right now, I was choosing to follow my heart, even if it meant walking a path less traveled.

I sat in my car, my fingers gripping the steering wheel as I stared at my phone. Sophia's voice still echoed in my ears, the hurt and anger in her tone cutting deep. She didn't want to see me, and I couldn't blame her. I had messed up, and I needed to make it right.

With a sigh, I dialed her number, praying she would pick up. After a few rings, her voice came through, tense and distant. "What do you want, Henry?"

I cleared my throat, my words feeling heavy and inadequate. "Sophia, can we please talk in person? I want to explain everything."

There was a pause on the other end, and I could almost feel her hesitation. "Fine. But don't expect me to forgive you."

I nodded, even though she couldn't see it. "I understand. Where are you?"

She gave me her location, and I was relieved that she was willing to see me. I knew I had a lot of explaining to do, and I was prepared to grovel if necessary.

As I pulled up to the spot, I saw Sophia standing by the sidewalk, her arms crossed defensively. I got out of the car and approached her cautiously. "Sophia."

She didn't respond, just gave me a curt nod. I could see the hurt in her eyes, and it was like a punch to the gut.

"I'm so sorry, Sophia," I began, my voice shaky. "I never meant for any of this to happen. I never wanted to hurt you."

She scoffed, bitterness lacing her tone. "And yet, here we are. You lied to me, Henry. You lied about Layla, and I had to find out from her. What else have you lied about?"

I swallowed hard, the guilt gnawing at me. "I didn't want to involve you in all the complications of my life. I thought I was protecting you."

Sophia's gaze softened slightly, but her anger was still palpable. "Protecting me? By lying to me? Henry, I'm not a child. I can handle the truth."

I nodded, acknowledging her point. "You're right. I should have been honest from the beginning. I messed up, Sophia. I messed up big time."

She sighed, her shoulders slumping a little. "You did, Henry. You really did."

I took a step closer, wanting to bridge the gap between us. "Sophia, I care about you more than I've cared about anyone in a long time. I know I've made mistakes, but please, can we work through this together?"

She looked at me, her eyes searching mine for sincerity. "I need time, Henry. Time to think about all of this."

I nodded, respecting her need for space. "Take all the time you need. Just know that I'll be here, waiting for you."

Sophia's gaze softened further, and she surprised me by reaching out and taking my hand. "I don't want to lose you, Henry. But we need to figure out how to make this work without all the lies and secrets."

I squeezed her hand gently, a glimmer of hope flickering within me. "I promise, Sophia, no more lies. From now on, complete honesty."

She nodded, a small smile playing at the corners of her lips. "Good. Because I really do care about you too, Henry."

Sophia and I stood there, our fingers still entwined, the air thick with unspoken words. The tension between us was palpable, a mix of desire and uncertainty. I wanted to bridge that gap, to make things right between us, so I leaned in slowly, my eyes locked on hers.

Our lips met, and it was electric. The kiss was a fusion of longing and passion, a silent plea for forgiveness and a promise of honesty. It started soft and tentative, as if we were testing the waters, but soon, it deepened into something more profound.

Sophia's lips were warm and soft, fitting perfectly against mine. Her hands rested gently on my chest, and I could feel the rapid beat of her heart echoing my own. It was a kiss filled with emotions too complex to put into words, a kiss that said everything we couldn't.

When we finally pulled away, our breaths were ragged, and our eyes met, holding a silent conversation of their own. It was a fragile moment, one where the weight of our feelings hung in the balance.

Sophia spoke first, her voice soft and vulnerable. "Henry, I need to tell you something."

I nodded, my heart pounding in my chest. "Of course, Sophia. What is it?"

She took a deep breath, her gaze unwavering. "I ran into your friend, Lynda, today. She knows about us, about our relationship. She warned me to stay away from you."

My heart sank at her words. I had known this conversation was coming, but I hadn't anticipated it would be this soon. "I see. What did she say exactly?"

Sophia hesitated for a moment, as if choosing her words carefully. "She told me that I'm young and that eventually, I'll move on. She thinks I'll break your heart."

I sighed, running a hand through my hair. "Sophia, Lynda means well, but she doesn't understand how I feel about you. I care about you deeply, and I want to be with you, regardless of what anyone else thinks."

Sophia looked at me, her eyes searching mine for sincerity. "Henry, I don't want to lose you because of what others think. But it's also important to me that we're on the same page about this. Are you sure you're willing to take that risk?"

I nodded, determined to make her understand. "I'm more than willing, Sophia. I believe in us, and I won't let anyone come between us. I want to be with you, no matter what."

She smiled, relief washing over her features. "Good, because I feel the same way, Henry."

We kissed again, sealing our commitment to each other. It was a kiss that spoke of trust and determination, a promise to face whatever challenges lay ahead as long as we faced them together.

As we held each other, I couldn't help but think that sometimes, love was about taking risks. It was about defying expectations and fighting for what mattered most. And in that moment, what mattered most was the person in my arms, the one who had captured my heart and who I was determined to protect and cherish.
