Daddy's Best Friend

Chapter 50

Ch. 50 / 73 Apr 09, 2026

SOPHIA

I woke up with a heavy heart, the remnants of last night's argument with Henry lingering in the air. The silence in the room echoed my sadness, and I knew I needed someone to talk to, someone who could lend a sympathetic ear. So, I grabbed my phone and dialed Kylie's number.

"Hello?" Kylie's cheerful voice greeted me from the other end.

"Hey, Kylie," I replied, my own voice a bit shaky.

"Soph! What's up? You sound like you've been through a tornado. Everything okay?" Kylie's concern was palpable, even through the phone.

I sighed, contemplating where to start. "It's Henry. We had a massive fight last night, and I don't know what to do."

Silence followed, and then Kylie's voice came through, a mix of empathy and curiosity. "Oh no, spill the tea, girl. What happened?"

So, I began recounting the heated exchange, the accusations, the hurtful words, and the lingering doubt that threatened to unravel what we had. Kylie listened attentively, interjecting with gasps or words of encouragement.

"No way! He said that?" Kylie exclaimed after one particularly cutting remark from Henry.

"Yeah, it was brutal. I just don't get why he's so hung up on the age thing," I muttered, frustration seeping into my voice.

"Men can be idiots sometimes," Kylie chimed in, her solidarity comforting.

"That's true," I agreed, a hint of a smile breaking through. "But seriously, it's like he doesn't see beyond the number."

"He's probably just scared, Soph. You know, commitment issues or something," Kylie offered her analysis.

"But we've been through so much together. Why would he doubt us now?" I wondered aloud.

"He's a guy, Soph. They get weird about stuff. It's like they have a commitment phobia or something," Kylie reiterated.

"I just wish he'd see that I'm not interested in younger guys or whatever. I chose him for who he is," I sighed, feeling the weight of the situation.

"Have you talked to him since the argument?" Kylie asked, her voice gentle.

"No, not yet. It's like this massive wall of awkwardness is between us," I admitted.

"You've got to break that wall, Soph. Communication is key, you know? Maybe he just needs time to cool off," Kylie suggested.

"But what if it's more than that? What if he's really considering a break or something?" The fear crept into my words.

"Soph, you can't jump to conclusions. You need to talk to him, see where he's at. And if he's being an idiot, kick his butt and remind him what he's about to lose," Kylie encouraged, injecting a bit of humor into her advice.

I chuckled despite the heaviness in my heart. "You're right, Kylie. I'll talk to him. Hopefully, we can sort this out."

"Absolutely! And remember, I'm here for you no matter what. Now, go fix things with your man!" Kylie's pep talk lifted my spirits, and I felt a renewed determination to face whatever awaited me on the other side of the conversation with Henry.

"Thanks, Kylie. You're the best. I'll keep you posted," I said.

I continued pouring my heart out to Kylie about the tumultuous relationship rollercoaster with Henry, a sudden realization hit me like a ton of bricks.

"You know, Ky, I've been yakking about my dramas, but what about you and Jamie? How's that going?" I asked, guilt tinging my voice.

Kylie hesitated for a moment before responding, "Uh, it's... it's okay, I guess."

I furrowed my brows, detecting an undercurrent of uncertainty in her tone. "Just okay? Spill it, Ky. You never settle for just okay."

She let out a sigh, as if the weight of her unspoken thoughts was physically pressing down on her. "Well, you see, it's this whole bundle of insecurities. I'm not entirely sure where I stand with Jamie, and it's driving me nuts."

I leaned in, intrigued. "Insecurities? Kylie, you're like the embodiment of confidence. What's rattling your cage?"

She chuckled nervously. "I wish it were that simple. It's just... Jamie has this knack for being charming, you know? And sometimes, I can't help but wonder if I measure up to the other dazzling women he might encounter."

I raised an eyebrow. "Kylie, you're dazzling yourself. What's he doing to make you doubt?"

"It's not what he's doing; it's more about what I imagine he could be doing. It's like this paranoia that creeps in, especially when he's out with his friends or working late. I start concocting these scenarios in my head, and it's exhausting."

I let out a sympathetic sigh. "Ah, the old comparison game. I get it. But you've got to remember, Kylie, you're amazing just the way you are. Jamie is lucky to have you."

She played with the edge of her phone. "I know, I know. It's just hard to silence that nagging voice sometimes."

I nudged her playfully. "Well, tell that voice to shut up because you're Kylie, the unstoppable force of nature. Seriously, though, have you talked to Jamie about this?"

She shrugged, a trace of vulnerability in her eyes. "Not really. I don't want to burden him with my crazy thoughts. He's got enough on his plate."

I sighed, recognizing the familiar pattern of bottling up emotions. "Ky, you can't keep this to yourself. Communication is the key, remember? If something's bothering you, Jamie should know. You two are a team."

She nodded thoughtfully. "You're right, Soph. I need to gather the courage to have that conversation. But what if he thinks I'm being irrational?"

I grinned. "Tell him you're a proud member of the Irrational Club, and he signed up when he chose to be with you. Seriously, though, Jamie cares about you. He'd want to know what's on your mind."

She chuckled. "Thanks, Soph. You always know how to put things in perspective."

"That's what friends are for," I replied with a wink. "Now, go conquer those insecurities. Jamie won't know what hit him."

I stomped into the school premises, my mood as gloomy as the overcast sky. The lingering echoes of my argument with Henry resonated in my mind like a broken record. Breakfast felt emptier without his presence, and the weight of unresolved issues clung to me like a stubborn shadow.

As I made my way through the crowded halls, I spotted Jason. Great, just what I needed—more drama. I quickened my pace, hoping to slip by unnoticed, but he intercepted me with a smug grin.

"Sophia, my dear, you look like you've seen a ghost. Or perhaps, just a photograph?" His words oozed with a sinister satisfaction.

I shot him a glare, uninterested in playing his mind games. "Save it, Jason. I'm not in the mood for your theatrics."

He chuckled, the sound sending shivers down my spine. "Oh, but darling, you should be. After all, you did reject me, and actions have consequences."

I crossed my arms, unimpressed. "Consequences? What are you even talking about?"

He leaned in, his voice a malicious whisper. "That photo of you and Lucas. The one I so generously shared with your dear Henry."

My eyes widened in disbelief. "You did what?"

He reveled in my shock, reveling in the chaos he'd caused. "Oh, don't look so surprised. Did you really think turning me down would come without a price?"

Anger surged within me, an indignant fire burning away the remnants of hurt. "You're insane, Jason. Sending that photo was a pathetic move."

He laughed, a cold sound that echoed in the corridor. "Pathetic? No, my sweet Sophia, it was strategic. A taste of what's to come if you continue to defy me."

Defy him? The audacity of his words fueled my fury. "I won't be manipulated by your sick games, Jason. Henry will see through your schemes."

He stepped closer, his face inches from mine. "Oh, but that's the beauty of it. The doubt has been planted. Seeds of distrust blossoming in your precious relationship."

I scoffed, refusing to let him see how deeply his words stung. "You're delusional if you think this will change anything. Henry and I have something real, something you can't touch."

He grinned, the very picture of malevolence. "We'll see about that, Sophia. This is just the beginning. Enjoy the show."

As he walked away, leaving me seething in his wake, I couldn't shake the feeling that I had just stepped into a twisted game—one where Jason reveled in chaos, and I was an unwilling player.
