Daddy's Best Friend

Chapter 64

Ch. 64 / 73 Apr 09, 2026

SOPHIA’S POV

I tiptoed into the living room, careful not to wake Henry, who was blissfully asleep. The soft glow of the lamp painted a cozy ambiance, and I settled onto the couch, cradling my phone in my hand. A few taps and Kylie's familiar voice greeted me on the other end.

"Hey, Sophia! How's everything going? Spill the tea!"

A giggle bubbled up within me, and I launched into a lively account of our time in France. "Girl, you won't believe the drama we had at the museum. So, Henry and I are just casually enjoying the art, right?"

Kylie chuckled, "Go on, I'm all ears."

"Then, out of nowhere, these two guys decide they need my number. I tell them I'm with Henry, and they start with this whole 'daddy issues' nonsense. Henry, being the knight in shining armor, told them off, but they just wouldn't quit."

Kylie burst into laughter, "Seriously? And then?"

"Henry punched one of them! Can you believe it? I mean, I told him not to, but he couldn't stand their trash talk."

"Oh my God, Sophia, your life is like a movie. So, did they at least leave you alone after that?"

"Yeah, they got kicked out of the museum, and we had a good laugh about it. But seriously, who knew defending a lady's honor would involve throwing punches?"

Kylie quipped, "Well, you've got a real-life action hero, Sophia. That's something."

Our conversation took a turn to the guys who had hit on me, and Kylie couldn't contain her curiosity. "Tell me more about these guys. Was Henry like, super jealous?"

"He was more annoyed than jealous. I mean, I shut them down immediately, but they just wouldn't take the hint. Henry had to step in, and you know the rest."

"He's quite the protective boyfriend, huh? But I have to ask, did you enjoy the attention?"

I laughed, "Oh, come on, Kylie. You know I'm all about Henry. Those guys were just a minor annoyance in our grand French adventure."

We traded stories and banter, reminiscing about the highlights of our trip. From the Eiffel Tower to the museum escapade, every tale was embellished with laughter and shared camaraderie.

As the clock ticked on, I glanced at the bedroom door, making sure not to disturb Henry's peaceful slumber. The glow of the lamp painted a warm hue on the living room walls, creating a haven for our late-night confidence.

"So, Kylie, how's everything back home?" I inquired, wanting to hear about her escapades as well.

I sank into the plush cushions of the couch, the phone cradled between my ear and shoulder as Kylie's voice floated through the line.

"Sophia, I've been thinking about Thanksgiving. I've got a surprise for you."

My eyes lit up with curiosity. "A surprise? Kylie, you're killing me here. What is it?"

"Well, drumroll, please. I'm coming over for Thanksgiving! How does that sound?"

My heart skipped a beat. "No way! That's incredible! You, Thanksgiving, and all the craziness? Count me in!"

We giggled like schoolgirls planning the next sleepover, imagining the laughter and warmth that Thanksgiving would bring. Then, amid our excitement, Kylie's tone shifted, becoming more serious.

"Alright, now spill the beans. How's everything with Henry? Are you two still in the honeymoon phase?"

I chuckled, "More like the 'every day feels like a honeymoon' phase. Kylie, I can't tell you how much I'm in love with him. He's amazing."

"That's so sweet, Sophia. But, there's something I've been meaning to ask. When are you going to tell your dad about this whole love affair? You can't keep it under wraps forever."

My joyous mood took a slight dip. The father-daughter dynamic wasn't exactly a topic I was eager to delve into. "Kylie, you know it's not that simple. I mean, my dad is the quintessential overprotective parent. And telling him I'm dating his best friend? That's like throwing dynamite into a bonfire."

Kylie chuckled, "Dramatic metaphor, but I get it. Still, Sophia, you can't hide this forever. Eventually, you'll have to tell him."

I sighed, feeling the weight of the unspoken challenge. "I know, Kylie. I know. But timing is everything, and I haven't figured out the perfect moment. Besides, I'm not ready to navigate the storm that will follow."

She sighed on the other end, "Sophia, I get it, I do. But secrets have a way of surfacing, especially ones involving love. Trust me; it's better to come clean sooner than later."

The truth in her words resonated, but the courage to act upon them eluded me. "Kylie, you make it sound so easy. Maybe, when you're here for Thanksgiving, we can strategize on the best way to break the news to my dad."

She laughed, "Deal! We'll form a tactical plan over turkey and mashed potatoes. But seriously, Sophia, you've got to face this sooner or later."

As the call ended, I leaned back into the cushions, mulling over Kylie's advice.

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the cobblestone streets of the quaint French village. Henry and I strolled hand in hand, basking in the afterglow of a perfect day.

"Henry, I wish we could stay here forever," I mused, looking up at the twinkling stars emerging in the indigo sky.

A mischievous smile played on Henry's lips. "Well, Sophia, we could. We could disappear into the French countryside and live happily ever after."

I chuckled. "As tempting as that sounds, we have lives to return to. Responsibilities."

Henry's smile faded, replaced by a look of determination. "Speaking of responsibilities, Sophia, we need to talk. About us."

My heart fluttered, and not in the way that usually accompanied his charming suggestions. "What's there to talk about? We're happy, right?"

Henry sighed, running a hand through his salt-and-pepper hair. "Sophia, I'm tired of keeping our relationship a secret. I want to talk to your father when we get back."

I stopped dead in my tracks, my eyes widening. "What? Are you serious, Henry? You can't just drop that bombshell out of nowhere!"

He turned to face me, his eyes serious. "Sophia, I love you. I've been keeping this secret out of respect for you and your dad, but it's time. It's time he knows the truth."

I felt a knot forming in my stomach. "Henry, you don't understand. My dad is... well, he's not exactly the most open-minded person. He's protective, and if he finds out about us, he's going to lose it."

Henry raised an eyebrow. "Sophia, your dad and I go way back. We've been through thick and thin together. He deserves to know."

I crossed my arms, frustration bubbling. "Deserves to know? Henry, this is not a fairy tale. This is real life, and in real life, revealing our relationship could cause chaos."

He took a step closer, his eyes searching mine. "Sophia, we can't keep pretending forever. It's not fair to us, and it's certainly not fair to your dad. Let's face this together."

The air felt charged with tension as we stood there, locked in a silent battle of wills. My mind raced, weighing the love I felt for Henry against the storm that might follow if my dad discovered our secret.

Finally, I sighed. "Henry, I love you, but this isn't going to be easy. Let's not rush into this. We need a plan. A well-thought-out strategy to break the news to my dad without causing a meltdown."

Henry smiled, a glimmer of relief in his eyes. "Sophia, you're right. We'll plan it out carefully. But just know, the longer we wait, the harder it gets."

The night air was crisp as we stepped out of the car, the grandeur of Henry's mansion looming ahead. The echoes of our laughter from the vacation still resonated, but the atmosphere shifted when I felt Henry's hand on mine, pulling me into an unexpected kiss. Little did we know, we were not alone.

Collins, my dad, stood there like a storm brewing on the horizon, his eyes wide with disbelief. By his side was Kayla, his girlfriend, equally stunned.

"What the hell is going on here?" Collins thundered, his voice cutting through the night.

Henry, recovering from the punch that had caught him off guard, raised his hands defensively. "Collins, let me explain—"

But Collins wasn't having any of it. He swung another punch, connecting with Henry's jaw. I rushed forward, trying to intervene, with Kayla following suit.

"Dad, stop! Henry, explain yourself!" I pleaded, attempting to keep the peace.

Henry wiped blood from his lip, his eyes meeting mine. "Collins, we need to talk. Sophia and I are in a relationship, and it's not what you think."

Collins laughed bitterly. "Not what I think? Henry, you're twice her age!"

Kayla, her expression caught between shock and confusion, chimed in, "Sophia, is this true?"

I nodded, feeling the weight of the revelation settling in. "Yes, it's true. We love each other, and age doesn't change that."

Collins scoffed, "Love? Sophia, he's your father's friend! This is a betrayal."

Henry, his composure returning, stood tall. "Collins, I never intended for this to hurt you. Sophia and I fell in love, and we've been keeping it a secret to protect you from this exact reaction."

Collins, still seething, shot back, "Protect me? Henry, this is a mess. You're jeopardizing everything. How could you do this?"

Kayla, her gaze shifting between the men, finally spoke, "Collins, maybe we should hear them out. There might be more to this."

But Collins wasn't ready to listen. "No, Kayla. This is insane. Sophia, go inside. Henry, stay the hell away from my daughter."

I retreated toward the mansion, the heated argument between my dad and Henry echoed in the night. I felt torn, caught between the man I loved and the father who felt betrayed.

The grand entrance of the mansion felt like a stage where the drama of my life was unfolding. I watched as Henry and my father, Collins, continued their heated exchange, the echoes of their arguments piercing the air.

"Collins, you can't just take her away! She's an adult capable of making her own decisions," Henry insisted, his voice strained but determined.

Collins, his face a canvas of frustration, shot back, "You've manipulated her, Henry. This... this is unacceptable. I won't let you ruin her life."

I stepped forward, catching the tail end of their confrontation. "Dad, please, let's talk about this calmly," I pleaded, my attempts at mediation falling on deaf ears.

Henry, looking at me with a mix of concern and defiance, continued, "Sophia is not a child. She has a right to make choices for herself. We love each other, and that's not something you can control."

Collins, clenching his fists, retorted, "Love? This is not love. This is a mess, and I won't let it destroy her future."

As they argued, the air became thick with tension. I couldn't fathom the idea of being torn between the man I loved and the father I respected. Collins, fueled by anger and disappointment, declared, "Sophia, pack your bags. We're leaving."

His words hung in the air, a heavy decree that threatened to shatter the newfound happiness I had discovered with Henry. The mansion, once a symbol of luxury and comfort, now felt like a battleground for conflicting emotions.

"Collins, you can't force her to leave. Let her decide," Henry urged, his eyes pleading with my father.

But Collins, unmoved, replied, "Decide? She's not thinking clearly. I won't let her ruin her life with this... this man."

I took a deep breath, trying to find the words that could bridge the gap between the two most important men in my life. "Dad, I love him. Henry makes me happy, and I'm not a child anymore. Please, try to understand."

Collins, frustration etched on his face, shook his head. "No, Sophia. I won't let you make a mistake that will haunt you for the rest of your life."

The grandeur of the mansion seemed to crumble around me as my father's words hung heavily in the air. I stood there, torn between the man I loved and the father who had just given me an ultimatum. Henry's attempts to reason with Collins were met with an unyielding resolve that sent a shiver down my spine.

"Dad, please, don't do this. I love Henry, and I can't just leave him," I pleaded, my voice quivering with a mix of desperation and sadness.

Collins, unmoved by my pleas, looked at Henry and spat, "You've poisoned her mind. I won't let her ruin her life with you."

Henry, frustration etched on his face, retorted, " Collins, we love each other. Sophia is not a child anymore. You can't force her to leave."

My father's eyes bore into mine as he declared, "Sophia, if you choose to stay with him, you're no longer my daughter."

The weight of those words crashed down on me, and I felt a lump forming in my throat. I turned to Henry, tears streaming down my face, and whispered, "I can't lose my family, Henry. I can't."

But Henry, his face a mirror of determination, said, "Sophia, if we're going to face this, let's face it together. We can't let him control our lives."

Collins, growing more agitated, snapped, "Enough of this nonsense. Sophia, pack your bags. We're leaving."

Kayla, attempting to intervene, said, "Collins, maybe we should give them a chance to talk. Let's not make hasty decisions."

My father, his patience exhausted, barked, "Kayla, stay out of this. This is my family matter."

Henry, sensing the gravity of the situation, turned to me and said, "Sophia, let's talk to him. Maybe we can find a way to make him understand."

But Collins, his face stern, warned, "No more talking. Sophia, decide now."

Tears blurred my vision as I looked at Henry, silently begging for a solution. Henry nodded, as if making an unspoken decision, and said, "Sophia, go with your father. We'll find a way to fix this. I promise."

My heart ached as I nodded reluctantly. I couldn't bear the thought of losing my family, but I couldn't abandon the man I loved either. I went to pack my bags, the weight of each item a painful reminder of the life I was leaving behind.

Collins, seemingly satisfied with my compliance, turned to leave, his face a mix of disappointment and anger. Henry, his eyes following me, whispered, "I love you, Sophia. We'll find a way back to each other."

As I walked away from the man I loved, leaving behind the remnants of a love that felt invincible, I couldn't shake the feeling that this chapter of my life was far from over.
