SOPHIA’S POV
I hustled through my morning routine, the promise of a hot cup of Starbucks coffee became my beacon of hope. The college grind had a way of leaving me perpetually sleep-deprived, and caffeine was my trusted ally in the battle against exhaustion.
I slipped into my favorite jeans, hastily tugged on a sweater, and grabbed my bag. It was one of those mornings where every minute counted. My father's lessons about punctuality echoed in my mind as I dashed out the door.
The Starbucks was just a short walk from my apartment, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee beckoned me from a block away. I joined the line, mentally rehearsing my order – a venti caramel macchiato with an extra shot of espresso. My secret weapon for surviving morning lectures.
Finally, it was my turn at the counter. I flashed a tired smile at the barista, a young guy with a friendly demeanor. "One venti caramel macchiato with an extra shot, please."
His eyes lit up with a charming grin. "Sure thing. Name?"
"Sophia," I replied, a little distracted as I reached for my wallet.
"Nice name," he said with a wink. "I'm Lucas, by the way. Also a student, but I work here for some extra cash."
I couldn't help but chuckle. "Thanks, Lucas. So, what are you studying?"
As he prepared my coffee, he replied, "Psychology. It's fascinating to delve into the human mind."
I raised an eyebrow. "Psychology, huh? You must have some insights into the art of persuasion."
He chuckled, his fingers deftly finishing up my coffee. "Well, maybe a few tricks up my sleeve."
Lucas handed me the coffee, and I took a cautious sip. Perfection, as always. "Thanks, Lucas. It's great."
He leaned a little closer, lowering his voice conspiratorially. "Sophia, I was wondering if I could get your number. You know, maybe we could grab a coffee together sometime."
I hesitated for a moment, caught off guard by his directness. "Actually, Lucas, I'm seeing someone."
His smile faltered for a split second, but he quickly recovered. "I see. Well, I don't mind. I mean, we could just hang out as friends, right? It doesn't have to be a date or anything."
I appreciated his persistence but wasn't entirely comfortable with the idea. "I'm not sure, Lucas. I'm really busy with school and work."
He leaned on the counter, his charm in full swing. "Come on, Sophia. It's just coffee. No strings attached."
I sighed, feeling torn. He seemed like a nice guy, and I could use a few more friends. "Okay, Lucas, but just coffee."
His face lit up, and he practically beamed. "Great! How about this weekend?"
I relented, giving in to his enthusiasm. "Sure, why not? This Saturday works for me."
Lucas scribbled down his number on a napkin and handed it to me. "Awesome. Shoot me a text, and we'll figure out the details."
I pocketed the napkin, realizing that I'd just agreed to something unexpected. I left Starbucks with my coffee in hand, I couldn't help but smile. Maybe this coffee date with Lucas wouldn't be so bad after all.

I couldn't stop myself from grinning like a Cheshire cat as I spilled the caffeinated beans to Jannette about my encounter with Lucas at Starbucks earlier that morning. The sun had barely stretched its arms when he walked in, all charm and a crooked smile that could melt the Arctic ice.
"Jannette, you won't believe what happened today!" I gushed, my excitement bubbling like a shaken soda can. "I'm there, sipping my caramel macchiato, minding my business, and then bam! Lucas walks in."
Jannette leaned in, her eyes wide with curiosity. "Lucas? As in the tall, dark, and handsome Lucas?"
I nodded enthusiastically, "Yes, that Lucas! So, he strolls over, all cool, and guess what he asks?"
Jannette's anticipation was palpable. "What? What did he ask?"
"He asks me out!" I exclaimed, reliving the moment. "Right there, in the middle of Starbucks, he asks if I want to go out with him."
Jannette's face lit up with a mischievous grin. "And what did you say?"
I couldn't help but chuckle. "I told him, 'I just want to be friends.' Can you believe it?"
Jannette raised an eyebrow. "You turned him down? Why?"
I shrugged, trying to sound nonchalant. "I don't know, Jannette. I mean, he's great and all, but I'm not really looking to date right now."
Jannette leaned back in her chair, clearly intrigued. "Interesting. So, what did he say after that?"
I smirked, "Well, he took it like a champ. He said, 'No problem, Sophia. Friends it is.' And we started chatting and laughing."
Jannette's eyes twinkled with amusement. "Friends, huh? You've got some willpower, Sophia."
I winked at her. "You know me, always playing it cool."
Jannette leaned in again, lowering her voice. "But seriously, maybe this is your chance. You've been single for ages. Give it a shot."
I hesitated for a moment, my mind racing. "Well, there's something I haven't told you yet, Jannette."
Her curiosity piqued even further. "Oh, spill it, girl!"
I leaned closer, whispering, "I'm actually seeing someone already."
Jannette's eyes widened, and she leaned back in disbelief. "What? Since when? Why didn't you tell me?"
I shrugged sheepishly, avoiding eye contact. "It's not official yet, you know? I didn't want to jinx it."
Just as Jannette was about to respond, a voice interrupted us. "Hey, ladies, what's the juicy gossip?"
We turned to see Jason, the notorious office prankster, grinning like a Cheshire cat as he sauntered over.
Jannette shot me a knowing look before turning her attention to Jason. "Sophia here has a secret admirer."
Jason raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. "Oh, do tell!"
I sighed, realizing there was no escaping this conversation now. "It's not that big of a deal, guys. I've just been hanging out with Henry a lot lately."
Jason's eyes sparkled with mischief. "Henry, huh? Is he the reason you turned down Lucas?"
I nodded, my cheeks turning slightly pink. "Yeah, I didn't want things to get complicated."
Jannette chimed in, "But Sophia won't admit they're dating."
I shot her a playful glare, but she was right.
Jason leaned back, feigning surprise. "Well, well, well, Sophia, you sly fox. You're finally stepping back into the dating game, huh?"
I smiled, feeling a mix of embarrassment and happiness. "Yeah, I guess I am."
My heart was still racing from Jason's unexpected appearance when he dropped the bombshell. He wanted to talk to me alone. Right then and there, in the midst of our Starbucks confessional.
"Hey, Jannette," Jason said, grinning mischievously, "mind if I steal Sophia away for a moment?"
Jannette exchanged a quick glance with me, clearly torn between curiosity and camaraderie. I leaned in and whispered, "I think he wants to talk about something important. Stay with us, okay?"
Jason raised an eyebrow, clearly puzzled by our whispered conversation. "What's going on, ladies? Secret society stuff?"
I cleared my throat, suddenly aware that this situation was getting more complicated by the second. "Actually, Jason, could you tell us whatever you want to say here?"
He looked at me, his expression unreadable. "Well, it's kinda personal, you know? I thought we could talk privately."
I hesitated for a moment but decided to stand my ground. "I trust Jannette with my secrets. If you have something to say, you can say it in front of her."
Jason seemed taken aback, but he finally relented with a nod. "Okay, sure. We can talk here."
As Jason began to speak, I couldn't help but feel a wave of curiosity and anxiety wash over me. What could be so important that he wanted to talk privately?
But before he could utter more than a few words, he glanced at his watch and said, "Listen, Sophia, I've got to run now, but can we meet up after school? There's something I really need to discuss with you."
I nodded, not entirely sure what I was agreeing to. "Sure, Jason. After school it is."
With that, Jason left, leaving me and Jannette to exchange puzzled glances.
Jannette was the first to break the silence. "Sophia, what on earth was that all about?"
I sighed, feeling a mix of anticipation and apprehension. "I have no idea, Jannette, but I guess I'll find out later."
I decided to take the opportunity to ask Jannette something that had been bothering me for a while. "By the way, Jannette, have you ever had any kind of relationship with Jason in the past?"
Jannette's eyes widened, and she looked caught off guard. "Relationship? No, of course not. We're just friends."
I could sense there was more to the story, and I pleaded with her, "Please, Jannette, don't lie to me. Tell me the truth."
Jannette hesitated for a moment before finally confessing, "Okay, Sophia, fine. There was something in the past, but it's ancient history. I was once in love with Jason."
My eyes widened in surprise. I had no idea about this part of Jannette's life. "You were in love with him? Seriously?"
She nodded, her gaze fixed on the table. "Yeah, I came to UCLA because of him. But he never reciprocated my feelings. He played with my emotions, and it was painful, Sophia. Then there was Molly..."
I leaned in, my curiosity getting the better of me. "Molly? The Molly?"
Jannette let out a bitter laugh. "Molly was another girl who was interested in Jason. She made my life hell in college, always trying to one-up me and make me look bad in front of him. It was like a never-ending competition."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. My friend Jannette had gone through a tumultuous past, all because of her feelings for Jason. It was like something out of a teenage drama.
As I processed this newfound information, I couldn't help but wonder what Jason wanted to discuss with me after school. It seemed like there was a lot more to his story than met the eye
