Daddy's Best Friend

Chapter 61

Ch. 61 / 73 Apr 09, 2026

SOPHIA

The moment I stepped into the house, a sense of foreboding gripped me. The air was thick with tension, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something ominous awaited me. And then I saw her – Catherine, perched on the living room couch like a vulture ready to strike.

"What do you think you're doing, Sophia?" she spat out, her eyes blazing with fury.

I couldn't let her intimidate me. "I'm living my life, Catherine. Just like you should be doing."

She scoffed, a condescending smile playing on her lips. "You respond to my email with such insolence, and you think you can just walk away?"

"Insolence? If standing up for myself is insolence, then call me insolent," I shot back, refusing to cower.

Catherine rose from the couch, her anger palpable. "You have no idea what you've gotten yourself into, young lady."

"Oh, I'm well aware," I retorted, my patience wearing thin. "You can't control my life, Catherine."

She took a step closer, her gaze piercing through me. "You're playing a dangerous game, Sophia."

"I'm not the one playing games here," I replied, my voice steady despite the internal storm. "What do you want, Catherine? Money? Revenge?"

Her laughter echoed through the room. "You're just a pawn in this, Sophia. A pawn in a game you don't understand."

"Then enlighten me," I challenged, my frustration reaching its peak. "What's your endgame here?"

Catherine leaned in, her tone sinister. "I want what's rightfully mine. And if Henry doesn't comply, the whole world will know about your little affair."

My fists clenched involuntarily, but I took a deep breath, reminding myself not to let her bait me. "You're willing to destroy lives for your own gain?"

She shrugged, a cold indifference in her eyes. "It's survival of the fittest, darling."

I felt the weight of her words, the gravity of the situation sinking in. But I wouldn't let her break me. "You're not going to manipulate us, Catherine. You can't dictate the course of our lives."

She chuckled, a mirthless sound. "You're naive, Sophia. This world eats up the naive."

My back hit the ground with an unexpected thud, the force of Catherine's push taking me by surprise. Before I could fully register what had happened, I felt a pair of strong hands grabbing Catherine's wrists, pulling her away from me. It was Henry.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Henry's voice was a low, menacing growl, his eyes aflame with anger.

Catherine, seemingly unfazed, straightened her posture and shot me a triumphant smirk. "Just having a little chat with your precious Sophia."

Henry's grip tightened on Catherine's wrists, his jaw clenched in a display of restrained fury. "This is not how you chat with someone, Catherine. You've crossed a line, and you'll pay for it."

She attempted to break free from Henry's grasp, but he held firm. "You can't intimidate me, Henry. I know what I'm entitled to, and I won't be ignored."

I scrambled to my feet, my indignation fueling my resolve. "Henry, let her go. This isn't worth it."

Henry shot me a look that conveyed both protectiveness and determination. "No, Sophia. She needs to learn that she can't bully us into submission."

Catherine, realizing she was in a precarious position, attempted to switch tactics. "Henry, I thought we could discuss this like civilized adults. No need for threats."

Henry's laughter was devoid of amusement. "Civilized adults don't push people to the ground. What's your endgame, Catherine?"

She sighed dramatically, as if Henry's response was an inconvenience. "I just want what's rightfully mine."

Henry scoffed, his disbelief evident. "Your sense of entitlement knows no bounds. You lost any claim you had when you walked out on our marriage."

Catherine's expression turned venomous. "You don't get to decide that, Henry. I have leverage, and I'm not afraid to use it."

Henry's gaze never wavered, and he spoke with unwavering conviction. "You can't manipulate us, Catherine. Threatening Sophia won't change that."

Catherine finally managed to free herself from Henry's grasp, taking a step back as if to assess the situation. "You might regret underestimating me, Henry."

He took a step forward, his stance unwavering. "I regret ever being involved with you. Now, stay away from Sophia, or I promise you, the consequences will be severe."

With that, Henry turned away from Catherine, his protective instincts guiding him to my side.

The police station was a stark contrast to the chaos that had unfolded between Catherine and us. The sterile walls and faint scent of disinfectant seemed oddly comforting as we waited for Charles, Henry's close friend and ally in the police force.

Henry and I entered Charles' office with a sense of urgency, carrying the weight of Catherine's threats like an unwelcome companion. Charles, a sturdy man with a no-nonsense demeanor, looked up from his desk as we entered.

"Hey, Charles," Henry greeted him, his tone serious. "We need your help with a situation."

Charles paced round the room with an easy smile, his uniform crisply pressed. "Henry, Sophia, what brings you here?"

Henry glanced at me before launching into the recount of Catherine's threats and the evidence we'd brought with us.

"We've been dealing with my ex-wife, Catherine. She's been blackmailing us, threatening to expose our relationship to her father and the public," Henry explained, frustration evident in his voice.

Charles raised an eyebrow, his interest piqued. "Blackmail, huh? Let me see what you've got."

I handed Charles my phone, displaying the threatening email Catherine had sent. His eyes scanned the message, and I could see the tension building in his expression.

"This is serious," Charles said, his tone hardening. "You did the right thing by coming here. No one should have to endure this kind of harassment."

He leaned back in his chair, contemplating the situation. "Okay, first things first. We'll need to file a report. I'll make sure it gets the attention it deserves."

I sighed in relief, grateful for Charles's reassurance. "Thank you. We just want this to end, to live our lives without constantly looking over our shoulders."

Charles nodded, understanding etched on his face. "I'll also issue a warning to Catherine, make it clear that any further attempts to harass or blackmail you will result in legal consequences."

Henry thanked Charles, a weight visibly lifted from his shoulders. "We appreciate your help, Charles. We just want to move on from this nightmare."

As we left the police station, the afternoon sunlight felt warmer, casting a hopeful glow over our situation. Henry squeezed my hand, a silent acknowledgment that we were in this together.

"I can't believe we had to involve the police," I mused, feeling a mix of emotions.

Henry gave me a reassuring smile. "Sometimes, it's the only way to protect ourselves. We did what we had to do."

Henry and I walked into the house, the tension between us palpable. The weight of unspoken words hung in the air like a storm waiting to break.

"Henry, we need to talk," I said, my voice steady, despite the nervous energy swirling within me.

He turned to me, his eyes searching mine. "Talk? Yes, we definitely need to talk. Why didn't you tell me about the email or the call to your dad, Sophia?"

I took a deep breath, mentally preparing myself for the storm that was about to ensue. "I didn't want to worry you. I thought I could handle it."

His frustration was evident as he ran a hand through his hair. "Handle it? Sophia, this isn't something you handle on your own. We're a team, remember?"

I nodded, regret settling in. "I know, and I should have told you. But I didn't want Catherine's drama to ruin our evening. I thought we could deal with it without dragging you into unnecessary stress."

He sighed, his gaze intense. "Sophia, we can't keep things from each other, especially when it involves threats and blackmail. I need to know what's going on to protect us both."

I looked down, guilt gnawing at me. "I just didn't want to burden you. You've been through so much already."

Henry gently lifted my chin, forcing me to meet his eyes. "Burden me? Sophia, your safety, our safety, is my priority. Keeping things from me doesn't protect me; it puts us both at risk."

I felt a lump forming in my throat, and I struggled to find the right words. "I'm sorry, Henry. I should have trusted you enough to share everything."

His expression softened, and he pulled me into a comforting hug. "It's not about trust, Sophia. It's about facing challenges together. I can't help you if I don't know what you're dealing with."

I nodded against his chest, the weight of my mistake settling heavily on my shoulders. "I get it now. I won't keep anything from you again."

He leaned back to look at me, his eyes filled with both concern and love. "Good. Because I can't bear the thought of something happening to you because I wasn't there to protect you."

We stood there, wrapped in each other's arms.

Henry's lips brushed against mine in a gentle kiss, a promise of comfort and unity after the storm that had engulfed us. As we pulled away, he looked into my eyes, a mischievous spark lighting up his gaze.

"You know what, Sophia? We've been through a lot lately. I think we deserve a weekend getaway," he said, his voice filled with enthusiasm.

I grinned, loving the idea. "A weekend getaway? That sounds like a fantastic plan. Any particular place in mind?"

He pretended to ponder, rubbing his chin theatrically. "Hmm, let's see. Beach, mountains, or a cozy cabin in the woods?"

I played along, tapping my chin in mock contemplation. "Tough choices! How about a beach with a mountain view and a cabin nearby? Can we have it all?"

Henry chuckled. "Ambitious, I like it. But unfortunately, we need to pick one. So, beach, mountains, or cabin?"

I tilted my head, considering the options. "You know what, let's go for the mountains. Fresh air, stunning views, and maybe some hiking. What do you think?"

He nodded in agreement. "Mountains it is! Now, the big question: which mountain range are we talking about? The Rockies, the Alps, or something more exotic?"

I grinned, enjoying the playful banter. "Let's go exotic. How about the Himalayas? We can conquer Everest while we're at it."

Henry raised an eyebrow, feigning surprise. "Everest, huh? Ambitious indeed. But I like the way you think. Our own little adventure at the top of the world."

We laughed, the idea of conquering Everest transforming into a whimsical fantasy. Henry pulled out his laptop, and we huddled together on the couch, scrolling through various options for our mountain retreat.

"Okay, maybe not Everest," he conceded, "but what about the Swiss Alps? Cozy chalets, snowy landscapes, and maybe a bit of skiing?"

I nodded, picturing the idyllic scene. "Perfect! Let's find a charming chalet with a fireplace and a breathtaking view. We can sip hot cocoa by the fire and watch the snowfall."

Henry grinned, typing away on his laptop. "Sounds like a plan. And if we get tired of the cold, we can always warm up with some fondue."

Henry turned to me with a smile that radiated comfort. "You know, even with all the chaos, I'm glad to be here with you."

I snuggled closer to him. "Me too. We can face anything together."

His lips found mine in a soft, reassuring kiss. It was a silent promise, a pledge that no matter what challenges awaited us, we would confront them united.

Breaking away, I playfully teased, "I was thinking of making dinner tonight. A distraction, you know?"

Henry raised an eyebrow, amusement twinkling in his eyes. "Dinner, you say? I'm intrigued. But wait," he feigned horror, "remember the last time you tried to cook?"

I chuckled, remembering the culinary disaster that had unfolded. "Okay, maybe not dinner, but I can handle something simple. How about I make us a sandwich?"

Henry laughed heartily, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Sophia, darling, I appreciate the gesture, but let's not move from the disaster of Catherine to the disaster of your cooking."

I playfully swatted his arm. "Hey now, my cooking isn't that bad."

He raised an eyebrow, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Remember the burnt pancakes incident?"

I groaned in mock defeat. "Fine, point taken. No cooking tonight."
